Cup cars in NASCAR run so low that they frequently get stuck if they end up off track. In the past they would need to be towed out, but from this season they now have an air suspension fitted that can lift the cars up via a small air tank carried by the safety crews, saving time and allowing the cars to get back to the pits more quickly. The system was demonstrated on Casey Mears' car after a spin in the first Duel race earlier this week.

Watch for about 25 seconds to see it in action and hear it described.

Watched this yesterday. It's a brilliant idea.

I'm all for anything that reduces the chances of, and/or, the amount of time wasted circulating behind a Pace/Safety Car.
 
From the video, it looks like the car ended up upside down, preventing Luke from getting out of the car without help.
A fuel leak in that situation would be utterly terrifying.
 
Red Bull Showrun came to San Francisco last weekend. Scott Speed crashed one of the Red Bull RB7s and the other RB7 caught fire while Yuki Tsunoda was doing donuts.

The almost immediate deceleration after impact looked very frightening. Those kinds of sudden stops can break necks or skulls.

As @DG_Silva says above, was a time when that kind of crash would have led to a broken neck, or a lot worse.
Thankfully, the HANS has no doubt saved a lot of lives, and kept people walking instead of dealing with a life changing disability.
 
2016 Trans Am at Sebring. Tristan Herbert has a brake failure going into turn 7, crashes through a gate onto the public highway outside the circuit, narrowly avoids a utility truck and takes a tour of a hotel car park before eventually finding his way back to the bridge into the paddock.

I couldn't find a non-clickbaity thumbnailed version, alas.



10 years later at this year's 12 Hours last weekend the #48 Winward Racing Mercedes had a failure - not brakes this time - and brought the car back to the paddock the same way:

They really, really need to do something about this before it costs a lot more.
Two times they've been extremely lucky and I really wouldn't want to be at the wheel with a stuck throttle.
 
Just the slightest touch in the dirt was all it took, and going into a downhill turn as well.

Luckily for Scotty Mac the inadequacy of the run off area and the fence worked in his favour this time.

GT World Challenge America at Sebring from just over a week ago. The #32 Porsche of Tom Sargent caught Ryan Yardley in the #31, and in their battle the front bumper of Sargent's car becomes dislodged, but he completes the pass a lap later. So far, so normal...



...but a few laps later Sargent runs wide across the grass which pushes the bumper back into place.



(Secondary shoutout to the commentator who foreshadows that happening at 2:03:35.)

Very happy that Tom is making the best of his chances overseas, and didn't just line up hoping for a domestic V8 seat at home.
 
What is happening at Monza?

The more pressing question is, how on earth has the 48 missed ALL of this chaos? Car was literally right there and somehow missed being taken out (or taking another car out).

Also, gotta feel for the Boutsen VDS Porsche. They have not finished a single lap this season.

Usually, I'd blame Monza's first chicane but they were going like eighteen-wide before the Rettifilo.

Look, the Variate de Rettifilo isn't a sacred cow like Curva Grande, Lesmos, nor Parabolica. It's a terrible track tumor that gets worse every decade; we all know it but nobody wants to admit it.
