Hi everyone,

My name is James Grieve and I am the Technical Director on ModNation Racers here at United Front Games in Vancouver, Canada. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to all of you in preparation for the unleashing of the ModNation Racers European Public Beta.

ModNation Racers European Beta

As a lot of you may have heard, the response to the North American beta has been amazing. With tens of thousands of creations published and almost 100,000 online races run, the team here has been amazed at how people have taken to the game. The creativity of players’ creations just blew us away … there was stuff in there even we had never thought of doing :)

We have also received a ton of useful feedback from players, and likewise we hope to hear from all of you. The team is hard at work finishing the game now, and a lot of that feedback is being listened to and addressed. One of the key focuses of the beta has been online stability and load testing. The data we have gathered has been very useful in this regard and the European data will be even more so. We have already used some of this data to tweak our server configurations, so hopefully things should be running nice and smooth. We’re continuing our frame rate optimisations and load time improvements, and these will be ready for the final game.

One thing we were disappointed in was that we weren’t able to release the European Public Beta simultaneously with the North American version. Because of this, we have decided to open up a couple of new tracks and we hope you really like them. They will give you a taste for a little more of what the ModNation Racers experience will have to offer and hopefully they make up for the wait :)

I also just heard that the Public Beta will be released in Australia and New Zealand as well. Although I’ve been in Vancouver for a few years now, I am still an Australian at heart, so I am very happy all my compatriots will be able to join in the fun :)

Anyway, remember to log in to PSN January 21 to get in line for the download. We look forward to being even more surprised by all the creative and exciting stuff that goes on and hope everyone in Europe has a great time in ModNation!

So we get some new tracks to try out which is great.

By the looks of it the track editor is included so extra tracks won't be a huge issue. Nice to see the team keeping us in the "loop" as to whats happening though. Kaz take heed! Anyway, store hasn't updated yet but when it dose can the first person to spot it please shout up so we can all get a chance to download the game, the 100,000 spaces could be taken very quickly though I would imagine it will take a good few hours for all the slots to go.

Yep cheers guys, UK store updated, servers presently flting, 20% = 5 mins. First one to recreate the high speed ring gets mucho Kudos....bagsy the stig LOL

Oh yeah, before anyone mentions the "poor physics" it's an arcade racer in the vein of mario cart, online races and track editor.........expect no more or less from it, could be a blast if theres private lobbys.

I like it 👍

The track editor is very quick to use and should be great when you can use more objects. If a GT5 track editor is not revealed before this hits the shops its a buy for me . Not tried the online yet as been messing around with the editor

It's not going to set the world on fire but as an online arcade racer it's very good! Track editor is very very easy to use as is the mod center for cars and characters. Theres quite a bit of skill needed to ket the hang of the tracks and with the track editor and online publishing aspect theres an endless supply of tracks. Online is not yet active but time trial is available and any tracks you make you can race against a field of AI on it. Oh yeah and the photo mode works well also though is a little basic.

The game isn't without bugs and is a little shallow in places but it could get a big following. Heres Stig in Topgears car of the year.....it's all about that stripe LOL

Looks nice Hereward. 👍 Just downloaded it myself, and gave it a few laps. Very nice indeed! The track editor is very awesome, but recreating something like HSR or Suzy will take some time. ;) I published my track, feel free to give it a go. :)

Will do, I did a very quick HSR......just to see how easy it would be, and thats the thing, you could knock a decent track out in 5 mins.....or knock out an amaizing track in a few hours or longer I supose. I noticed the memory you have available should mean huge tracks such as spa with rediclious amounts of detail should be posible.....I take it the online function is now live? If so I'll throw the stig and his car up for people to have a play with and give a basic HSR a blast.

Aww crap, I was waiting to download it on my US account. Hopefully there are still some spots left, I'll log into my EU account.

