The way I see it these are the options:

cobble with cobble stairs (what we have now, kind of ugly)
wood with wooden stairs (flammable)
some other material with mismatched stairs (gravel with wood stairs before)
some material with no stairs (might get annoying to have to jump so much)
something crazy with lava and glass or something

Personally, cobble doesn't look too bad as long as you have something other than the default texturepacks. Most pack makers realize that cobble is ugly by default and make it look a lot better.
 
How about cobblestone with wood stairs? You could also use stone slabs(There is also wood half-steps too) but that requires a lot of smooth stone to do and you would have to lengthen the walkway to make up for the extra space required.

That's kinda the worst of all worlds if you ask me. Ugly cobble + flammable stairs + it doesn't match.

Maybe Dunc should decide?
Or maybe it really doesn't matter all that much :lol:
 
Or we could use smooth stone. If I'm on the server you can ask me to spawn a bunch since I know how much longer it is compared to cobblestone.

I hate gravel immense amounts as well. That still does not leave any reason to have it cluttering up our chests, might as well put it to good use.

By the way, I'm liable to need a ton of tracks and boosters, anyone got a few hundred you're not using?
 
^^ I vouch for the Double stone half block thingi pathways. They look awesome, sort of like tiles. I play on a friends server and that's what they use for tiles inside all their buildings, or wool for carpet, obviously. Out on the street (I'm sad to report) they use gravel, but it's lined with the double stone half block thingi's and it looks sweet! They also use cobble steps. Logging in now...

EDIT: It seems we have decided on stone blocks for road, and half steps for steps. Looks nice, the contrast between light and dark. But I still think it should be cobble 'cause notch said that moss would grow on cobble eventually, in later update of the game. After a certain amount of time being left, moss would grow on it :D But it is a majority, community thing. :)

PS I've got about 4-6 minutes of lag. Ridiculous. Please, Dunc, transfer the server to that other computer ASAP, or look heavily into the hosted server... I will chip in about 20 pounds, so you're backed in at least one respect ;)

I've been hearing about an attempt by these new "Script-Kiddies" called "LULZSec" taking down Minecraft's servers, along with a number of other game websites today. So I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason.

I've gotten Minecraft working on Ubuntu 11.04 now :D It actually runs way better than on Windows Vista :dopey:

EDIT: FINALLY! Water gates that don't require mods. This is going to make things awesome!
 
Dunc you should add this so we can easily edit signs to make new announcements in the new spawn house. I'm suggesting this since the spawn house would be protected(or can you edit some permissions to let us do that?) and thus we can't place signs. I know that the mod might not work but the creator plans on updating soon.

Out of all the blocks you could name, you named the one (Chests/Furnaces excluded) block you can't move with a piston :p

I'm excited for them, I really like the door example (It's pulled right from a post on Reddit this morning)
 
I've done some upgrades to the new spawn house. Expanded the dance floor and added a disco ball type thingy. Also added more tables and chairs next to the dance pad.

It would be the floor under the dance pad. That's where we planned on having the spawn and where we can have announcements.
 
I was thinking the lowest floor, where I put the rules signs. So people can get out without much hassle to do other things.
 
I noticed the "Spawn info" sign on the first floor after I posted that. I now agree that we should have the spawn on the first floor so the new users will know what the rules are on the server and will help with room in the building.
 
I'm pretty sure Dunc is working on moving the spawn right now. Who knows? It might be on the Ubuntu machine the next time we log in. :)
 
Well, I still can't connect to Minecraft.net via the launcher...

And anyway, even if I could, my 🤬 computer keeps dropping it's connection to my router... (it's a wired connection as well...)
 
Lol you make it sound like I'm organised or something! Can't get to a computer at the moment, is the server ok?

I'm giving up on the Ubuntu idea and going with xp instead. A clean install is almost as light and will give better networking and remote access. It will also mean I can do a direct transfer of the server. Hopefully I can start on it tonight.
 
Yeah the server seems to be down right now since the launcher is telling me that the server is refusing connection.
 
Crashed again. Not sure what's causing this, maybe it's being overloaded. Should be working now.
 
Hey guys, what button do I press to take a screenshot in minecraft? Also the new spawn point looks good. :)
