What is your controller scheme?

when im using the controller: left analog stick for steering, R2 for throttle and square for brake
 
I'm oldschool :) Been using the standard button configuration (x/square/d-pad) since GT1. And it's hard to teach a dinosaur a new trick :sly: ....

.... although uurrmm, that hks controller really has me wondering...
 
I use a wheel, but when I'm playing 2 player with an occasional friend I let them use the wheel and I use Left Analog Steering, R2 and L2 Throttle.

I really want to get the HKS for those situations.
 
I was surprised to see that less than 33% use both analog sticks. You will be faster if you learn how to drive half throttle in some places or ease into the brakes, then push on them hard. Those of you who are using a hard button for gas or brakes must be relying heavily on ABS and TCS? Your cars will be faster without these aids.

I bought analog stick extenders for $10 on Amazon. These snap on the top of the analog sticks and give them even more throw and you more control to modulate steering inputs, gas and breaks. Took a couple of runs to get used to, but made my driving much more smooth.

Left mushroom (analog stick) = steering for me. Right mushroom = gas/brakes. But I also use the D-pad for "fine-tune" steering, especially once I'm on a straight.

The buttons (X [] etc.) are variable though. At least on my DS3 they are. Also I've met many people online over the years who (somehow) are able to gold licenses and missions using d-pad steering and buttons for gas/brakes.
 
I use both analog sticks and L2 and R2 for shifting gears.

They are and have been since at least the PS2 controllers, there isn't a great deal of travel though between off and on, which doesn't give you as much control. The analogue stick and L/R triggers have much more travel allowing more precise control.
 
Using left analog and x, square, do you recommend disable TCS or something like that?

Still, I know several folks here online who swear by buttons. :shrug: Personally I agree with you though, about the travel aspect.
 
I use the d-pad for steering and the x and square for the throttle and braking.

Respect the classics men!
 
X, square and the D-pad. It's just what I've been used too since the original PS.
 
Why not try something else though? Obviously we all started with the same thing on the PS1 but many of us have moved on, why not give it a go? I can't imagine still trying to control a car with the D-pad.
 
I can't use the PS controller any other way because I don't like how it's laid out or even how it feels.

Because people use what they're most comfortable with. Trying to get an old dog to do new tricks (as someone said before me, lol) just isn't possible.

One day I'm finally going to get a wheel, for instance. But will I be faster with it than I am with my DS3? I highly doubt it. I'll probably race with the wheel, but when it comes to golding licenses and Special Events? Chances are I'm going back to what I know best.

Left stick for steering, right stick for throttle and brake.
Thanks to my handicap, I have to use a kinda awkward button layout anyway.
I use Square and X to shift up and down, I seriously doubt anyone else here drives like this.

X and Square are "analog", so pressure sensitive, not comparable with a PC keyboard.

There's a better alternative to WASD? Most RPG's still use that because it works so well, and typically shift is used to toggle run. There's nothing "lol territory" about any of it.
 
My X and Square are not analog??? Just one step buttons. U.S. vs. other countries? The L2 and R2 seem analog, but not nearly the throw or control of the sticks.
 
I was using the triggers and the thumb stick but I have to join the "none of the above" group :D

I'm just as confused as the both of you gents.... :crazy:
:lol: hard buttons..... EEK!!!!? haha
 
I'm using the old school racer setup:
X and Square for throttle and analog for steering.

Using R2 for throttle just makes the game feel like one of those microsoft racing games lol.
And the right analog dosen't feel right.

I have every one of those peripherals, and haven't changed back to using WASD since my discovery of the G13 analog stick :lol:

Oh and yes, btw, 'WASD' is, INDEED lol territory ;) bahahahaha 👍
 
In GT3 i started off using d-pad with X & square throttle & brake! Then started using L3 with X & Square throttle & brake, hence my PS Thumb! Now I use L3 with R3 throttle & brake cos I needed to for F1 2010 cos with the X button in that, you either had full throttle or no throttle & spun out too much!

You know what's more of "lol territory"? The amount of money that contraption costs. I have the keyboard and it was stupidly overpriced. I can't imagine what the add on bit cost in addition to that. WASD works just fine for a majority of RPG's and FPS's on the PC without having to spend an obcene amount of money on a controller. Same goes for the PS3, the controller works just as well for those who can't afford a wheel, or at least don't even desire one.
 
I use a DS3, steering = Left Stick, Gas = X, Brake = Square. I didn't have a problem getting gold on all of the license tests and special events (aside from the Red Bull Challenge, I am close though).

I guess I have just been doing it so long that I got used to the pressure sensitivity on the buttons. I don't use TCS and only use ABS on 1. I would like to get a wheel eventually, but that's more for the steering aspect than the gas/braking, I don't seem to have a problem feathering the pedals with the controller.

But does anyone hold it the way I do, with my right thumb on [X] and my right pointer curled around to press [SQUARE]?

I fear I may have alienated myself :scared:
