What is your controller scheme?

My X and Square are not analog??? Just one step buttons. U.S. vs. other countries? The L2 and R2 seem analog, but not nearly the throw or control of the sticks.

They are analog unless you use a PS1 pad.
Maybe you are pressing them too hard, but they were analog on the PS2 and they are on the PS3, every button except for Select, Start, R3, L3 and "PS" is analog.

I was surprised to see that less than 33% use both analog sticks. You will be faster if you learn how to drive half throttle in some places or ease into the brakes, then push on them hard. Those of you who are using a hard button for gas or brakes must be relying heavily on ABS and TCS? Your cars will be faster without these aids.

I bought analog stick extenders for $10 on Amazon. These snap on the top of the analog sticks and give them even more throw and you more control to modulate steering inputs, gas and breaks. Took a couple of runs to get used to, but made my driving much more smooth.

100% Agree with all of this. I use the FPS Freaks as well, and make subtle adjustments 100,000 Times easier.

Quick question, do I have to have a certain number of posts before I can vote on a poll?

I use the analogue sticks for steering and throttle/brakes. Have done in all racing games since 2004, noticed a world of difference in going back to GT3 and using the sticks (had used d-pad and X/square previously) and have used it in every game since. Any time I play a game where you have to use L2/R2 for throttle and brakes I don't feel properly balanced on the controller, and I don't feel the same level of control for feeding the throttle and brakes in.

^I've been looking into getting those FPS freak u-shaped things for my left stick, and one of the FPS freak regular thingy for my right stick... Yeah, those look phenomenal!

I actually went through the whole process of doing a 3D scan of one the thumb sticks out of a busted DS3 controller of mine, modeling it up in Solidworks, and designed my own clip-on thumb stick FPD (first person driver) extenders.. Haha. I might still follow through with the idea for ****s and grins, but that'll be for another rainy day :)

[X], [SQUARE], D-Pad.

But does anyone hold it the way I do, with my right thumb on [X] and my right pointer curled around to press [SQUARE]?

I fear I may have alienated myself :scared:

The PS3 controller is a pain to hold properly no matter what configuration you use. It's primarily the exact same size and shape of the first PS1 controller, and apart from the silly boomerang concept that was never made they seem scared to actually change it. It's too small and the analogue stick is in the wrong place. I bet if they moved it to the primary position like it is on the 360 controller more epeople would use it.

Wow, glad to see this take off well. :)

I think the poll results are very interesting... only 5% using the same as me, which I thought would be popular, and about a third using the analog steering and R2/L2 throttle. :D

Very cool.

I just can't fathom still using the d-pad to steer a car. Sure an analog stick isn't anything close to a wheel either but at least you have good variable control with one.

D-pad for life man!:)

I'm absolutely oldskool when it come to controlling GT5.

D-Pad to steer, X for accelerate, [] for brake with L1 and R1 for gears.

It works a treat form me.

But like I said, we all started the same and we've learnt new tricks.

Actually, I never used the D-pad for steering, I was an analog from the get-go. I didn't start gaming until 2001, you see, and my system came with a DS2.

I initially used buttons for gas and brakes, but after my first drive in a Camaro (GT1 days) around Autumn Ring Mini, and sliding out every time I hit the gas, I decided to see if I could change my DS2 controller more like an RC car controller. So I only used buttons for maybe a week or two before switching.

I've gotten so used to the D-Pad that the analog feels awkward to me.
If I need to turn very lightly or sensitively with the pad, I tap it lightly and quickly, which I have gotten used to doing well. If I needed to do that with the analog stick, I'd just need to push it very slightly to the side, but instead my clumsy thumbs shove it to the side, over-steer, over-react, etc. I could probably get used to the stick but just don't have the patience.

I race my best with the wheel (DFGT) except in very touchy cars and rallies. I find I can make better recoveries and fixes with the D-Pad. But I can't even get close to my best wheel times with a controller at a normal race track.

For me, I only use the controller when I'm either:
-Too lazy to want to use the wheel
-Doing endurance races anywhere but at Indy 500
-Winning very easily
Or all of the above. :sly:

I've just ordered the HKS Racing Controller to upgrade from my DS3. (I do have a DFEX from my GT4 days, but I can't be bothered to wire it through my living room every day... plus the wife doesn't like it).

Most users seem to agree it's the best compromise between a wheel and a controller.
Looking forward to receiving it...

i used to be d-pad + x, square...but i've recently made the full transition to both analogs after being a d-pad + right stick guy for the longest time. 👍

Analogue sticks. Left for steering, Right for acceleration/brake.

Am I right in assuming that if I map acceleration and braking to R2/L2 I can brake while holding the engine in high revs? Left foot braking I guess you could call that, sort of.

I stick with the classic way, have ever since I started playin way back when. X gas, square break, left analog steer, R2/L2 for shifting :)

R2 gas
L2 Brake
Left Analog-steer
Right Analog up-up shift
Right Analog down- Shift down

served me well through every major title racing game on ps3 but the best on GT5. Remnds me of my previous steptronic transmission (manual swap now).

I have the same as this but the shift up and shift down inversed. Like a sequential gearbox

Same for me.

None of the above :D

What the heck is this, lol. Looks cool though. That takes some getting use to for sure. I have played GT since GT1 and I have never changed my button configuration. I use D-pad with the Sq and X throttle. I only race in automatic mode if I am playing with the controller.

Dpad, X and Square, this not to old dog isn't to keen on learning any new tricks.

That HKS controller looks cool!!! I want it!!

I use the left analog for turning and the right analog for gas/brake. I can never EVER get used to using triggers for gas/brake. It gets uncomfortable to keep pulling on the trigger for a long amount of time so the right analog just feels better for long GT sessions.

But after seeing that HKS contraption I kind of want to try that out! ... hmmm ok looked at some reviews for it.. they don't seem overly positive.. guess I'll stick w/ my dual analog control scheme. :)

I don't see how anyone can actually like steering with the d-pad... I bet those cars look like a crack addict going through withdrawals...

L Stick Left/Right: Steer
R Stick Back: Reverse
R Stick Left/Right: Look Left/Right
L2: Brake
R2: Gas
ShiftDown: Square
ShiftUp: X
E-Brake: O
L1: Rear View
R1: High/Low Beams
Tuning Toggle: Triangle
Tuning Navigation: D-Pad

Bahahahaha, that was hilarious!!!

Left Analog Steering, Right Analog Throttle for me. It's the way the game came setup, so it's what I got used to.

Question, are the R2 and L2 buttons more accurate/sensitive than the analog stick? Or do people just use those because that's their preference?

Also I never knew the X and Square buttons were pressure sensitive. I gave it a try the other day because of some post I read, and I can't get anywhere near the accuracy as with the analog stick.

The buttons (X [] etc.) are variable though. At least on my DS3 they are. Also I've met many people online over the years who (somehow) are able to gold licenses and missions using d-pad steering and buttons for gas/brakes.

Oldschool. I am one.

It's because you can apply gas/brake at the same time while still having good pressure sensitivity on both. If you use the right stick for gas and brake then you can only do one or the other.

Good to know.

Also I just saw another post that mentioned left-foot braking.

Going to have to give this a try. I'm sure it'll take a while to get used to. But I can see how it'll be beneficial.

left stick to steer
R2 to accelerate
O to brake

came up with it when my hand was in a cast and they were the only button I could use, it kinda stuck since then.

If I'm not using the wheel, Left stick and X, []

Every driving game that has triggers for pedals I change to the above. The face buttons are not on/off, as they are pressure sensitive.
