My Old Corsa (2005) keeps breaking down and i need a new car.
I have a budget of £9000/$18000 and i'm willing to do US Imports

I'd like something quite fun and newer than 5 years old :)

Thanks,
Danster

That sounds like quite an impressive budget. How "fun" are we talking here? RWD? Manual? Give us some more details on what you'd like.

So no AWD? OK, hmm, let me think. Upmarket of Miata, sounds like a sports car still, I always recommend something non-FWD, that kind of money. Do you like Supras at all? Or import a Camaro/Mustang maybe?

I can afford a camaro? sounds nice. do they still make holden monaros?

The Vauxhall Monaro is unappealing to drive and it's overpriced.

Oh, you'll do Aussie imports as well? No, they don't make them any more. Most are V8s, and because you'd have to buy used from overseas there's a good chance it will have been mis-treated/thrashed by the previous owner and you wouldn't know until you got it :indiff: Actually I just seen, it was $18 000, not 18 000pounds, so you couldn't even afford a Monaro probably.
Camaros from the '90s are cheap as nuts, cheaper even. Again though, buying a used V8 without being able to check it I guess. Were Camaros sold in Scotland at all?
What about a BMW 3-series, can you afford them? Could get one of them.

That many problems that new!? And it's not even a Volkswagen....

That said, I think I'd still recommend a VW product and say go on a used A4 or maybe even pick up a new Rabbit or Mazda 3.

No, they didn't sell Chevys at all in Scotland until the Daewoo merger, I put in an offer on a used 5-series at auction but that was unsuccessful. I might put in an offer on a Dodge Magnum when i visit the states in June. Are These good?

Wouldn't know, I am an Aussie. Camaros use the same engines as Holdens which is why I can talk them up a bit. A Magnum is the big wagon isn't it? You should also consider a Holden VE SV6 Wagon

The V8 models will keep up with WRXs at Bathurst :)

Edit: Woops, forgot the price range :banghead:

OK. I would love to keep chatting, but I really ought to go to bed. I'll be back tomorrow but now it's 1am so yeah, bedtime ;) See ya.

...

Seriously?

You can't get many V8 Muscle cars here for much less, and from what i've heard it's a blast to drive.

How much restoration work are you willing to do?

Bear in mind how much a V8 will cost to run here, too (petrol, tax, insurance).

Volvo T5 edition of some sort? The turbo nutter version of a normal Volvo.

BMW M3 or 5?

A US import might be a bit easier than getting some Holden hauled into Prestwick from some yard in brisbane.

Why are you looking at importing something? All of the best cars we have here are available over there. And you have lots of cars over there that we would kill for. All I can see is importing an old classic, which wouldn't be too good of a daily driver.

And if you're looking for something Australian, I'd recommend popping over to your local Vauxhall dealer.

You die for British Cars, We die for American Cars

Eh?

Anyway, there's a 1965 ford Mustang Coupe being advertised in the back of this weeks Autosport for £8,995 with a new MOT if you're interested.

:boggled: I don't know what we have here that you don't have over there that anybody would consider owning, especially in the crowded streets of Europe. YSSMAN can praise the new Malibu all he wants, but that's still a Michigan opinion, where the only competition is the Taurus and Sebring. I wouldn't even consider picking one up over a Golf or something in that range you have over there.

American Imports are much cheaper anyway, My Dads clattering Minivan was bought for$30,000 in June 2004.

The Rabbit here starts at $15,600. Over there, you are looking at £12,255 or $24,424. Do the importing taxes and costs and conversion charges and things make up an extra $10,000 ~ £5,000? Wouldn't there be provisions against it to make it less economical because everybody would be doing that if they knew it was cheaper. That and you'd be driving on the wrong side of the road.

I talked to a lot of people about cars while I was in the UK and not one of them ever said they were dreaming of something from America. Most laughed at them and said all "real" cars come from Europe. Look for a used Mazdaspeed 3/MPS, they aren't overly expensive here in the states and would meet your budget I would guess.

People in the not-so-crowded streets of scotland die for Buicks and Caddilacs
Lots of us also own Dodges and some imported fords.

Yes. You can. You can get a used, low miles 2002 Camaro SS for under 18,000.

Therefore making all of them available.

Thanks for all your help. I'm going down to a mitsubishi dealer tomorrow to enquire about a colt cabriolet. I Phoned a used car dealer five minutes ago about the corsa and i got a hefty quote of £4800 (about $9000)

Upscale of a miata and you get that?

*Leaves thread*

I cant find anything wrong with the colt. I'll put in a new steering wheel and play with the suspension.

It looks like it's downscale of an MX-5 to me.

Must be my Americanized thinking. And the fact our engines will be the size of your interior

USA: Big

Big Country, Big Cars, Big Trains, Big Cities, Big Buildings, Big Airports, Big Houses, Big People, Big Burgers

Maybe i'm stereotyping, but the colt is a good car, Plus, it's greener than some V8 I'd pick up stateside

Hey now. I'll agree with everything but the big people as a sweeping stereotype. Those of us who choose to have even a psuedo-active lifestyle are normal sized.

I personally know nothing of the Colt, but to me it looks like 100% econobox. I'm guessing you live in Europe and in constricted streets, so it does make sense, but it just doesn't tickle my fancy.

"Big People" comes from my horrifying trip to San Diego and LA when i got crushed by a very fat person into a window when i was on a bus.

I know it's a pretty true stereotype, but it really isn't as bad as it's made out to be. 10-25 year olds now here really don't have the weight issue, it comes as they get older if they just stop moving.