Sorry to hear that Hun, it's a good little game, it dose mean however that 100,000 downloads have happened already! Quicker than I expected. Tried a few online races yesterday, 2nd in my first and 1st in the other 3 by a good distance. The trick is drift early get your boost up and when you see the red X on the back of your cart (indicating you've been targeted by a weapon) use your sheild! Once you get to the front everyone else usualy gets tangled in a huge battle so your free to just race away for the XP.

Tried it last night. Im getting a bit of lag/framedropping in races though, and the track editor is very slow. Very cool functions and easy to use though, if they iron out the bugs it will be a kickass game.

in case anybody wonders, i was able to steer with the DFGT, but the pedals dont work. Since it's kind of tricky to push R2 while steering it's not really useable. Hope they include wheel support in the final version, i really suck with the analog stick ( d-pad doesnt work either ).

My biggest gripe would be the horendous loading times......but it dose mention this is an issue there "working on" for the final release. I haven't seen any lag as yet but did suffer a PS3 freeze up in the main square whilst in online mode which required me to restart the system.

myeah the track editor gets pretty laggy here. I press my button to lower/lift the track and i hear some sounds but nothing happens, then a second later it suddenly jumps into place. Ingame if things are going fast it seems like its dropping down to something like 20fps.

Sure hope the loading times get better yeah, those are ridiculous. It's still only a beta, if i look past these little things the game looks awesome, im probably buying it :)

I've just had it lock my PS3 up prety badly again but more worryingly I've come across Glitchers....less than 24 hours in! Now I'm not going to rant and rave about it as it's an unfortunate side to online gaming but very quickly it seemed to spread to most races, a quick look at the time trial also shows thats been glitched also. I supose it's the type of game it is but presently theres not much point playing it, time trials are unbeatable 0:00.042 seconds is kind of obvious and also races are prety much a waste of time with similar things happening.
It's a real shame as the ability to glitch in the game is going to do no end of harm to the games sales. I personaly won't be buying it partly because it's not realy my type of game (though I was being won over) and partly because of the glitching.
Patches can shore up glitches as can be seen in the never ending "fixes" in MW2 and MW and yes the games a beta.....but the developers stated that the game issues had been mostly addressed in the US open/closed beta and the european beta was more a server load teast........The game is far from ready to be put out there and I'm not sure after all the delays Mod Racer has suffered already that the developers can "afford" to take the time to fix all the issues. I suspect a post release patching program which can be very anoying for the customers.
At it's heart the game is a great idea, quite simplistic but it just dosn'r gel together yet, some parts are great and very intuative whilst others just seem to not quite be there and it's frustrating trying to do something whic should be quite simple only to find an over coplicated menu system getting in the way. Try sending a "recent player" some kudos or a message in game for an example of this.

Sorry I'm out.......

I tried the game with a G25 wheel the pedals didn't work but the shifter paddles worked for gas/brake. Or it could have been the two red buttons on the wheel but I think it was the paddles.

This is a beta, and this is probably my biggest issue with beta's being released to the public, but its not the latest build, its probably the build from the closed beta, bugs and all. The devs don't have the time or money to update both the final release and the beta builds to spec. They will patch the beta with what needs to fixed urgently and/or what needs testing before release, everything else will be shuffled into the final game. I would say the final release is much better than what we are currently playing

Like they have said, its a server load test, and is often why devs do a public beta as to get enough people online to put the servers through their paces, all they need is a stable enough build to put out to the public to do so.

Anywho, I'm really enjoying it. The track creator is awesome and I can't wait for the full release to have more options. One thing I never did in all my hours of LittleBigPlanet was finish and publish a level, I have done that within 2 hours of play time with ModNation Racers, and then remixed and republished that level within another hour of play. The creator tools are just awesome, I didn't have that much interest in the game before the beta, now its a must buy for me! I can't wait for release!

I tried a few times, but ran out of "memory" or something. It would never let me build a level the way I wanted it, so I gave up.
