Wow are you serious? So instead of picking ps2 games you even go back to ps1 games? why not be even smarter and show me an atari or nes game and say it's just as easy and cheap to make?

I thought that was your point? Seems not though...

Back to my point, ps3 games have not grown compared to ps2 games. They are either the same size or even smaller than most ps2 games. They have tools for many of the object they use to make levels. In short they have the same size games but only in hd and with a slightly higher polygon count per object/character.

They have "tools" huh? What are these tools exactly and how do they make it easier to do than when they had these "tools" for PS2 games?

Also, "slightly higher" polygon count? Really?

http://beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=43975

Gran Turismo 3, PS2, 2001
Cars - ~2,000-4,000 polygons

Gran Turismo 4, PS2, 2004
Cars - ~2,000-5,000 polygons

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, PS3, 2007
Cars - 200,000 polygons (probably interior + exterior)

Gran Turismo 5
Cars ~500K photomode

Yeah, slightly higher.

Even if the graphics are getting better, so are the tools to make the games. And like I said, the games have not grown in size if we are talking about actual game levels.

Oh it's these magical tools again. Can you tell us more about them please, they sound wonderful.

It's a week and a half before E3 and things are heating up in the battle for the living room. After Microsoft stumbled through its post-reveal interviews, Sony is positioned well headed into E3 in a week and a half.

Sony has answered the question of DRM and online checks, and the response should delight consumers. The funny thing is, we actually had this answer in February shortly after the PlayStation 4 reveal.

Kotaku reported yesterday on a number of things they were expecting to hear from Sony as early as E3. Their update referencing something said by Sony president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida on the issues of DRM and online checks prompted us to check our own reporting, too. Sure enough, Yoshida was definitive on the matter of online checks.

"Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that."

As for the issue of used games, the comments were vague, but still hopeful. A Sony spokesperson offered us this statement,

"We are just now announcing the basic vision and strategy of PS4 and will have more information to share regarding used games later this year. But PlayStation has a long history of keeping its gamers happy and we won't make decisions that damage our relationship with them."

Certainly there is room for more clarity, but with offline gaming locked in and used game lockouts (something that would damage relationships with gamers) less likely, Sony is headed into its fiercest battle yet looking strong.

OK. So this character:

took as long to texture and model as this character?

I must say though that the tools available to developers have made doing, what appears to be more complex in comparison, easier as time has gone on. You now have all sorts of pre made physics engines, lighting engines, motion capture techniques etc.

So it might well be that rendering something from 2001 takes the same amount of time as rendering something in 2008. What has changed though is wages, expectations and basically the world in general so individuals things may take roughly the same amount of time to dev but the amount which has to go into each game has grown tremendously.

Read a lot of things over the last page or so of people saying games take much longer to make nowadays. I don't really believe that.

Sure games may take a bit longer to make today, but games with PS1 graphics today may take a week to make, but back when the tech was new it would have taken pretty much the same about of time as computers and programming and much, much more advanced and adapted today.

Just read the articles posted on the previous page.

Spike TV does NOT have a program listing for the SONY E3 event. Of course they have the other console

Is there event not going to televised??? G4 is out of gaming, so what gives!

That would be 2 free to play games for the PS4 at launch (counting Blacklight: Revolution being free).

Sadly I'm not interested in neither, but it seems that it is an increasing trend of PC games being ported over PS4, if they could .... just could port Planetside 2 and make it cross platform at the same time of being free they would take a good chunk of players who don't have a pc powerful enough for that.

I would buy one if they port planetside2 to PS4, I think SOE has the licence and ... the game itself, but that would probably never happen.

Still, is nice to see that they have base of free games for people to play with the console when it releases, and that's always a good thing when new consoles come out and new titles wait for release.

Free-to-play MMOs on the PS4? Lets not forget the one big screw up--DC Universe Online. Free to play, pay to win. I have a bad feeling these new games might turn out like this.

Not only are they showing the other console's conference they're also giving it 30 minutes of preshow and at least one hour of post show coverage on TV

Sony has to televise this thing

There is the 1/2 hour pre-show, Xbox event, E3 All Access Live (where the might be airing the AONY event, EA event, and then 1/2 hour to cover EVERYTHING else on the floor! And that's it for TV.

We'll be taking my son to the dentist Monday at 1 (eastern), I can tap into my DVR and watch. By time SONY is set to take the stage, we will be on our way home. Hopefully I can keep a constant 4G connection. And we have to stop at New Holland Brewing to full my growler :)

Probably the biggest E3 in 10 years and the TV coverage is anorexic!!!

As far as I can tell, there haven't been many US channels willing to cover E3 so TV coverage has never been steller, it was just easier when G4 was around. Now that its gone, that just leaves Spike and ONLY Spike.

This is probably a stupid question but will there be a live stream of the event on E3's website or something? I won't be home so I won't be able to watch it on TV.

There will be various streams ,don't worry 👍 .I'm sure Jordan will post some himself on the news page or you can catch Robin's E3 thread here as well.

Sony, Gamespot and IGN are all live streaming it. Sure you can find more.

The free to play thing is sometimes handled well, sometimes not. I'd say quite often it's not, actually. I haven't heard bad things about Warframe (but I haven't heard glowing praise, either) and Blacklight: Retribution, while expensive when you want to buy something, is still cheaper than some out there and it's not impossible to earn the credits in-game to unlock things, but if you're the type to constantly change your gear you can even rent stuff. Renting a pre-built gun for a day takes like one or two mediocre rounds' credits to afford.

Also Planetside 2 cross platform with PS4 and PC would never work. I mean you're welcome to try, I'd enjoy all the easy kills, but the DS4 will never be as fast or as accurate as a mouse.

One example of a free to play game that is enjoyable and not pay to win for me would be Dust 514 on the PlayStation 3. I have played that a fair amount and the game does offer advantages to people who put real money into the game, but not so much that you can't stay competitive without paying money. Free to play is great when it's done properly, but I wouldn't want it to take over the majority of the market due to some of the extortionate prices publishers are willing to charge.

I don't think Sony is too worried about the hype a Spike TV slot for the Xbox can potentially create.

Right now, on the internet at least, it seems the legions of 360 folk are either jumping ship to Sony or just going to stick with what they got and save for an overpowered PC.

To lend some weight to this some of my friends from school who all have 360s are saving up for the PS4, and are lukewarm to the One.

Really all Sony has done was talk about the core gaming and added features, then watched Microsoft fall flat on their face while Kaz Hirai more or less rubbed his hands like a diabolical villain would.

Spike is also not that big of a network, as for one nobody really takes them seriously and two all they really show is Star Wars reruns. Most gamers I think are going to get their hype fix off the internet rather than TV.
