I agree that the track makes all the difference in the world for the karts. There are a few in the game that are suitable, and I recall seeing those outlined in a recent post in this thread. There is also the option to build kart tracks with the generator, and share it on the ORCA lounge name for everyone to have.

Here's Bdubblub's post, that Marcus Garvey mentioned, about what tracks work well with karts...

I look forward to getting back into racing now that colder weather has set in, can't wait, whatever is decided works for me.

Notice Rome, Deep Forest and Trial Mountain aren't on that list. :dopey:

With the way the last few updates have turned everything on its head, for now I'm really thinking about just doing a 4 week karting club. We'll keep our Tuesday slot but due to low turnout I think we'll do away with Friday and try to do a Saturday slot so our Euro friends can join in for some karting fun. I think a format change is in order, something along the lines of a 5 lapper followed by a reverse-grid 10 lapper. I presume the 125 karts would be the popular choice but I'd probably stick to shorter tracks so we don't end up with gears so tall we can't accelerate. 👍

I like turbo's!

Karting sounds like a blast.

See you guys in 2013.

I take it that means you have zero interest in racing karts?

Well, there goes about 1/6 of our grid. :(

The only track that's really suited to Karts in the game is Autumn Ring and Autumn Ring Mini and even then it's pretty much wide open. The only way to run a real kart series is with custom tracks. I've experimented over the last couple of years making custom tracks here and there and you can make some quite realistic tracks if you put some time into it. I've even made some pretty awesome ovals that are wide open but right on the edge of it. You have to avoid the dumb "corner over a rise" thing that PD has insisted be a part of nearly every track but if you know how to read the topographical part of the maps it really narrows it down.

I'd be up for karts if it was mostly custom tracks but have zero interest in running flat out for an hour and whoever gets the last draft without getting bumped off before hand wins type of racing, which covers the vast majority of GT5 tracks.

^ You make a really good point JP. I don't like racing where it just comes down to who has the last draft. But I also feel that custom tracks come with their own headaches. Maybe karts aren't the best way to go. I haven't come up with anything better though. It sucks that I've finally found renewed interest in the game and the recent updates have really improved the game......but now what?

but now what?

Beaters with fixed tire and PP specs. Good, close racing that isn't karts.

Or bring back the Alfa!

Honestly, that's what I want to do, or something along those lines. The other night I drove 5 different FR cars at 400pp with CS tires around GVE and Nurb GP/D and they were all within .2 seconds of each other (which is within my personal margin of error). So the concept is definitely plausible and could lead to a lot of fun.

Karts would most likely bring in some extra people. I started my kart series expecting to only get five or six people and I nearly had to implement knockout qualifying.

Yeah but it appears they will run off a couple of core members and I don't want to do that. I'm not in love with the karts and really dislike their gearing situation.

I'll still race with you guys pretty much regardless. I really have no major preferences aside from changing from the Silvia. I think we need another car. I will race and enjoy karts if we decide to go that path too.

I say we start a gang and just invade public rooms, show them how to really drive. 👍

Could we all post a list of 5 cars that we think would be fun to run?

Sure. Or groups of cars, or themes, or series recreations, or club ideas. I feel like there's a lot we can do that hasn't been done, just have to find an appealing package.

Yellowbird - Comfort Soft, No ABS, H-Shifter + Clutch :sly:

If karts are going to put core drivers off then we should not run karts. The main thing that makes this series so good is the not the quality of the cars or the track selection but the quality and mutual respect of the drivers. Although track selection and the effort made by the stewards is amazing and we should all be thankful for that. I am not into car racing as much as the rest of you but I think cars made by Lotus, TVR, and Mazda all make cars that would fit well for low-mid hp and good handling. The Alfa is also a great option. I was excited about the idea of karts but I am more in favor of any car that gets the most good drivers on the track, especially the slow ones so I have a chance to get some points.

What about a Vintage FR PP Challenge on Comfort Soft? Just looking at the Standards I see at least 10 cars all made before the mid 80's that could slot in right around the 360pp mark. At this low power I'm sure they're going to be very evenly matched and fun to race.

Just a thought. :nervous:

I like that idea. Anything but Alfas.

I'm not a fan of karts in GT5.
That said, I'm just one guy, and I probably on vacation for a good part of December anyway, no matter what you choose to run. So if there's enough people to run karts - do it, I'll come back in January.

Lamborghini Miura P400 Bertone Prototype CN.0706 : Just because it looks almost as good as the alfa.
IMPREZA Sedan WRX STI 2010 The best, low PP, 4WD, in the game (that can be found in a dealership).
Mazda RX-7 : One of my favorite cars.
Alfa Romeo GIULIA TZ2 carrozzata da ZAGATO CN.AR750106: Don't need to say why.
Ford Mustang Mach 1 :It's actually is very fun to drive, at least before spec 2.09 it was. I will check later tonight.

This would be funny. Someone post up a random room number and we all go in and give 'em a roundhouse kick to the jaw.

That said, no matter what you folks choose I'll still be around driving.

.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. Cause mayhem or just hijack it and show them some serious racing. :sly:

 I've see people "try" to do that in one of my old favorite shuffle/Spec rooms. We had some fast guys in the room so it didn't work.
For fun, I once acted like a noob, asking what's "shuffle" and asking for an oval track because I get lost at grand valley , then the race started :).

I have a name that noone recognises for public rooms. It has been a while since I've used it, though.

Just to be clear, I would love, absolutely love to race karts..on custom tracks, just not on GT5 tracks other than maybe the Autumn Rings.

My 5 ideas would be only 1 idea:

1. 380-420 PP CS/SH with a single make road car, FR or MR, Premium or good quality Standards like the Mugen or Spoon S2000's.

I haven't found an FF or a 4wd yet, in it's spec form, that doesn't understeer like a bulldozer after the update. I just tuned a 370PP Civic for the Parity League, threw 200 kgs of ballast on the back and it still understeered. Before the update it would have been uncontrollable with the settings I used. If you can find one that doesn't then they are in the mix, if not, stick to FR's and MR's.

Vintage cars are fine, but in spec mode many of them have terrible gearing and you run around some tracks only using 2 gears and way off the powerband half the time. I've driven dozens of them extensively in the VCRC and in the Parity League. There are some exceptions like the Nissan 240RS and the good sports/super cars but not many. You can take 10 of them as was suggested, all at the same PP and they could be 2-3 seconds apart. If you pick one car that's fine, but trying to homologate more than 1 is a difficult at best...10 is pretty near impossible.

The best option by far for close, clean racing, is lower pp premium cars. Cornering speeds are lower meaning less chance of error and more time to react. CS ups the skill quotient a bit, SH makes the cars a little more tame and everyone more consistent.

There are many good cars that fit this bill, you only need drive them at the specs you want to use on the tracks you're thinking about using.
