Because GT5 allows us to choose any car in most events, some of us choose an overpowered car to ensure a win.
However, would you risk taking an underpowered car to a long endurance event for the sake of enjoyment?

For example, I have chosen a Lexus Weds Sport IS350 for the Suzuka 1000km race. After a few laps I was in fourth place and falling behind the leader 2 seconds per lap. And on lap 10 I was about to quit... But kept going. Eventually started to rain and I won the race.

I want to find out how many people are actually racing seriously because they love racing.

Where's the poll?
And the AI are terrible, even if you use a terrible car.
Anyways, for the distance races I used the X1 (that's the last time I drove that thing) and for timed races such as Nurburgring 4 hour, I used an underpowered BMW M3, the Premium one.
For the Tsukuba 9 hours, I wanted to use an Acura NSX RM, but I didn't want to lose, and I needed a definite win. The best car to use would be the X1, but I hate that thing so used my FGT (great car).

I would!
Just like I did in GT4 to get 200 a-spec points.
I see it as it's not how much car you have but how good your driving skills are.

The fun is in the risk. Otherwise you only do events and races to grab money and XP... so play B-Spec that is a better tool.
I really enjoy when a race is hard to beat.

Imagine that the AI was a real good contender how many people wouldnt play because of the game being to hard.
Racing isnt all about winning

I would love them to be much harder!
Formula Gran Turismo is supposed to be hard, but the AI are unbelievable slow considering everyone is in the same car.

It _WAS_ really hard in GT4 - I was really disappointed to see what happened to that event in GT5. :(

Not the 24 hour or 9 hour ones. Anything below that, I'm game. The 1000km of Suzuka will be a tricky one to pick a car for though.

Tip.

Have a varied tire assortment in your pits.
Upgrading your tire during a pit can bring you back from the dead. Lol.

I never got the chance to drive FGT back then, too many laps so I used Bob.
Also my Mum didn't let me do it :)

You had to do a qualifying and the race was really hard - you had to time your pit stops and a single mistake led to losing the race. Damn, I want that in GT5. I fell back to the 12th place 3 times (GF on Skype = bad idea) in Monza in GT5 and still won the race. >_<

I usually don't do the endurance races unless there's a good prize, or I feel the need to get 100%, but if I do I always pick a car I know will win, because I'm not interested in doing them more than once.

You didn't have to do qualifying.
I fell to 12th in Suzuka, in less than 3 laps I have 1st again.
And then at the Nurburgring, the AI kept spinning.

Not the first time around to ensure that I get the gold. But I usually replay the endurance races, so on the second time around, it wouldnt really matter to me as its just for the xp and the enjoyment of driving.

Yeah but that wasn't possible with a controller in GT4. :P

If I too raced more than once I might not care too much but then again, that is time wasted if I did not come in first or at least 2nd. I'd never risk a 24h race though.

If you consider what you get for winning each of the endurance races there's little reason to use an overpowered car to guarantee a 1st place finish.

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

It's kind of a catch-22. People don't want to repeat the race because it's too boring. So, people grab cars that are too fast for the race -- and that's what makes it boring! lol I mean, if the race is close, it's never boring, right?

If I can get the balance right, I like to pick a car that I can pace the fastest AI when I'm driving about 90-95% If I want to pull ahead, I have to buckle down and drive, and the car has the grunt to get it done. Tough balance to find...

I would on subsequent attempts if I've already cleared it. But only the really short ones(< 2 hours) in a car I really enjoy driving. Otherwise, it's just not worth it.

GT5 needs a series of races in between Extreme and Endurance, that lasts anywhere between ~45-90 minutes. Just long enough for pit strategy to come into play. This would be the sweet spot in terms of race length for me.

What I'm trying to say is that considering the effort you have to put into some of the endurance races there are easier ways to get the same payout. If you're into the racing you might as well risk losing to make it more fun.

Who care about winning a Honda HSC (or even an R8 Race Car when you can buy it)?

I did the Grand Valley 300km with a 1 series. Most fun Ive had in the game. up untill the last 10 laps i was about 15 second behind the leader. managed to get in the lead with 5 to go, unfortunately on the last lap my front tires gave out and couldnt control the car. Ended up placing second. I was kind of bummed to have spent I think 3 hours only to lose the win. But I think it wouldnt have been as fun were I 5 laps ahead halfway through.

Yeah definitely.
The R8 race car does cost quite a bit though...

I would other wise it's a boat race. Best part of playing NASCAR Thunder, F1 and Le Mans 24 Hours on PS2 was using pit strategies to get ahead or to come from behind for a late victory.

I would, and have. I took my fully modded Daihatsu Midget to the 300km of Grand Valley and finished 5th. I knew from the start I wouldn't win but it was the best two and a half hours I've spent in a long time. Awesome fun.

This is a strange concept for me because I find I either have a car that will thrash opponents over the coarse of an enduro, or one that stands no chance. I think if I happened to have a car and opponents that were all balanced, yes I would try to duke it out and not mind loosing a close one, but its hard to find that middle ground where you can be competitive with a pack and not fall behind/thunder ahead.

GT4 was much harder than GT5, the Licenses for example.

I still remember that screenshot with the Yello music:nervous:

Replying to the OP's question, it isn't fun driving a way underpowered car, and knowing that you are going to win against the AI anyway. It's much better to save time by driving an equally matched car IMHO.

The "failure" music.
How will you save time on a 4 hour race for example?
Or did you mean races with laps?
