Did you know, the first race to ever be held at Nurburgring was actually a motorcycle/sidecar race? Toni Ulmen won the first race held at the massive track on June 18, 1927, where the first car race took place the following day. Naturally, a German born driver won in a German car in that first car race. Also, many know of the all time record driven by Stefan Bellof, but did you know that was the only year Le Mans Prototype cars raced on the current configuration of the Nordschleife? A bypass was built in 1983 during construction of the GP track, which shortened the Nordschleife, giving us the current configuration of the track. Here's some on board footage from Derek Bell in 83 giving you an idea of how it was at that time. For reference, he ran a 6:41 on this lap, so imagine what it would have taken to run 30 SECONDS faster!!
PPS: Please reference Alex's post above about the makeshift start line for this weekend's races. Running a formation lap will take far too long, so our formation 'sector' will comprise of most of the GP circuit, with the race starting immediately after Warsteiner-Kurve, the right hand corner leading on to the back straight before the right kink that leads to the chicane.
