The GT3 cars really do suffer from straight line speed, even the GT3 Cup cars were faster in a straight line. Lots of aero equals lots of drag I guess.
Yup, All that downforce comes at a price.

Also I don't believe that Max's team was trying to cheat at all, I think someone just miscalculated somewhere...

I really don't believe it either but on the other hand a professional racing team operating on that level should be above miscalculations like that. But then again, mistakes happen and it won't change anything now. They should make sure that stuff like this doesn't happen at the 24h race.
It doesn't really matter they had their "practice" and the important one is the 24h race.
100%! They've shown what they're capable of and I can't wait to see them at the big race in May together with Lucas Auer in the car. It's going to be great!

A question.

I have been watching bits and pieces of the replay of the race over the last couple of days. I noticed something during one of the pit stops for the GT3 cars. When they were changing the tires the camera was fairly close in and it showed the central locking nut being tightened to the left instead of the right. I had noticed it in the past when they would use those long manual torque wrenches to snug up once the car was on the ground. They torque to the left.

Is that the way all of those central locking systems work and I've just never noticed it until now? Tighten to the left, loosen to the right?

I have an idea. Doesn't make sense in the way the BoP is created at NLS/N24. Not to dive too deep but race time or a fast laps alone aren't a mayor factor. Unlike LM24 and others they don't run torque sensors due to costs but teams still need to run mandatory data loggers before the 24hs from ADAC. With these in every car under BoP the ADAC Technikausschuss (technical committee) who is resposible for the BoP has lots of aquired data to know the capatibilities of each car down to each car on different tires due to different manufacturers allowed in SP9. The BoP is quite deep f.e. including rake, rear wing angles and of course ride height and everything around weight and power/torque (down to boost limitations for specific rpm-ranges). The BoP can (and was in last years) adjusted anytime and since 2025 even during the race when cars are too fast/slow.
Analysing acceleration zones in different gears and speeds and even temperatures, cornering capatibilities, fuel low or with a full tank, new tires/old tires, etc. etc. etc. gives way more info creating the BoP than "Merc won with 1 min". Those old times where nobody had a clue and teams could massively sandbag are long gone. Disqualified or not they gathered the data. Just doesn't make sense to DSQ since no impact on the data and with the tire pilot the data which tire ran when and how long is part of the aquired data.

I saw the BMW Z4 GT3 had a crash in the opening hour and I think they were only going to run 2 hours because of something they were doing with the tires.

English Commentary for the first of the N24 Qualifiers.

Edit: Just in time for the qualifier to be red-flagged.

Edit 2: Nothing's been officially confirmed, but some folks on the r/WEC Discord are saying that a bunch of the Group 2 cars are stopped on the track. Based on that and seeing the glimpse of an ambulance driving on to the Nordschlife itself from another cars on-board, there might've been a significant accident on the track.

Edit 3: Race control has confirmed an incident involving "several cars." I'm going to assume that the race is going to be red-flagged for a while.

I'm just tuning in now too - fingers crossed that no-one has been injured.

An accident involving several vehicles 'from the mid-30s (on the grid)' near the Carousel... 😥

I have to work today so I've only been able to peak in occasionally. Do they have the helicopter coverage for this race? The last two NLS races had helicopter footage. Unless they don't want to show the footage yet.

There are helicopters, but either they're not flying currently, or if they are, they're not showing camera footage right now due to the accident.

By the sounds of things, at least one driver was seen walking away from the accident, but the status of everyone else involved hasn't been confirmed yet.

I'm looking at an onboard screenshot of the crash. It's bad; I can't really tell what's going on, but the cars are mangled, one is over the barrier.

Yeahhh, I saw a screenshot a moment ago, and it's not looking great.

Fingers crossed that the drivers involved are all ok, but there's definitely a lot of damage on the track, and it's gonna take a while to clear it all up.

Edit: New info from race control:

It's also sounding like there was a substantial amount of fluid on the track, and that's what kicked off the whole thing.

Scoring and positions have been reset, but the 4-hour timer is still running down by the sounds of things.

Edit 2: Race has officially been suspended until further notice.

The race has been suspended.

I doubt it will restart if the crash is as bad as it sounds like it is. :(

Cars involved:

#27 Aston Martin GT3
#111 BMW 325i
#121 BMW 325i
#410 Porsche Cayman
#448 Porsche Cayman
#503 Toyota Supra
#992 Porsche 911 Manthey

Injured drivers are being attended to, and barrier repairs are on-going.

Sad to hear that there are injured driver(s) - I hope that they are not seriously hurt.

What an absolutely horrible outcome.

Just came across these stats for Miettinen: 53 starts, 5 wins, 25 podiums. A 9.4% win percentage and a 47.2% podium percentage.

May he rest in peace. :(

This sucks so much, i have watched and followed these races on the Nurburgring for years, love the atmosphere and banter on the YT chat, being online at night seeing the drivers battle through the most punishing track in the world.

ARGH!

And he just got P1 last week..

RIP

Absolutely horrible news. RIP Juha.

Its sad to think in this day of so many modern day safety features, this can still happen.

Theres some videos on YouTube with commentators giving their thoughts and also theres some still photographs at the accident scene. Juha definately got the worst of it. Probably got hit on the drivers side ( like Mark Porter in 2006 or Keith Odor in 1995 )
