Ok, just started watching it about 5 minutes ago as the cars were coming down pit lane, but anyway, why are they allowed cut the track like that and why are they doing it? Is it a new run off area which people are taking if things get too tight?

I was just about to ask! People were going down there while in no danger of a crash so why don't they just go down there all there time.

Its a mix of passing another car and a safe place in case things get crazy.

So why don't they use it all the time?

It doesn't give an insanely huge advantage and can be tricky when going back onto the actual racing surface.
