In the past in qualifying, I've always made a point to distance myself as much as possible from the other drivers. This usually allows me a lap or two in completely clean air. I am not concerned that my ability to do the same would be compromised, and I very rarely use even half of the qualifying time provided, but I feel the change devalues a pole position acheivement.

As dsg noted from last nights laps prior to the update, we were around 3 tenths apart. If he was able to capitalise upon the draft in those laps, I would expect dsg would've been cutting times in the low 1'06s with that monster straightaway on GVE/R. This could turn qualifying into a cat and mouse game.

Edit(clicked submit inadvertently): I did read that disabling the collisions during qualifying does eliminate the draft, and while I think that could potentially be a workaround; I do sympathise with Brandon's desires to keep the operations as simple as possible. I really wish these options were individually selectable, instead of codependent.

2nd Edit: Of course, take my input with a grain of salt, as I do not make many events, nor do I compete for points. What is appropriate for the group as a whole may certainly differ from my findings.

Thanks JP for clearing that up for me. Should be interesting while in qualifying.

It definitely opens up the possibility of someone getting lucky and having someone slow in front of them and taking advantage of it or someone deliberately slowing to help someone behind them. It's also kind of a disincentive for everyone to spread out given that if you don't you might luck into a draft boost...lol. Good ole' PD...they make changes that can have positive effects if you're given a choice as to how or where to use them, but they don't give you options as to how to combine and match up the new settings.

If I had a vote, I'd choose to do whatever we feel is the best option concerning the entire race event and experience as opposed to what's technically easier. If that involves taking a chance on forgetting to change a setting then so be it. I'm sure we'll all be diligent enough to remind Brandon or Owens to make the necessary changes, but if not, it's not like we haven't manual gridded before. Do it once and we won't forget again to turn collisions back on.

Well, what happens in real-life racing? Do they turn the draft off during qualifying? :dunce: We all want this to be as life-like as possible, having the draft during practice or qualifying is much closer to the real world. Sure, some people may end up with a slight advantage, but everyone on the track has the ability to gain that advantage so it's not like it's unfair. In my opinion, having the same 2 or 3 guys on pole for every race and winning every race has gotten rather stale, so a situation that could throw a little variety into our starting grids could be a good thing.

EDIT: I understand the point being made, but it's a bit counter-intuitive. This is exactly the kind of thing I was afraid of with this update, something out of the blue that fundamentally changes our way of racing. Personally, I have always wished there was draft during free-run and found it very odd that the so-called "Real Driving Simulator" had the draft disabled at some points.

The biggest thing, I know myself and I know I will forget to change the room settings at some point which will throw everything into chaos and require a restart. This is why I have never turned penalties on during qualifying, I know I'd forget to turn them off and we'd end up with ghosted cars during the race. But again, is "collisions off" even available in free-run or is it only an in-race option? If it's not available in free-run then the whole discussion is moot.

I absolutely agree that the closest we can come to real life conditions; the better. I don't disagree that draft is in play in qualifying or during real races. My concern, really, is that the draft in the game is very different from real life.

Of course, knowing PD, my concerns will not be well founded, since if history is a precedent; we will see at least another update or two shortly to fix issues with this update. In the meantime, I'll just make sure to begin my hotlap a few carlengths behind someone and finish right on their bumper.

I don't mind it on iRacing. But there the draft in a similarly-powered car would be worth a tenth or two at most. Here it would be a second, and that makes it somewhat unrealistic to begin with.
I understand the complication though. Someone will have to exit to the lounge after qualifying to reset the 'collisions on' if we were to run the quali w/o a draft and possibly lose his spot on the grid (one more thing to test - does it still grid you right if you don't go to car settings?). So I'd be willing to give it a try with draft in qualifying. I doubt we'd get people here who'd try to take advantage of this, if we add a line to the rules not to draft during qualifying.

Yes, returning to the lounge for any reason will cause you to lose your time regardless of whether or not you change a setting. So to go back and turn collisions off would mean I'm starting at the back of the grid for every race we do. While I agree that the draft effect is too exaggerated and will give more of an advantage than in the real-world, I can't see myself continuing to run a series where I have to start at the back for every race or have to resort to doing manual gridding. I'm not threatening to abandon the series or anything like that, just saying that this change throws a pretty big wrench into our way of racing. 👎

Is anyone racing tonight? I should be able to join.

^ For sure. I'll have the lounge open by 7:00pm EDT so we can all check out the new features.

