I'm going to mess around in the lounge for a bit.

Edit: 575pp FR race cars on SS tires are rather nice. 👍

Double Edit.

Here's some homework everyone can do over the Thanksgiving break.....well some of us. :sly: Pick a track, set your room for 575pp/FR/SS/tuning prohibited and test 5 or 6 race cars from your garage. Do about 5-8 laps in all of them and see if they turn similar lap times. Tonight I drove the following cars around Nurb GP/D and they were +/- .1 second of each other.

Astra Opel TC
Astra Super TC
M3 GTR Race Car
CLK TC
RX-7 TC

Those 5 cars alone would make up a rather nice racing class but I bet others will be similar too. I tried AWD Audi A4 TC and was 1.25 seconds slower, it could be a handicap car you have to drive if you win too many. :dunce:

Are we testing with a goal in mind? Do you want to see the results? Are these cars you are leaning towards running?

By RX-7 TC do you mean the DLC car or the RX-7 LM that would fit with those cars?

Report back with what cars you tested and the difference in lap times. I just want to see if other people find that cars at the same PP level and drivetrain (and aerodynamics when applicable) turn similar lap times. I'm not necessarily leaning towards those cars specifically, more a PP/drivetrain/tire setting. Also include your opinion on if the cars were fun to drive on those tires or if you think a different compound would be better. At that PP level the cars felt good on SS tires, planted with a bit of oversteer on exit, but they might be better on SM tires.

If you want to make it more quantifiable do your testing at Nurb GP/D and we can compare to the lap times I was running. I was around 1:38.7-1:38.9 in all 5 cars, Marcus did a mid 1:37 in the RX-7.

And it was the DLC RX-7 I was driving but I think the LM car would also fit right in with that group.

I believe you were running 1'32.7-.9, as I recall the RX-7 running 1'31.4xx on a couple of my laps. I did not have the other cars available for testing.

Dude you are rusty...lol. 1:38's are a good lap time at GP/D for a 450PP Street Car on SS tires...lol. I'm sure Marcus is correct and your memory is faulty.:sly:

The RX7 TC punches well above it's weight at most tracks in full race/tune trim and likely Spec trim. It's 3 seconds faster at Spa than a identical PP GT500 car if memory serves.

^ yeah I think Brandon either typographically erred or misrecalled on the exact lap times.

I do remember noting that the RX-7 felt fast, and ate rear tyres. Again, though; I did not have any proper cars to compare with myself.

You're correct, I meant 1:32.xxx. In my hands the RX-7 wasn't faster than the other cars, at least not in 5 laps. It felt quite a bit more loose than the other cars and was a bit of a handful, required a more gentle hand than the German cars.

5-7 laps in each car, all were within a half second 1:30.8-1:31.3

RX-7 felt the least connected and was the most difficult to get the power down. Had to feather the throttle in all the slower corners. Easy to make a mistake especially in the first lap, but on pace.

Two Astras are the same car. Very good control, predictable handling

M3. A little more difficult to control but also slightly faster. The most fun to drive of the bunch for me and the fastest.

CLK. Glued to the track due to much higher downforce, but penalized massively from it. Down 80 HP from the BMW. Slowest of the group and will probably lag well behind at tracks like Fuji, Road Course Indy etc, but will be competitive at Deep Forest, Trial Mountain etc.

These cars being close together has less to do with the drivetrain/PP combo and more to do with the fact that they all race in the same series at the same specs and the RX-7TC appears to be modelled after those same specs. If the Merc didn't have such high downforce it would probably fit right in with the rest of them much better.

Check factory aero. Thinking that TC car is far less then the Real world race cars listed. ;)

While I only drove it for two laps, I agree with that assessment of the car. On a couple of corners I was doin John Force burnouts with the wheel straight on exit. Steer with the throttle and sort of tip-toe around course. The car definitely required a bit of care with inputs, and ate its tyres.

I didn't even look at the settings, and I didn't have the other cars available to compare, but that makes sense. Watching Brandon drive the other cars led me to conclude that the RX-7 gained a bit on the straights, further supporting this. The RX was the only car Brandon tested that I actually had haha.

