The most power I've seen demonstrated out of an A series was a turbocharged 225hp car. It was *insane* when the car came on boost... talk about torque steer!

"needs a oil cooler though otherwise trouble will insue." The ones I've seen in Mini mags have oil coolers, auxiliary radiators, intercoolers, etc, etc. Under the bonnet it looks like just a mass of piping and lines this way and that. Not a neat install, but they must go like hell. Then again, an A series producing that much power is going to need to be torn down probably once a year or so... just crazy power. That's why I'm goin with the B series Honda approach. Same (or more) power, and Honda gearbox + Honda reliability. ...well, of course with Mini cool wrapped around it. :) I was even thinking of painting the whole engine block + valve cover in MOWOG green and getting an "AUSTIN" engine tag riveted to the valve cover, along with the "WARNING: Vehicle is wired Negative Ground" plate. ;)

GT3 I think went to 180hp. All in all not bad. Just had to play around with the gearing to get any acceleration out of it.

Sphinx - The chrome nut on the "B" pillar is where the !@#$^) previous owner installed the upper seatbelt pivot point...even though there is one about 3 inches below that.

Attached is a shot of the 66S from late last year. Right now it's sittin under a car cover until I can devote some time to it so that it runs better. Don't want to have it frickin die on me like it did last time I was showing it to a potential customer!!! Doh!

Oh my, how can you bring yourself to sell that mk1? you must be mad ;)

When you said you had a 66S I thought it might be a mk2, nice one mate 👍

It is amazing what some people do but that chrome nut is funny as hell :dopey:

and to think that this engine was thought up 60 odd years ago to be a 20bhp 0.8
i would like a Vtec clubman but funding is not allowing, i have a club 1.1 in my garage in need of a shed load of welding. all time with these things.

The current issue of Evo has a group test with the Fiesta ST vs Clio 182 cup vs Cooper S vs C2 VTS vs Ibiza FR. The 206 is not included in the test, but the following is a direct quote.

"There is one notable omission from the test, the Peugeot 206 GTI. Notable because it's the car Ford (worryingly) believed was the ST's key rival during the Fiesta's development, and an omission because, while it inexplicably continues to be a best-seller in the sector, it was never more than average when new, and is laughably long in the tooth. Beating it proves nothing when the game has moved on so far."

The 206 GTI (or 180 GTI) do have very different handling characteristics to the Clio, but just as engaging? No, sorry, not even in the same calls. Over a typical B-road or a track the Clio would leave the GTI trailing, and the twistier it gets the further back the 206 would be.

On a personaly note, I had high hope at launch for both the Clio 172 (as the first car was) and 206 GTI, having previously owned both a 205 GTI and Clio Williams (Mk III).

The Clio 172 (and later 182) are both fantastic cars (I had a 172 for a short while); but the 206 GTI was a major let down, yes it has grunt, but the handling was average and very uncommunicative. It still sells on the back of the old 205, but Peugeot seem to have lost the plot a bit with regard to hot hatches, which is a major shame.

Thats just plain weird. The GTi180 is far from long in the tooth? Are you sure they aint talking about the bog standard GTi with 130 whatever BHP? In a review in a mag out here called MOTOR, the GTi180 ranked very well against the 182 Cup. And before you discredit this mag, they are on a par with Evo when it comes to performance testing. They took a Gallardo to the Alps to drive in the snow with special Michelin studded tyres  Tried to compare it to that latest Lamborghini
Tractor

Sphinx... what will kill 'ya is that I had a 1964 1071cc Austin Mini Cooper S. It's not a 970 "holy grail car", but they only made a few thousand of the 1071s... couldn't afford to restore that one - or the 66 S. I would really like to, but I was told by my significant other that I have to make a choice. Sophie's Choice. Lol... I figured I wanted a *fast* Mini to enjoy... and with that level of performance I knew I'd be creating sort of a grenade-like A series. So... Honka lump it is. ;)

I love messin around with the Mini on Laguna Seca in GT3. It's not the fastest car, but it's a fun track, and if you get the car set up correctly you can take a lot of the corners flat out. I should tweak my setup a bit and then post it up here to see what you guys think. Hell, I've got some time to kill before GT4, and I need to build up my "transfer" bank anyway.

I only used the Evo article to back up my own feelings having driven both cars; however it does seem that the majority of the UK magazine all seem to agree. Top Gear gave it a 9/20 rating (thats for the 180, the standard GTI got 7/20) and Autocar said the 'Petrol GTI disappoints, diesel not much better'.

As I said I have had the opportunity to drive these two cars back to back and the Clio 182 is (in my opinion and it seems most other peoples) in a different class to the 206 GTI. And this has nothing to do with straight line performance (however the Clio still edges it here) but from a handling point of view the Clio offers far more communivation through the wheel, has far more progressive brakes and has one of the finest and well balanced chassis I have ever driven in a front wheel drive car. Its much better balanced close to the limit and far more predictable when you do step over that limit, with easily controled lift-off oversteer.

I have no intention of discrediting the magazine you refer to (as I have never read it), but they seem to be at odds with just about every other opinion (and remember they are opinions).

It may be down to the testing being done in Australia, but here in Europe (and particularly in the UK) the Clio 182 is generally rated as one of the finest hot hatches ever made.

On a personal note, I would rate it above my old Williams and that something I never thought I would ever do and certainly something I would never say about the206 GTI 180.

Shocking stuff! nearly as shocking as the 206 driving position. Aaaah well, they seem quite popular out her in auz, see a lot on the roads and stuff. MOTOR have just released their latest issue, with PCOTY special. (Performance Car Of The Year). there were 21 cars from all around the world, and based upon straight line speed both to 100km/h, 400m and 1km sprints. Then a gruelling hammering round a track, which pushes these machines to the max. Then its on to a rather nasty hillclimb sprint.

Cool, Clio was the highest placed front wheel drive, any way you could scan that article and put it up here? Looks like an interesting read.

BTW, tend to see more Cliosport's on the roads in the UK than 206 GTI's, the standard 206 is still very popular however.

lol if i had a scanner, i would, its also about 30 pages long  If you can get hold of a copy, its a great read, and some lovely pics of all these exotics getting hammered! the Golf R32 and TT 3.2 were very unimpressive indeed. Around the track, they didnt do well at all, which really suprised me! it was 35 degrees on the day of testing though, and sure did put the cars through the most intensive day possible. straight line performance wasnt good for any of the machines because of the heat, but its all relative, as each car was tested against the next.
The CL65 AMG was absolutely unreal in a straight line, managed a 12.59 1/4 mile @ 190kmh, and did the standing km in 22.35 @248.1kmh !!

Mini Cooper S wasnt the slowest though! 0-100kmh was 7.84 secs, and 8.20 secs for the Audi TT v6. 1/4mile for mini was 15.85 @ 145.8kmh, and audi TT was 15.93 @147.6kmh, so you can see the TT coming into its own near the top end. mini had slowest standing km though, at 28.73@184kmh, just think, the mini reaches less speed over a 1km than the CL65 AMG does over 400m :scared:

I just found this thread, I don't know many of the names who posted here, so I'd like to inform you that in the OLR section of GT Planet, in the Teams Forum, we created a Mini Maniacs team dedicated to Mini racing in GT3 (and GT4 soon).
The link to the thread is in my sig.
👍 👍 👍

Edit :
CSS Mini Cooper capture shows the attached image, which, if I remember well my japanese lessons means 4 months and 11 days.
I suspect it's the in-game time required to unlock the car.
Does anyone have a clue how much playing time is means ?
