my news is not good...i have a v4. ps2 which is notorious for DREs....
took it to the modchipper and well, he said i need a new laser for the modchip to work well... I have an original import Japanese gt4, havnt played for 1 week.
any body else with a v4 ps2 with same prob?

hmm I have a Pal UK PS2 (model no scph-35003) had a mod chip installedabout 2-3 years ago, only thing I remember it's called 'messiah' and you press the reset button twice , and three times when booting for some games (although I never figured tat out and it seems pretty random anyway)

any chance it will work ?

Ok, Im new to the forum but I will tell you the fix if you have an OLD ps2 giving you problems. I have an older model ps2 with a older modchip. I got a copy of the Japanese gt4, which at first didnt work in my ps2, which really pissed me off.(spending 65 bucks on something I cant play) So i was thinking I might have to do a swap, so I picked up a action replay at the store. Just so you know, DONT buy one, it will not let the game boot. So whats the secret, you need a program called DVDloader, the v7all disc to be exact. It burns to a DVD so if you dont have a DVD burner you are SOL. The CDloader disc will not work, it MUST be the DVDloader. Boot the dvd loader disc, and swap with the gt4 disc. Then it will bring up a screen that says perform ea swap, x through it and the game WILL boot. It may take a couple of time to get the game disc to identify with the dvdloader but keep trying it will work. My 2 cents, and good luck!!!

with such a high cost of chipping and the like (some people seem to be paying 50-80 for the chip and then another 80 to have someone install.......) isn't more cost efficient to just import an asian unit?
150 plus shipping one way versus sending it out, buying the chip, paying for the install, and then shipping it back..........

If you have a Japanese ps2, why are you chipping it?

Where in his post does it say he has a Japanese PS2?

And if your sole purpose is to play GT4 or other import originals, then it MAY not be cost effective to get a modchip installed since you can get a used Japanese/Asian PS2 for about the same price. But the majority of people who modify their consoles do so because of the ability to play "backup" games.

That is true, though I have mine because I chipped it myself so it was way cheaper then importing and mine was done 2 years ago when ps2's were not 150 bucks.

hi, i am sorry but ther is too much to go through on this topic and i dont know if this question has been answered but i was wondering if anyone is running GT4 with the slim ps2? im getting mine chipped next wednesday and i cannot wait coz my m8 has got a spare copy of GT4 :D so no ordering for me!! hehe. please please say it works and what chip are you using for it?

hmmm...got my copy today and I am having trouble playing the game :(
my laser isn't 100% and on other games i need to reset a few times and turn the ps2 upside down etc to get them to work
but once started they are fine
I have got as far as the 'Playstation 2' the the 2004 sony startup credits, but then the screen went black
if it got that far does this mean it will work with my modchip and older ps2 or do the problems start after those screen ?

Well, since all games are not released in all regions, having a chip will allow you to play everything. Just getting a Japanese PS2 will allow you to play Japanese games in addition to whatever your home version is. But it won't help if you are in the US and also want to pick up some PAL releases from Europe that neither came to the US or Japan.

All the working V12 (slim PS2) chips support import DVD9 originals so you should be fine. There is not a single V12 chip that doesn't play import DVD9 games. :)

Make sure your installer applies some of the slim PS2 fixes for you though. It can help decrease the chances of it burning (i.e. PS2 dying).

My friend modded my V12 ps2 with a DMS4 Pro. I applied the "Summone" fix...thats what people are calling it. Its soo easy to apply. All you need is a resistor.

Anyway...PS2 doesnt overheat, and everythings working 100% (has been for weeks). Plays Jpn GT4 flawlessly.

If you guys want to know of the fix, email me @

jonathan_rondeau@hotmail.com

I'll send you the pics and instructions.

The Whole " V12 PS2 dies if you apply a modchip" is blown out of proportion. Apply a fix and you're good!

SNIP....

And to clarify my situation yesterday I cleaned my lens (with a cleaning cd-rom) as suggested by Bighap and it loaded the game at first try (which never happened until yesterday :) ). Can't tell for sure that it solved my problem or it was just luck, but will keep the community posted
I want to keep the community posted on this issue.
Actually cleaning my lens didn't work. I still had many trouble to load the game (only loaded 1 out of 10 tries), furthermore while playing sometimes it had problems reading the disc (the little spinning clock becomes red) and I had either to shake my ps2, or open and close the tray. This was sooooo annoying.

Then I got so frustrated that I tried to fix the laser issue as explained on the link posted by BigHap on page 4 of this thread, I adjusted the white cog, and now I am delighted to say that I have no troubles at all. It was not very hard and I had to adjust the cog for more or less 10 ticks.

Godd Luck and playing.

BTW my PS2 is a 30004 serie and my chip is a Titan1

Where are you located?

:( :crying: i am a failure ! i just went and installed a chip for "ewitspaul" and it won't play imports ! it's my first fail ! only my second install.. but my first one worked like a charm ! did all the same things, it was the same chip ! lol. the DUO2SE on a version 4 board. just reporting my escapades. worked on it for 5 hours trying to get it to work to no avail ! grrr ! laterz

its okay yesterdaylight..i will see closely on those solder points when it gets here on saturday or monday and if everythign looks perfect, its not your fault..i will see what i can do. thanks for all the efforts and time consuming thou.

The "modchip not working" thing is only for imports. If you're playing your "native" version of the game, it doesn't matter if you have a modchip.

I'm getting my GT4 Japanese on 23rd, it's the Japanese version translated into english here and there. This copy is just for check but mostly for passing the licenses till PAL kicks in since I'm sick to wait too. I have one of the first PS2 models and with messiah chip it played flawlessly MGS2 Substance which is a DVD9.