Jeff seems to think that only going to car settings resets the grid space.

Usually a drivers grid spot is held as long as a driver doesn't enter car settings menu.

I haven't dont much racing lately to know who's right, so I'd definitely test this tonight.

We can test all of this tonite. I'll be there. Lit and ready to rip.

That used to be the case but it was changed several updates ago. We run no-tuning so people are rarely in the settings screen, yet the always lose their time if they return to the lounge. You can watch this in action, in the timing monitor watch somebody who is on track and when they exit to the lounge you will see that their time still shows on the monitor. However, once they re-enter the track (having gone to the settings screen or not) you will see their sector times and best lap time reset. Once they complete a timed lap their new best time will be displayed. Previously it would hold your times and only change when you set a new best lap, even if you had been to the lounge and back. I think this changed around Spec 2.0 or shortly after.

That changed at 2.06, I believe.

I thought it was around 2.03. Either way, it changed and it's easily confirmable and repeatable.

The start order seems to have been messed up a bit lately. I recall the little sprint we had at Nurburgring 24h that I was started in 2nd, yet I had the pole time, and I might have even been the only driver to complete a full timed lap to register a time.

That said, I volunteer to test dropping into the lounge and adjusting the draft/collision settings this evening in the off chance that is one of the 'undocumented' updates.

Again, from my perspective these are all minor gripes with the game as I don't compete often. In practice, I rarely sit down for more than a few laps at a time.

We didn't follow procedure for the sprint race. If you had gone to the lounge and back at any time you would not have been started on pole until you completed another timed lap that was the best lap of people on the course. It doesn't take much for things to get messed up, but in all 8 of the Silvia Cup Season 1 races things worked without a single problem (minus the one black screen that required a manual grid but that had nothing to do with qualifying procedure). Like I said, it's very easy to mess it up and I understand why so many people say it doesn't work, but when done properly the game will start us in the correct order every time.

Lots of things to test out tonight. I'll be there.

What about running qualifying with no draft, then have a rule saying that the slowest driver has to go back to the lounge to turn the draft back on? That way the starting order wont be affected. I also thought most real life races had single car qualifying, but I also dont watch alot of real life races.

Genius!!!💡

Sometimes, that will put that person starting 1st. Even if it's fastest first. (sometimes) But it could work! :odd:

Since I am no stranger to qualifying last, this will be a risk I am willing to take.

LOL... It may be me as well. And I also will take that risk as well.

Edit: I'll be on later tonight for some practice. Hope to see everyone there.

All the racing I've ever been involved with. One car at a time. Sometimes the bigger tracks could get two on track. Obviously opposite ends.

You sir are awesome. Up beat and no quit in ya. Dare I say. You are one game dog. ;) that is a compliment of the highest order with in my world of dogs.

I just got home, gonna get everything downloaded and should be in the lounge in 15-20. But the update seems to be having a problem downloading, they usually go real fast on my system but all 3 are saying they have several thousand minutes left. So, I'll get there when I get there.

EDIT: All three machines keep erroring out after about ten minutes of trying to download the update, never getting past 0%. . I was able to purchase two of the three DLC cars, it fouled out on the third one. I've reset modem, router and PS3's, Internet is working fine on my laptop, phone and iPad. WTF?? Any advice?

Did you try one at a time? Sorry, probably not too helpful.

Yep, I'm only trying the main one now so if it starts going I can at least get on. I'm on the PSN, can see who's online and such, everything else works. Maybe too many people are trying to download it right now or there is an issue on Sony/PD side.

Could be. I'm personally having issues seeing marcus in the room.

Yeah, I just saw you log off and log back on. So everything else is working on PS3, just not GT5. It's at 1400 minutes remaining, and climbing.

I'm at 1% downloaded!!! It's not much, but its progress, hopefully it takes off soon. Usually only takes 10 or 15 minutes even on the big updates.

EDIT: "An error has occurred"

After two hours of trying to download the update I'm throwing in the towel, try again tomorrow. Let me know your thoughts on how the update has changed things. The draft issue has me concerned and I'm pretty sure it's going to dramatically change the face of things and result in new procedures being needed. It could possibly be a good thing by removing the issue of traffic during qualifying, but it's likely going to result in (some) more work on everyone's end.

Is there a way to delete the partial update that was started and perhaps start over again? I thought that in the past if the PS3 was interrupted during an update it would resume, but I guess that is not correct.
