Has anyone downloaded this demo from the PS-Store? It's really good!

It's a JRPG that is like a mix of Pokemon and the 'Tales' series of games.

It's very fun. 👍

Yep, I've put my name down for the Wizard edition when it gets released on the 25th of this month.

I've been following this game since I heard about it a couple of years ago, it got a release last year on the DS in Japan but didn't find its way to us unless imported.

Because the artwork and cinematic direction was done by Studio Ghibli it's like playing one of thier films.

The JRPG aspect of the game caught my eye, but this is what really grabbed my attention...

A game with the artwork done by one of the best art studios ever.

Made my decision. Gonna buy this on release, just need to find some spare dough.

Honestly, I rolled my eyes when I saw this thread assuming what the game would be. Then I saw this:

Now I'm buying it.

It's just a no-brainer. Grave of the fireflies + Dark Cloud makers? PSHT!

def buying it, though not the wizard edition. cheapest place ive found it at is selling it for 40 euros, if thers a store selling it cheaper, ill get it there.

also ghibli has great animation, creativity and lush detail in their backgrounds. but the art used for these movies is one of the easiest, cheapest and simplest in the industry. only a few are even simpler than ghibly, like disney for example. 1 good aspect for this simple style is that it it is much MUCH easier and far less work to animate them with a high quality of animation. these are in fact some of the ugliest styles around, but very simple to animate.

more complex styles with lots of shading and lots of muscles and extra details being shown is much harder to animate and has far more work cut out for it. imagine a street fighter 3 artstyle with final fantasy 6 designs and try to animate that with the same amount of frames and quality used for the best ghibli and deisnety pictures. there would be at least 5x the amount of work needed to pull this of.

that being said, even simple styles can look great while maintaining some of the greatest animation know to mankind, akira is a prime example of this.

obviously im talking about handdrawn animation, 3rd is cheap, ugly and has no life to it. 3d to this day has failed to show emotional expressions on the level of handdrawn animations, which is on par with the greatest of the greatest of real actors. though a good voice over is just as important to get this done in handdrawn animation. imo a dub is an insult to the work of the artists, no matter a chinese kung fu flick or japanese animation, a sub is the only way to watch it as it was intended.

A Studio Ghibli game? Wait... wha?

That's it, I'm booting up the PS3 again...

Good to see everyone seems to be warming to the game. For those who haven't, give the demo a bash!

I tried the demo to see what the fuzz was about, I just don't get it.... Boring, childish and something for 12 to 14 year olds. It's like adult men that like watching my little pony. There is an age you really are to old for these kind of things and I think I have reached that.

Definitely not a game for me. But still, people who do like, enjoy every minute of it!

It's as mature as any so called 'mature' games are if not more so. Personally, I don't see how it can be classified a child's game purely because of aesthetics. I don't like Anime at all, or many cartoons to be honest but this game is bloody beautiful.

Well seeing your avatar, I understand you do not see why it would be considered a kids game. As far as anime goes, it is a little childish. It does look spectacular though.

I like the fibe this game gives. It is innocent. And wether or not you find this game childish or not, just enjoy it for what it is or what you think it is.

Shouldn't really make judgments based on things like Avatars. But I see where you are coming from.

Sometimes it's good to play fantasy games rather than brown-and-bloom which rules the industry today.

I tried out the demo today, and I really enjoyed it. The combat system looks like it may get a bit used to (used to playing live combat), but the game as a whole is incredible! Judging from what the demo has provided the player, the game will most likely give the characters some pretty unique progression as the two Chapters the demo gives have Oliver redone with new allies, clothing, etc., and one with him just in casual clothes w/ suspenders so there will probably be some strong story progression, or split apart into Quests that bundle up to the same or different outcome. Other than that everything is 100% well-done.

Looks like I can afford to get this on release. Been playing the demo again and again seen the reviews now too and I can honestly say I am very excited to play this.

Ok guys in the USofA you lucky people should be able to pick it up today. I however have to wait till Friday.

I read some more impressions from Kotaku stating he has put 14 hours in to it and is loving every second. Personally I cant wait much longer, Friday is going to be an great day as I'm off work and I will pick this up as soon as my local store opens at 9am.

Well I've put a couple of hours into it and captured some using my iPhone. It's a great game.

Tried the demo and like so many modern JRPG I didn't like the combat/battle system at all.

I must admit before playing this game I wasn't a fan of this style of combat system, but after getting used to it I really do enjoy the way you can switch between familiars and your main character.

If anyone is finding it tricky you can use the bottom shoulder buttons to switch between the options durin battle and it makes for a more fluid experience.

I'm just very old school when it comes to battle systems in JRPGs, if it's not a static, turn based system as found in FF games up to X I'm usually not interested. Last JRPG I played and like was Lost Odyssey on the 360. I know I'm in a minority though, most people seem to like the 'action' battles.

I'm actually with you, I love my turn based battle systems and usually avoid JRPG's with action based battles. But I made an exception with this game because of Studio Ghibli. So far I've found the system to be ok and a nice mix of both not weighted either way.

Turn based for battling in Japanese RPG's is far and away me favourite battle mode as well, but I am getting used to this one.

I can't resist a game with Studio Ghibli graphical involvement though, so I'd have to put up with the combat either way.

I've no idea who Studio Ghibli is to be honest, I'm not into anime.

They are the Japanese equivalent of Disney, but my humble opinion they are better. They aren't your typical Anime, they concern thier stories with Enviromental issues along with other adult themes. They also have a very distinct art style.

Now just moved into the second world map and I like the way they are broken up. So far so good.

7 hours in. Beautiful.

It's obviously proving popular as the price has now shot up ÂŁ20+ in the UK!!! :ouch:

My reactions/thought processes are usually too slow for "action" RPGs.
However, my favorite JRPG of the last few years would have to be Dragon Quest VIII as the battle pacing and the levelling up was totally pitch perfectly done (in my opinion at least).

As it's the same Level 5 who made this, if someone was to say that this game was as well paced and balanced as DQ8 that would be more than enough for me to buy it (but not at ÂŁ60 though... :grumpy: )

Where has the price risen that high? Thats ridiculous! I'm 16 hours in and still playing gobsmacked. Had a LOT to do this weekend but any spare time has went straight to NNK.
