But not this season as the competition is too much.

Agreed. We have discussed this many times. Gordon is way past his prime. He still runs strong, but his bad luck earlier this season has essentially killed all chances he has of making the Chase. Next year, however, I wouldn't doubt that he could win the championship. With JG's retirement coming pretty soon (I'd say in 5 years), he is running as strong as he possibly can. In 2013 we will see his bad luck turn around and he will run just like he did last year.

If he does somehow make the Chase, I would love to see him pull off a Tony Stewart move, dominate the Chase, and win the championship.

Is it wrong to say that Tony Stewart has always been in his prime? lol Because these past 8 months he's been on fire!

I missed the race. I've only seen the results and can't view any video highlights because the video player on NASCAR.com isn't supported on my iPad. Anyone can give me a quick rundown on how we got to the results?

I wonder who's going to be the first driver to reach 20 career wins. Edwards, Junior and Hamlin are all tied at 19 wins each.

Kyle Busch led, then Hamlin led after Busch had pitstop issues. Hamlin lead for a good amount of time, then miscommunication caused him to drop back in the field and led to Kasey winning.

Thanks 👍 I usually record the races but I had so much going on that I forgot

I'd say realistically looking at the season, Hamlin and Dale Jr have a far better chance to do so. Carl just seems to be lacking that pace he had last year. Out of Jr or Hamlin, I'm kinda leaning towards Jr as he's been having his best season in a long time while Denny has shared JGR's mostly bad luck.

His specific words which you quoted were "Past his prime".

Gordon may still be competitive, he may still have a few race wins in him... and if he can string those wins together he may even win a championship!

But he's wayyyy past the good ole' days where he was winning 1/3 of the races in a given season.

Not to mention Gordon causing his own downfall:

As the listed car owner of a five-time champion, Jeff should be called Nine-time.

Gordon is past his prime. Johnson will be getting past that soon as well, if he hasn't hit that downward curve yet. But, being past their prime doesn't necessarily mean they are no longer contenders for anything. If it wasn't for Jeff's poor luck this year, he'd have at least one win and at least be in contention for the top 10 in points.

Also with how strong the competition is these days, it's much more difficult for someone to be dominant in the season. With the chase, it's sort of skewed it in comparison to a decade ago where you had to be good for the entire season instead of keeping yourself in good standing for the entire season and then letting it all out for the last 10 races.

I'm not a fan of the chase, or many of NASCAR's changes recently to try to make things more interesting. I'd say the chase was a jump at changing the championship because Matt Kenseth had won it without winning a race in 2003. Instead, they should have changed the points system to benefit wins more than consistency. Just look at the points system in Nationwide and Trucks without the chase. The championship stays close amongst the top drivers and without any swaying of the points after a "cut off" it doesn't ruin the way the championship plays out.

I look forward to the day NASCAR decides the chase isn't needed anymore and they dump it like a bad habit, even if deep down I know it probably won't happen.

"12-time" if we really want to get technical.

He was the owner of Jack Sprague's Craftsman Truck Series entrant when he won the 3 championship's in the #24 Chevy Silverado.

Edit: Well, that was a slip of the brain. Meant to edit and include the above quote in my post above instead of making a new post. :dunce:

Don't get me started

You know that's the thing...I wonder where FIVE-TIME would have ended up if FOUR-TIME didn't have recognized his talent? RCR perhaps? Hell DEI maybe?

Jeff Gordon would still be in his prime if the higher ups at Nascar didn't "want to be like other sports". BTW Matt won "a" race in 2003

Few? He has a ton of race wins left in him. I think he can tie the silver bullet.

And Rick's nickname is "Ten-Time"! And that leads me to this question. Petty Enterprises has Ten championships as well right? Didn't Lee Petty win his 3 championships with PE?

Stop giving everyone nicknames that only you refer to as nicknames and then use them in public. And yes PE has 10 championships however, unlike Hendrick, not all of the races were run in PE cars when Lee Petty won his 3 titles.

Gordon past his prime? No, he is still running well. 2012 is simply just a bad year for him.

You want to talk about a driver that should hang up the helmet, Mikey Waltrip.

Micheal is still a great plate racer though. If anyone should retire it's the other Jeff at RCR.

Nope. Burton can retire when he wants to. Sadly he got burned by Roush (not a shock).

He can retire when he wants to sure. But he's become somewhat of a field filler nowadays, they need to put someone else in the famed #31.

I'm sorry, did you say "Famed 31?" Was that supposed to be a joke that nobody got? Only 2 drivers (Robby Gordon and Jeff Burton) have won in that car # for a combined total of 7 wins. Your ignorance continues to amaze me.

So Mcmurry wasn't the only driver to have gotten the shaft by Jack. I'm interested in how that happened because all I remember is suddenly, his car was sponsorless prior to leaving, then Carl Edwards jumps in.

Haha

Well Robby Gordon is pretty famous outside of Nascar.

Maybe the new sponsors found Carl to be more marketable?

When I think of the 31 car, all I can picture is Neil Bonnett's black #31 Goodwrench-clone flipping up into the Talladega catchfence. This was around 1993, as best I remember.

I don't know how exactly it happened but all I remember is that I was fairly shocked when I heard Roush letting Burton go. I feel as if Roush did the same thing he's doing now, scared away potential sponsors by asking for too much and it came and took away Burton, who was in my eyes a very good driver.

Could this be what has also happened with Trevor Bayne on the Nationwide side? Supposedly, he's finally got a sponsor in place from Bristol (I need to find a pic somewhere), but I do wonder if this is what has transpired.

I think of the blue and yellow Lowes car which had Mike Skinner at the wheel.
