It may just be me, but I think the new Citroen C5 is achingly beautiful, particularly in the estate format.

New winner.

The best thing about the Spyker Aileron is the convertible version has "for the tenacious, no road is impassable" written on it. In Latin.

1952-55 Bentley R Type Continental, body by H.J. Mulliner. It's just so incredibly elegant, which is surprising for a car that's all about brute force from its massive straight six. It's like a silk pillowcase full of doorknobs.

It has to be a sports car. It has to be Italian. And of course, it has to be a Lamborghini.

So, in third place: The modern interpretation of a classic that weirdly looks better than the original model, the Lamborghini Miura concept:

In second place: The original bull made by the man himself (Ferruccio Lamborghini), the 350GTV

And in the first place, a car I discovered browsing trough wikipedia, a rare one off special of the Lamborghini 400GT: The Lamborghini Nembo 400GT-"Monza 400"

Actually, that car was designed by Franco Scaglione & was one of his first creations after splitting from Bertone.

Strangely enough, Ferruccio was not pleased with the 350 GTV at all & had the car redesigned, conceiving the 350 GT.

easy one:

Talbot_Lago_1937_T150_SS.jpg

1937 Talbot Lago T150 SS bodied by Figoni et Falaschi. Of all the french classic era incredible cars, this one is THE one. Even better than the Delage D120, even better than the Bugatti Atlantic and Atalante. This is THE design, the most balanced yet most outrageous. Not a single straight line in the entire car. The epitome of the "teardrop" design school. To me, there is not a most beautiful car in history. It may never be.

That car must have been utterly ground-breaking when it came out in 1937. It is the definition of 'Epic'. Which brings me onto something I have been pondering...

So, in third place: The modern interpretation of a classic that weirdly looks better than the original model, the Lamborghini Miura concept:

asakowsk_miura.JPG

Never been a massive fan of retro styling myself. The original Miura, 250 GTO, GT40, Challenger, Mustang, Beetle, Mini etc. all stand out as groundbreaking designs of the time, either pushing the boundaries of how materials could be used or designed to fulfill a purpose. For example, the original Mini was designed to the brief of having maximum interior space with minimum exterior dimensions. The 250 GTO was designed in order to compete competitively in circuit racing, it's timeless lines honed in a wind tunnel and track testing, as was the GT40. The Miura was effectively an after-hours project by Lamborghini staff designed to be able to compete with Ferrari on track whilst introducing ground-breaking aerodynamics (which may or may not have worked so well). Of course, all these cars were particularly striking in their appearance and went down in legend. The fact that these cars have been be recreated in a modern guise is a testament to their original designers ingenuity, but they literally only exist because of the originals and, on the whole, only offer style to succeed.

In fact the CEO of Lamborghini couldn't have put it any better when asked if they were planning to put the concept Miura into production:

“The Miura was a celebration of our history, but Lamborghini is about the future. Retro design is not what we are here for. So we won’t do the Miura.”

Yes, I guess they're kinda fun but I don't think I can name a retro-styled car that surpasses the original in terms of beauty. Maybe you guys can...

For a bonus point, what do you think the first retro-styled car was?

That thing looks like a turd after a lot of red wine.

I wonder if that was ever part of the design brief? "Eh, Figoni! You remember that bottle of cabernet sauvignon we had last night? Well, it's given me a great idea!"

Figoni! You're sitting on the clay!

Figoni! You're sitting on the clay!

Well, what can I say Figoni? Nothing other than, what you've come up with is a piece of s**t!

Moving on...

Although I'm sure you post that with a sense of irony, that car is actually quite a pretty design. I don't see anything ugly about it and it actually has some quite nice features. If that was painted silver, with big wheels and a concept car 8 years ago, people would have raved about it I'm sure.

...The Stingray Concept
Chevrolet-Stingray_Concept_2009_160.jpg

They really should produce this in a limted way like the Lamborghini Reventon. They should not waste an extraordinary design like this. I understand that Chevrolet would be losing money on every unit sold, but... still... stupid bean-counters.

P.S: Maybe they could produce it as a one-off, modern Grand Sport... :)

I shall add a few contributions:

As I mentioned when agreeing with Stotty on a previous page, I think there are very few beautiful modern cars. Whether that's because cars age gracefully or whether it's because sleek, mean and sharp angles are now the order of the day rather than petite, curvaceous and pretty I'm not sure, but modern cars just don't manage it. Having thought very hard though, one of the few "modern" cars that goes against this trend is this:

FIAT-Barchetta-1-8-16V---1995-2003-.jpg

The Fiat Barchetta. It's one of the most effortless pieces of modern car design around, albeit one that isn't produced any more. Earlier ones like the car above are better than later ones because they're less agressive. Without a number plate they're virtually perfect, and they seem to look best in silver, rather than the red above. It's a modern car that geninely works from all angles. It just needs some little chrome mirrors...
