EDIT: ^ Truth.

Hey, their Focus runs circles around ours, as does the Accord (Our TSX) and the Mondeo is definitely better than the Fusion.

You wait until you see the Mk4 Mondeo. Whoooo-ee, that moves the game on a step for the family car.

The Eclipse would never have sold in Europe anyway - it's a pup. The sheer number of two door FWD coupes we get which are more reliable, faster, get better fuel economy, prettier and any combination thereof would have swamped it.

I would buy it. The Eclipse is the best looking FWD coupe from Japan I've ever seen.

@ for reliability, I still see a crapload of the things running around after 10-15 years, so I think they're good enough there.

@ Jim, if our Focus runs circles around yours, you must have the most gutless Focus known to man!

Eclipse...From Japan...

LOL!!!!

Those things are made in a cornfield 1/2 hour from my house!!! At least, assembled there. Many of the parts come from Japan, although most of the trim bits are molded locally. The bodies are stamped there, they're welded there, the plastic parts are molded AT the factory...

That car is VERY American.

Well technically it's japanese. If you're going by that you may as well call a Camry as american as it gets. Total BS.

I'd be apt to say that, actually. that car was basically made for Americans. Furthermore, it seems to be slipping into that grade of build quality.

Oh, you didn't notice? I'm from the Midwest. I'm as American as you. So, the Focus comment meant that the Euro Focus is Brilliant, and all the American one achieves is eating children.

Ahh. I just didn't put 2 and 2 together. I only saw the avvie. I still would not buy a Camry though. Malibu FTW

It's a mess. It's behind the FTO, MX-3, Accord Coupe, Civic Coupe and even the MX-6. And that's without having to bring the pretty boys from Europe - Alfa GTV/GT/Brera and 406 Coupe V6 leading the pack.

Mitsubishis are the lowest-placed of the Japanese manufacturers in every reliability survey conducted in the UK ever. In fact, they're the only one in the bottom half of the tables every time - behind even Daihatsu.

There's a reason Mitsubishi didn't bring the Eclipse to Europe. It just wouldn't have sold - it has no redeeming features to put it on anyone's list ahead of the competition.

Mind you, I'd rather have that than a Colt CZC (*hand on the tiller*)

Buuut the question was about why Europe didn't get the Eclipse (or at least why we "suck so bad for normal cars" because we didn't get it).

Toronado - Just the Probe. The Cougar had a Ford V6, not a Mazda V6 with "Ford" stamped on the rocker cover.

Duratorq = diesel. Duratec = petrol. The Mondeo/Contour V6 and Cougar V6 had the Duratec V6, a 2.5 litre (2544, I think) engine putting out about 168hp. The Probe/MX-6 had the KL-DE Mazda V6, a 2.5 litre (249x) engine putting out about 167hp. The MX-6 also had the KL-ZE, a higher compression KL-DE putting out nearly 200hp, but only in Japan.

Gotcha.

Why must Japan keep their good stuff for themselves?!

That, and most Americans aren't prepared for the awesomeness that is the "true" Japanese car. You know, cars like the WiLL and 'i' that populate their streets. Cars so odd they make your eyes twitch and Pokemon shoot out your butt...

But hey, what do I know?

For God's sake, this is the land of the Taurus and Impala. We never get anything right here...

That's what you get when you buy a Mitsubishi.

Not to mention a heavier-than normal 'vert with what, 100 horsepower? That's a recipe for a lethargic mode of transportation if I ever heard one.

This is going absolutely nowhere.

So, wait, what were we supposed to do? Nod and agree? You asked for our opinions, we gave them, you essentially gave them all the finger, and went along with your own business.

Now we make fun of you because we can...

That many problems that new!? And it's not even a Volkswagen....

That said, I think I'd still recommend a VW product and say go on a used A4 or maybe even pick up a new Rabbit or Mazda 3.

VW's in europe arents regarded as unreliable at all. Same cannot be said for GM products however.

Well, I think that SEATs are the cheap and ugly Spanish bastard-children of VW and FIAT.

Two can play at this game.
