There's been 5 known incidents of racers colliding with safety trucks in the last 30 years.
I'd say it's "ultra rare". Thousands of races, thousands more race cars. The odds of anything like that happening is extremely low.

Does anyone know if this is correct? It definitely doesn't sound right. I know the rule is if the next word starts with a vowel, you use "an" but if not you use "a." Is this just an exception or does everyone say it the wrong way without ever noticing? Somebody get Famine in here.

AP Stylebook (used in media) a/an is based on what the noun sounds like. In traditional writing formats for things such as literary pieces it is a hard rule based in the actual starting letter.Off topic: That's a good question, I have never seen this before.
