Look a little harder. The later ones are too common to be valuable.

Eh. I'm more a Golf guy. The 3door variant. I just saw a few 1998-2000's on autotrader with under 80,000 miles for about $3,500. Stickshifts even. I like golfs :)

A note on MKIV Vee-Dubs:

Steer clear of any made before 2003, they're very "iffy" when it comes to quality, and to be brutally honest, it doesn't make a damn difference if they came from Mexico or Germany. They all were, for the most part, crap.

You may be able to find one in good shape, and if you do, grab onto it tightly; They're very hard to find, but that being said, with the nature of the cars, most of the issues should have been shaken out since then.

...Probably...

I still wouldn't get anything older than a 2003, this coming from the VW guy (well, not so much anymore...).

I can't find much under 4,000 from 2003 and older though.

(Baja bug though, THAT'S what I'd do)

Already own one :sly:

No, you'd be looking at the 8-10K range there. For that kind of money you're likely going to want to look towards an MKIII (1993-1999.5) or a well-kept MKII (1985-1992) to get your money's worth.

MKIIs are cool cars if I do say so myself. But how easy would it be to find parts?

If I was going up that high for my price I'd easily snatch up something with more appeal than a Golf. Heck, if I was going up that price range I'd probably say screw it, buy a V8 Camaro/Mustang/Trans-Am and pay the rest of it for insurance.

Not too difficult. At the time almost all the parts were the same in almost all of the VWs, minor differences separated some of them. My Fox of the era, for instance, although it was on its on frame... Had a Golf engine and suspension, a Passat/Quantum transmission, and all of the other common parts inside.

With the Jetta/Golf, its pretty much the same deal. Given their age, its going to be a bit more difficult, but they're still pretty easy to find, relatively cheap too.

I thought Volkswagen had a world wide program that they never stopped manufacturing parts for any of their cars? If that's true, parts would always be there for the taking.

That is because at any 1 time, there are 4 different 20 year old outdated VWs being made somewhere. They can be found, but you have to import them if you want new.

Generally speaking, yes. They're still making parts for most of the various generations of VWs, but as noted, you're going to have to have them shipped. Thankfully the VW dealer I used to have mine serviced at was the parts distributor for West Michigan, so it was pretty easy to get my hands on things... But that being said, because I had an MKIII, parts weren't quite as common as what would be found for the recently discontinued MKIV cars. Thats where VW junkyards come in, and we have a HUGE one on the north end of town.

One recalls that they still sell the MKIII Jetta (or is it Passat?) in China, and the MKI Golf is still being sold in South Africa (and South America too?). It all depends. Given the enthusiast community, for the most part, parts are easy to come by.

Hey guys, new question.

First gen Focus, 5 spd, 3 Door hatch Anybody have any problems with it? Is it a fun little car to drive?

My cousin has a 2000 sedan auto that she just used to get from point a to b. I havent heard that it has had any problems so it should be reliable but I'm not sure about the fun factor.

My mom had the a 2005 5door with an automatic. not fun at all.

But, an I4 Escape with a slushbox is slow and tough with mileage.
I4 Escape with a 5spd is pretty damn quick.

And by that, I mean I'm pretty sure it beats a 3.9L Auto V6 Mustang(2004) to 60mph.

I've got some financial statistics up if anybody would like to look, comment at what I'm thinking.

Ok, based on slightly more aggressive driving for gas mileage and what not, and a Geico quote for a 1995 Mustang GT, I've got some financial statistics. I calculated all the gas money with 87 Octane running $4.00 a gallon. Here's how it breaks down.

15.4 gallons
270 mpt
30 miles/day
900 miles/month
61.60 to fill up
$205/ month for gas

200/month insurance

$405/month total

Purposely overdid my driving and the miles I can get to a tank so as not to underbudget.

I should be able to make between $520-$580 a month.

That's a lot of money, what you're earning and how much it will cost. I hope you don't like socialising too much ;)

If you get a Focus get a 5dr with a stick. And get one from 2002+. 2000's specifically had a few "issues". Great first car and they can be fun to drive in the twisties. Lackluster acceleration however until you drop the PowerWorks supercharger on that ZETEC to wake it up.

Must have sexy Gen I Focus with ecotec!

Sexy meaning 3 door dropped on black racing rims.

Ecotec = GM, ZETEC/Duratec = Ford. The ZX5/5dr looks better in my opinion. If you have the money I'd get a 2004 model with the 2.3L Duratec--those are pretty decent and have some good aftermarket stuff.

My bad. I meant EcoBoost. I doubt I'll have the money for a 2004. I'm not a fan of it's headlights either.

As of about 10 cents more per gallon on gas, this will be completely how the costs will be. Here's my comparo of my 2 best choices.

What I lust for
Mustang GT 5.0L
15.4 gallons
270 mpt
30 miles/day
900 miles/month
61.60 to fill up
$205/ month for gas
200/month insurance
$405/month total

Lust for another reason
Miata 1.8L
12.7 Gallons
290 mpt
30 miles/day
900 miles/month
51.00 to fill up
157/ month for gas
200/ month insurance
357/ month total

Anybody find it weird that I was quoted the same for a Miata as a Mustang GT?

If work to earn the money, the good for you, hope one of them works out for you soon. Wouldn't have a clue about the insurance quotes thing.

The GT was quoted as only a little over 200 hp, and it's a pretty old car. However, Miatas are known for being pretty cheap on insurance, aren't they?

That's what I thought, but it sure ain't turnin' out that way. The gas would be the only thing I'd save

The GT is pushin 215-225 horsepower with 205 at the wheels.

Mustang
6.7 to 60
15.1 for a 1/4

Miata
7.9 to 60
15.9 for a 1/4

That's a pretty noticeable difference for the same exact insurance payment...

Usually, yes. I'm normally quoted around $90-110 a month on the Miata despite its performance capabilities. The Mustang is quite a bit higher... Then again, I'm older and don't have any accidents against my record. Meh.

*Goes off an angry rampage at stupid 16 year old and his Grand Marquis*

Alright guys, my sister just informed me her friends dad is selling their Prelude. I'm pretty sure it's not the VTEC, so that's all good. Only issue is the AC doesn't work. I figure with open windows I could get by 'till I get the money to fix it.

I believe it's about a '94 'Lude. It's somewhere in the '92-'96 generation

Have any experience with these?

EDIT: Alright, just went and checked it out a bit, really only a little. What I noticed is what I thought, the at least 1 inch drop and nice paint. It's got stock rims and overall looks nice, even has leather interior. I couldn't find the Odometer on the thing through the window, but I did find that it is either an Si or a VTEC. The gauge reads Premium Unleaded Only, so I think it's a VTEC. Got a nice shiny shifter on it too :) Only gripe with it from the looks, it's got your typical coffe can exhaust...

5 bucks says it sounds like a rubber band.
