No assists, a joke?

Isn't ASM where the game actually helps you steer? Wasn't aware RL cars had that...

I'm probably thinking of a different game feature... Was thinking asm was active steering, must be stability.

Depends on the car (IRL). Some systems use a computer in conjunction with ABS and TCS to maintain stability when at the limit, and to some extent control steering...others actually have active steering in addition to the combined ABS and TCS system. (Not to mention the new generation electro-magnetic suspension systems).

It's pretty sophisticated these days.

ABS=1, TCS=1, Skid Recov, everything else off. I find those help me the most. Anything else slows me down. When dragging, everything is off.

Whatever lets an individual enjoy the game.

If your skill set is high then why shackle yourself to a "Golf cart"
If you are not so talented then you can take small steps, small confident steps that when you look back you realise hwo much you have improved.

I feel some people feel the need to quantify a drive or set up is to be transparent.

I'd like to see a big list of cars and what sort of Driver aids come with them.
Now ABS is mandatory - but older cars ABS and Traction control were never fitted (TVRski - I'm looking at you)

I often wonder just what settings would give an authentic feel to the Emmpeefourdashtwelvecee by McLaren. It is the electronics that make the car but where abouts is that with the various driver aids in GT5? Is the reason I find the car to be a souless chassis down to the lack of an cyberdyne system CPU (A room-temperature superconducting artificial neural network with the ability to learn.) powering the active suspension and the trick brake steer and other things.

I guess a trawl of the interweb would reveal what stock items a certain car has in real life.

I don't use driver aids - but I defend any drivers option to use them - How else can Ferrari drivers pass their test after all.

Love this post! This is why I am starting a new league where we drive cars as they are and I try to match the assist to give a 100% authentic feel when driving the specific car. PGTR you should check it out.

The absence of driver aids is not as sophisticated as you might acknowledge. In fact i found it easier with no driver aids.

Including ABS? I mean, it's easy to drive around the circuit, sure, but what about pace? I'm definitely slower without ABS, although I recently discovered that the only drawback to locking up is losing the ability to steer; you slow down just as fast as the ABS guys in a straight line, even with all four wheels locked. Plus you get the added bonus of a smoke screen...

Do people who run with lashings of traction control and Anti Lock brakes get any "Graham Hill Artwork" when they race hard.

Part of the fun is seeing these dirty great lines of rubber where I was too keen into a corner (And locked up a wheel or four) or more often a lauch pad of rubber out of a slow corner that Santa Pod (Insert name of your local drag strip) to shame.

Actually the place I notice it most is on the grid hatchings where my drop the clutch and GO GO GO!! leaves vulcanised scorch marks -

shame you can't flat spot tyres in GPL.

I prefer rooms where aids are allowed. Not much of a fan of boost tho. I race without aids for the challenge. That usually means I'm off the podium more than I'm on it, but everyone drives the way they like it.... as long as it's clean, I don't care what aids you have on.

I don't understand why there is such a argument about the whole driving aid thing. Sure, I use TCS on 5, Driving Line, and SRF, but that does not mean I am a little kid or suck at racing. I am a really clean racer, but when I bother to join a clean racing room, driving aids are usually not allowed, thus causing me to spin out and get accused for driving dirty. If people gave those who use them a chance, they will discover the better ones really quick. Why should those who prefer a different racing set up, that just so happens to be considered cheap by some, then others be forced to be neglected like this?

Since I got my wheel (DFGT) I have turned everything off except ABS:1 and SRF. Don't flame me for using SRF, but I don't spend 24 hours a day on GT5 like some people. I'm working on being able to drive with just ABS at 1, but it's a pain in the ass to keep the car on the road. So far, I can drive my RX-7 TC, the F2007, and most 4wd cars with everything off. Still working on some of my high powered race cars...

Personally, I don't care what assists people use, just don't complain in my rooms that I use SRF or you will be on the recieving end of a size 10 BOOT to the rear.

The GTR, the 430, and 458 are supposed to have VERY advanced computer control technology. I HIGHLY doubt the level of control the real cars have is properly or accurately represented in the game.

I know I will be hung from a tree for this, but I feel it needs to be brought up.

Am I the only one who has a good laugh at all the folks around here who constantly want to remind you how they never use any assists? I'm being serious, do they even know what realism is?

I for one use assists based on which car I am driving.
Am I driving a full blown race car or am I driving a stock production vehicle.

Surely if I go down to my local Lamborghini dealership and ask to drive the Murcielago and how to turn off the assists I will be laughed at. Therefore, you better believe I turn on TCS, ASM, and ABS when driving it in GT5.
Why you may ask? Because the real 🤬 car has a full blown state-of-the-art Electronic Stability Control system.

Furthermore, do those same people understand that some race cars do indeed have a form of traction control and/or other assists?
Traction control was only banned in Formula 1 at the start of the 2008 season. That says something right there. Therefore, guess what? When I drive the F2007, yes I turn on TCS.
I always find them to be hypocrites.. real cars have assist..

For me, I don't use any of those aids (except ABS=1) when doing races in GT, as those aids are simply slowing me down (SRF aside). Recently I'm learning to drive with ABS switched OFF, which is quite a different kind of feeling when it comes to hard braking. Locking up the wheels is so much fun!

Seriously though, I didn't apply full braking pressure for low speed corners like chicanes when I had ABS=1, so the transition from ABS=1 to ABS=OFF isn't too much of a difference, except the setting of brake balance needs to be adjusted to lower values to avoid locking up wheels when braking. :)

So far I can only live without ABS on the F2007. still a pain to drive without it, but doable. the rest of the cars...um...yeah. no thanks.