In this case that was by design. I wanted to see if touring cars at the same restrictions would be competitive against each other, and if other race cars at the same level could compete too. Overall goal would be to have a class of 575pp/FR/SS Race Cars with a multitude of cars to choose from but not have one "cheater" car that is way faster than the others. Each car has slightly different driving characteristics so people could choose one that fits their driving style.

I have spent a lot of time in the RX-7 TC(Both stock and tuned) and after a while I started hating it. It never grew on me. Only got more annoying as it ate more tires. I would think it would beat the M3 for overall pace. But eat tires 3 laps faster.

Astra * TC is a fine car. "Fine" is a good word for it. It's not great but not bad.

M3 GTR Race Car has a great power to grip ratio.

I haven't done may laps in a stock CLK. Can't comment. (Note: all this was pre 2.09)

Mazda, BMW and Astra are all 20/45. Merc was 40/65. They all work together at that track in terms of lap times, the Mazda is just a real handful to drive. And the Merc's downforce will be a hindrance at the bigger tracks. The Mazda may gain some at the bigger tracks due to it's higher straightline speed.

I'd suggest double checking the spec downforce first when grouping cars. With recent updates added downforce is penalized more heavily in a straighline, and with PP limiting, also means a significant power disadvantage. In terms of lap times at the twistier tracks they may be close, but in terms of pace and where they have their speed it may not make for good racing if they are passed constantly in a straightline and trying to make it back in the corners. Unless of course you want that, then don't pay attention to the downforce..lol.

I believe some of the LM cars come with 20/45 downforce. I just picked up the RX7 LM and it's 20/45 and 1080 kgs.

I'll take downforce all day long. :)

If one car is at a disadvantage at a particular track then people can switch to another car. Plenty of cars to choose from, no commitment to a single one, every race would be a different variety. 👍

Did some homework. Ran a few cars for 5 laps around GP/D
Ran'em in this order
Rx8 LM 1:31.4
Rx7 TC 1:30.7
M3 GTR 1:31.3, screwed up chicane on the fast lap, was a tenth up on rx7
Astra S-TC 30.9 lost 3-4 tenths in the final sector twice, d/k if it's me or the car.
CLK TC 31.5

Don't have regular Astra TC.
Since I was possibly rusty, not turning a wheel in a week or two, I did another 5 laps in RX8 LM at the end and whaddayaknow - 30.9.

So I guess RX7 is still the fastest.

RX8 is the loosest, Astra STC feelt the heaviest, but overall those three are pretty close. M3 GTR could be up there too. CLK seems a hair slower.

Good to see others have the same results, so far the evidence is supporting my theory. I did some testing with 525pp AWD TC's on SH tires and saw the same pattern, all the cars I tested were within a couple tenths of each other. Not a big selection at that range though.

Anybody want to do some racing tonight or tomorrow night?

Cool. I'll probably be on around 7:30 or 8pm EST, possibly a little earlier.

Could I join tonight, if I can get some time on my PS3?

Sure, if your connection will let you join. We'll be in the ORCA lounge so send a FR to ORCA_Champ if you haven't already. 👍

Ace and I are in the Champ lounge, come on out for some 575pp Race Cars!

Great fun tonight all, even with the fooling around.
I will definitely be back for more great racing. 👍

Darn mobile issues. lol

That was mega fun. Those cars run together very well, very racy and the sights/sounds were awesome, especially that new Honda (Weider?). On the normal tracks (GVE, Nurb GP/D) it didn't seem like any of the 6-10 cars we tried were at a real advantage or disadvantage. Truly fun.

But, I did best Carr in a "fair" battle, he in the RX-7 TC and I in the BMW GTR Race Car, so my opinion may be a little skewed. :sly: Man, it was FUN though!!

I do believe the new Honda was a bit quicker on the straights, so that is why I stopped using it, because I believe it had an advantage. We should get Marcus to run in a NASCAR to see if that evens out the field.

👍 (no offense Marcus!!)

I might be around again tonight for some more racing if anybody's interested.

Haha I see no offence there, no worries.

I wish I was able to make it back on last night, but I was on a call a bit long. I haven't been able to drive as much as I would like to the past couple of weeks. I did, however, pick up several million on B-spec during that time so I can procure some of these new fangled Touring Cars. I'll try and catch up with you folks again, perhaps this evening if I can find the time.
