Am I the only one who's having intermittent problems getting on today? And I started a thread where the original post never showed up.

I couldn't log on earlier this morning, and it was very slow to navigate after i finally accessed the website.

The server GTP is on is pretty stressed. And as I said on the GT3 board, the "invisible first post" problem seems to happen when the server times out between when the Topics database gets updated and when the Posts database does.

Giles is the one who put forth that theory. Smart man, that.

Aww shucks... :O

Milefile, the team is working hard to ensure that GTP's customary reliability continues.

this is getting annouying, many times a day this site just don't load for me, therefore i can't log on and chek the new topics. why is the server so stressed lately, it never use to be this bad.

Welcome to our newest member, SuperSaiyan
When I joined here 13 months ago, there were around 6,000 members or less. That's why the server is feeling stressed. And it is, after all, a free service. Sometimes you get substantially more than what you pay for.

They don't use bandwidth if they're not connected. The member information just occupies some hard drive space on the server, which isn't a real problem.

oh, so then should we delete threads that have been dead for over a month? i know it could kill posts counts but this site has been annouyingly slow for the past week and its driving me nutts

This won't work either. It's a loading issue, and clearing 'dead' users or threads will make no difference to performance.

I'm on 56K and I'm not having any problems at all. Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever have in the 11 or so months I've been here. The only time I haven't been able to log on I think was when we were being updated to GTP6 back in December.

If you're on 56k you wouldn't be able to tell now would you? I'm on a T1. I can tell.

Duke, if member count and thread count don't affect server's loading performance as Giles said, and since I've not seen the number of users online increase much when I'm on, why would it matter?

Even though it's a free service it ought to work. Timing out attempt after attempt is no service. I'd pay a small fee to get the site working and I bet a lot of us would.

Oh no, trust me, you can tell no matter what kind of connection you have... I'm on a horribly slow connection, and I can easily tell when the server is slogging. It usually takes me 5-10 seconds to open up a page on GTP... when the server bogs down, it takes several minutes (and up to 15 minutes during one especially bad time).

There are, in the past days at least, 200 or more users online at the same time. I guess it's normal for the servers to be slower and reluctant once in a while.

Gradually the members-on-line has increased but I've seen more on at one time and the server was working really fast. It's just a discrepancy I guess.

yeah,.. I've noticed the lag lately also.

Do you suppose it's the 175+ google bots that are in here 23.5 hours of the day?

There is concern within the forums-webmaster community that spiders are causing significant slowdown on sites like this. A lot of us are researching trying to limit the effects that these spiders are causing on the actual human visitors.

Well i kind of feel better now that others are having difficulty getting on GTP.
I thought it was problems with my end ,but apparently not. i started noticing this about 10 days ago.
The worst time seems to be around 4pm/7pm GMT..

My inbox was filled with email notifications from subscribed threads this morning. Most of them were from yesterday. And there were several from each thread. Not complaining. Just sharing information.

Often, when looking through the Who's Online page, I see guests sending emails, quoting posts, etc. How is that possible?

It's usually because they're in the throes of being told that they can't do it. vB checks user rights when they try to perform an action, rather than when deciding whether to show them the buttons for that action.

"Who's Online" shows that they're in the "Post Reply" page, but the Post Reply page is telling them that they don't have the rights.

I have been getting this problem for the past 3 months now. Another thing I am having problems with is the incredibly long time it takes to upload an attachment.