I recently found it more fun with abs off but brake bias is at 1/1 or 1/0, But that's my preference, when I left brake bias at 5/5 no matter what I did it was lock up or no brakes at all, I had never seen anything in this thread about this so I have decided to share it in a few threads, and it has improved my lap times a little

However, shuffle races are another story, there is so much bump & run that I find it necessary to have SRF, active steering (it really helps fight back) and abs on, but I do admit that I too unintentionally bump & run a lot in shuffle races

ABS 1 is more than just ABS, it help tuning and feels like there's some minor TC with it too. I only use ABS 1 if I'm online and there's a fixed setup where I cannot adjust brake bias. When brake bias is set to 5/5, some cars are way too tail happy under braking so I have to use ABS 1. Maybe with the F1 type cars I'll use ABS1 and some TC, but mostly it's ABS0 and all assists off for me.

Nixim modded brake pedal on G25 helps a LOT, way better and more realistic feeling than regular G25/27 pedals!

The way I see it, in real life cars are pretty expensive and driver assists are there to keep insurance claims to a minimum. In an ideal world everyone would be awesome drivers and cars wouldn't have assists, GT5 is that ideal world, so I don't use assists. I just prefer the challenge, but I'm not the type to look down on others... And I'm a terrible driver when other people are looking, and only a mediocre one when I'm offline (I blame lag entirely), but I still prefer to not use aids.

I always use ABS 1 and Traction Control is usually off unless the car is particularly difficult to control under acceleration.

Only ABS 1 here. I got hang of driving without anything else enabled once, and since then always when I forgot, for example, to disable TCS the cars handling feels quite weird. Also it is a nice challenge to unleash most of Zonda R, FGT, Toyota 7 and other powerful MR's when the rear axle wants to live its own life 👍

If you have wheel, you do not need assists. I use ABS 1. With controller of course there is assists no matter how you put the settings.

It's not a shame if you use driving aids, even the professionals need them sometimes. It also depends on what car you drive. Some cars are so unstable, that it makes it very difficult to handle without the aids. I use always ABS = 1 and never use the remaining aids, if not needed...

Huh? Kinda see what you are trying to say here but it's still generally harder with a controller than with a decent wheel set up. There's not enough "play" in the throttle and brake on a DS3, so I, like many, manage without TCS and other aids (although I do tend to stab at and blip the throttle quite a lot, not ideal) but keep ABS at 1, as to regulate the brake on a DS3 also is pretty tricky, and I end up locking up too much.

I admire DS3 users who turn ABS off though! Are there any HKS controller users out there, and do they use ABS or not? I'm thinking of buying one, but I might just get a DFGT.

TC, especially with high settings messes with the feeling of the car. Whenever I have TC on I seem to be unable to feel where exactly the car is going (DFGT).
SRF is some strange force that has no counterpart in RL.
ABS, I like it. I keep ABS on 1 on all cars.
The problem with TC is that there is only one type of TC in GT5. If they modelled all the different stability systems, it might work better, but this one system just doesn't feel right. Besides that, it slows you down.

Try dosing the gas pedal with the "x" button, don't have a wheel and i do need to put SRF on because otherwise you slip out of each corner without it, playing with a dual shock and a high powered vehicle.
I guess that's also why PD put the option in there.

Screws me over tough as most online players have wheels, and put their rooms no SRF :)

Otherwise TC and ABS at level 1 or 2 max.

No you won't. Ask anyone who takes their cars to the track, they turn off the traction control etc.

Wrong, I have plenty of friends going on the Nurb, on 911, M3, S4, evo's, etc... noooooooooooooon of them turn assist off when they going on tracks, except maybe ASM because it really slows you down. TCS on the other hand, if you have a good car and are an average driver it will help you on most case. Actually on some car, if you turn any aids off and crash, your insurance probably wont cover the accident even if you had a "track insurance". They do turn the sport/race mode on but that doesnt mean that assist are off.

You know there was already people like that in video game since I can remember, I mean there was some frigging maniac who were finishing Resident Evil 1 only with the Knife, for me playing GT5 with no assist is like that. Not needed, quite impressing but at the end totaly useless. If you're having fun doing it good, but at the end it doesnt make you better in my eyes than someone doing the same laps as you with assist.

I use the dual shock controller in the game and, after thirteen years or so of practice, am getting pretty good at it. I don't use any AIDs, not even ABS. Ever. And I will never own a car in reality that does not allow me to permanently disable whatever electronic assists it does have. Nor will I ever posess a vehicle w/ an automatic transmission. These things are nothing but a distraction from what it is that I enjoy about driving.

After all, why have done for you what you can do for yourself?

I will even go so far as to say that if you use these things regularly, you will undoubtedly be a worse driver for it, at the very least when attempting to drive without them. Furthermore, precise throttle and brake modulation are two cornerstones of racing that you will not learn while using TCS/ABS on a regular basis.

...
👍 👍 👍

I personally don't have a problem with others using aids but whenever I host a room I restrict all of them (sometimes I allow ABS but don't use it myself) because if you can't drive a car without them, I doubt you're fast enough for us to have a good race.

In this excellent video, Oliver clearly mentions TC while driving the ZR1 at La Sarthe

ps. TC with the joystick on the DS3 behaves so much differently than it does with the X button. With an Audi R10, set the TC to 3 and drive with the stick and then use the X button. Of course SRF has to be off to get the effect. When using the stick, the power still comes on with a mighty BANG, while with the button, TC actually seems to have the desired effect. Totally counter-intuitive IMO.
