Wasn't so much they refused but couldn't match the specification requested. BMW couldn't match the requested HP either but did manage to make the engine much lighter.

Much lighter than what? BMW exceeded Murray's specifications by ~30 pounds. But they did exceed the power too.

Sorry for not mentioning that Honda turned McLaren down for an engine. I thought that people would realise as it has a BMW engine.

The Honda F1 engines were so dominant in that time, and the road cars revving to 9000RPM!!! I wish Honda chose the decision to chop some cylinders of their F1 engine to make it for the F1, as Honda would be a lot more famous for the NSX and the NSX would be worth a lot more money.

Personally I think it just an underrated Super Car at a bargain price, and they should hurry and make a new one.

Honda NSX (Legacy of the NSX) - Wikipedia
Honda's breakthrough engineering in the NSX was a major contributor to the design of the McLaren F1 as mentioned in an interview with McLaren F1 designer Gordon Murray (translated from original Japanese into English).[21] "The moment I drove the NSX, all the benchmark cars—Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini—I had been using as references in the development of my car vanished from my mind. Of course the car we would create, the McLaren F1, needed to be faster than the NSX, but the NSX's ride quality and handling would become our new design target." The NSX was marketed as the first "Everyday Supercar" thanks in part to its ease of use, quality and reliability. Murray himself remained an NSX owner for 7 years.

As for the McLaren F1 connection, years ago Gordon Murray had a monthly column in Car Magazine and I remember him saying that whilst working on the F1 he both drove a Porsche 911 and an NSX frequently.
He thought the Porsche had enough power but the engine in the wrong place and the NSX being brilliantly balanced but ultimately lacking sufficient power.
But the first designs he made for the F1 date back to the early seventies, including the 3 seat lay out (which was done before by a few Italian design houses in their one-off prototypes in the late sixties and early seventies).
Speaking of Italian prototypes, Ferrari made this 4WD prototype called the 408 back in 1987, somehow it looks familiar doesn't it?

Crazy, I never knew all this stuff about the NSX, Mclaren F1, and Ford GT. I gotta get me an NSX!
Edit: the nsx looks way better than that 408 prototype, when did the first nsx show up? '89 or so?

"Being a fan of Honda engines, I later went to Honda's Tochigi Research Center on two occasions and requested that they consider building for the McLaren F1 a 4.5 litre V10 or V12. I asked, I tried to persuade them, but in the end could not convince them to do it...."

Honda refused.

Regardless, both the NSX and F1 are phenomenal cars, but it makes me wonder how the F1 would be with that Honda shriek.

Someone mentioned wanting the NSX-R GT. as well as the Mugen and Spoon NSXs. I concur. Do want. 👍

Wow I didn't hear about the 408 4WD prototype until now, Considering I'm a Ferrari fan I feel like a fool (even more than usual :sly: ).
This car looks like a sort of crossover between a Lancia Stratos a Ferrari Testa Rossa and yes a '91 NSX.
I love it! ...Of course, it's a Fh rarhi :p

Nice, same color I went with 👍

This car is so perfect that it would be a crime to tune it!

It's a utter beast when tuned up right. Slaughterer of anything with equal PP, sets Lap Records only Rivaled by cars with loads more hp on tap.

Makes you wonder if PD gave it a bit of extra "love", like Honda's press cars...

Sorry mate the Mclaren used a new engine from BMW, im sure it was 2x6 cylinder M3 engines mated together but cannot confirm that bit.

Op yes cracking car, I love all the NSX cars.

Gordon Murray origanally wanted Honda to make an engine for the F1 - but Honda refused to make an engine with specifications requested by Murray so he turned to BMW instead.

EDIT: Oh...beaten to it.

Anyways, on topic - NSX is an amazing car, perfect balance, it just lacks power.

I think they gave the most love to the R35 GTR. It's understandable as Nissan got them to design the digital display (boost, etc) it's then been used in GT since Prologue (boost gauge etc from the HUD.. Not exactly the same, At least it's similar.

im surprised no-one has mentioned how horrid the handling of the NSX was when it first came out, and that spring rates were more or less swapped front-to-rear after a few years...

The car is a blast, the RM version of the 92 aswell

Did anyone try out the new Civic? I was totally surprised about the handling, even though its a FF car it handles quite properly!! I'd say my second surprise after the NSX 91!

yes, the new civic r is amazing... so much that the civic seasonal is the only one i bother with now :)

NSX is one of my favorite car, is a delicious, there is no understeer(sport soft), no oversteer (of course is a dream powerslide :sly::sly::sly:) and is pretty fast(it isn't X2010 but I enjoy this car in the same way).

Standard NSX is Type R for me :)

If you want Super GT then I love the ARTA NSX

Guys, which 100% stock nsx (including tyre) is your fav and why?

I have tried many but haven't fallen in love with any.

Cheers

Most of my experience is with the '02 type R and i didn't warm up to it at first either. Bought adjustable suspension and dialed in the real life allignment values that i found from somewhere in the internets and fell in love with it. :)

Searching for the real life factory suspension settings have actually given many of my cars a second breath of life. Can be a pain to search though and for super cars i would say it's impossible as there isn't any real DIY Ferrari owners for example (they have the money to let other people to do it for them).

i found the acura nsx 04 to be a very fun ride, being just slightly quicker than the 02 nsx-r stock for reasons i dont know. sorry! but its worth a shot if you get your hands on it :)

I would be totally willing to try the real world settings if you are able to point to where you found yours?

Cheers

This seems to have the spring and damper rates. Unfortunately i have no idea how the GT5 damper values relate to real life. Also talks about the allignment but quick scanning only mention max values that the default suspension can be set to, not the actual factory values.

http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Performance/suspension.htm

Here is allignment values. The toe isn't unfortunately in degrees like it is in game. I think i have seen the toe in degrees somewhere but can't find it right now...

http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/TireWheel/alignment.htm

These things can be found for many of the more "mundane" cars. For example i think i have even seen a full RX7 FD manual in pdf format somewhere, so happy hunting. :)

There isn't anything particularly special about the NSX. Anything with a wide, low stance with a long wheel base with less than 300hp and rear wheel drive or AWD will handle brilliantly.

It actually proves to be one of the worst deals in the game as you could buy a Corvette Z06 with 500hp, or a Viper ACR, GTR, or you could spend a little bit more money and get a R8. NSX-R doesn't compete with this crew on any level unless it's a compact track with high complexity and even then there are other cars in the game that still are better bangs for the buck.

Not saying its terrible, but it's definitely over-hyped.

Wrong.
Look at, for example - Lotus Esprit, why isn't it nearly as good and nimble as NSX?
NSX is amazing, and I'm not a fanboy. It just handles beautifully.
