I can see where Joey's coming from, neither Windows 7's native media streaming nor PS3 Media Server could successfully (read: bufferlessly. Which wasn't a word. Until now.) stream anything more than mp3s from my computer. As an example, a 4:10 video, 20MB filesize, 660Kbps total data rate - you'd think there'd be no trouble streaming that over wireless g, which is 54Mbps.

Yeah, right. #tuislogan

It would buffer every five seconds or so - and this is with a 660Kbps file, which is a rather low data rate for video! VidZone works perfectly fine though, so it's not my wifi connection/modem at fault.

It could be the way Windows deals with streaming over Wifi regardless of what software you use. I found when I was using Windows Media Player on my old Desktop to stream it would spend 30 seconds buffering 10 seconds worth of clip. Although it may not be, I don't know much about streaming content.

the file system for the internal drive is different, and definitely not FAT32 or NTFS. It's a proprietary file system from Sony, which may be based on or similar to Linux Ext3.

It could be JFS with 256bit AES encryption:

It's JFS, licenced from IBM, with 256bit DES encrpytion. It has has modifications for database indexing for media and faster XMB loading.

The encrypton locks it so ONLY the PS3 that created the partition can ever read it (to stop people imaging the HDD, and therefore copying the data to another PS3).
Sorry, had a brain fade when I wrote that. Indeed it's AES, you can't do 256biit DES.....
Except the developer documentation says it's JFS...

I use Mediatomb running on a virtual Ubuntu machine with one allocated CPU and 512MB of memory. It works well for me over a homeplug network, both to my PS3 and to an Asus media device I've got.

I don't watch a lot of 720p or better stuff this way but when I did it worked well. I had to play around with the config file to watch all the media types I wanted but a quick web search sorted that out. There's a new version out, but I haven't tried that yet.

In my experience stuttering either comes from network problems (not enough bandwidth or dropped packets) or resource contention on the source machines disk or CPU. As I don't need to do on the fly trans-coding I've never seen much CPU usage and the only time the disk was a problem was when someone kicked off a backup while I was watching a film!

I'm not saying that this is an exhaustive list, just the most common in my experience.

*sigh* I think my PS3 is really having issues now. It's not just the media streaming that's having choppiness issues. I was watching a DVD last night and it became choppy too and was doing the same thing as media I was streaming from my computer. Thinking the DVD was dirty or scratched I tried it in the 360 and a DVD player and it worked fine. I tried another movie in the PS3 too and it did the same thing. Then I tried a Blu-Ray with the same result, I tried the same Blu-Ray in my parents player to make sure it wasn't the disc.

I haven't tried a game yet to see if that is having issue. Honestly the PS3 is acting like my computer when something major like the mother board is about it fail.

Anyone else have an issue like this? I know my PS3 has been getting really hot lately despite me cleaning the dust out of it and keeping it in an open area. I don't know if that's a problem or not. It also sounds like a friggen jet while it's running and it's never done that before. I hope another PS3 isn't about to die, I don't think I could bring myself to buy another one :indiff:.

I had the jetfighter thing couple of months ago and vacuuming it out (once a month or so now) helped a lot, so you should try that (if you didn't already?) Other than that, in my experience you need start worrying if it doesn't get hot anymore, because that means the heat stays inside (aka cpu/ mobo)... if that happens it will be too late most likely. :scared:

Remember when Hideo Kojima and the boys over at Konami stirred up a big fuss with their countdown page for Metal Gear Peacewalker?

Now the boys at Sony are up to the same mischief. If you go to the Japanese Playstation.com site you'll find a countdown timer along with the same kind of thundery background. Calculations have the countdown set to finish June 17th (which ties in with E3 I think).

Here's the link /http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/marusen/

I'll be interested to hear what everyone's take on it is.

I don't know if the text was up when you posted, but for the non-Japanese speakers the first part reads "Beta Test". I don't recognise the kanji, can you PureAwesomeness?

Err, I've tried to download the Gran Turismo 5 E3 trailer from the Australian Playstation Store, only to find the file isn't actually the trailer at all, but instead a small ModNation Racers photo called "ModNation Thumbnail Generic.png". Anyone else come across this?

i have that same problem here too

Hey, this isn't really related to anything, but can someone point me to a Battlefield: Bad Company thread...if one exists.

Well, I spent about 12 hours testing it over the course of 2 days, and I've determined that there isn't actually anything wrong with my PS3.

What a bunch of crap...

Signed up the family and friends for the Sony House Party thing and got selected. I got the second email a few hours ago. I was filling out the second form, and got another email about it in the mean time. Finished filling out the new form and read the new email. Even though I was selected to host a party, I wasn't one of the 1,000 first responders, so I didn't respond in time. Total time between the emails, 13 minutes! 13 minutes and they got in 1,000 to respond. Why do I get the feeling the first email was sent a few days ago?

Bunch of crap. Last time I ever do anything like that again. The boys were excited about it, too.

On the US PSN Store, Godzilla 2000 is free to rent! For a limited time only though.

Too bad I can't download and watch videos with my PS3. I have to deactivate my original PS3 first and activate it for my current one. Too bad my original PS3 suffered from YLOD and is dead.

Now I have to wait for Sony to deactivate it from their end, which is going to take a week.

^^^^same, i bid fairwell to my Family Guy episodes.... and free anything from video stores. I know a shop that fixes ylod, was thinking of getting fixed just to deactivate it.

I'm thinking about buying one of those Talismoon Whisper fans for my Triple. Does anyone know of a dissassembly tutorial for PS3s? I'm quite confident that I could do it myself, but I'd greatly prefer some sort of instructions to follow.

I fix PS3s but I'm not going to put mine together just to deactivate the video content when Sony can do it for me. My PS3, even though it was properly fixed, refuses to stay on for more than 30 minutes of intense online MW2 action, which defeats the purpose.

You should call Sony at 1-800-345-SONY and tell them to deactivate your old PS3. They have to send you an email to verify who you are to get it done, so it takes a while for it to happen.

I can help you with taking your PS3 apart and fixing it. It's not that hard. Only 'specialty' tools you'll need is a #10 Torx Security screwdriver and a quality Phillips #000 precision screwdriver. The rest is Phillips #1 which you should have.

A week? How about a few hours?

My new PS3 is ready to be activated.

I called them after buying somehting and calling them, they said they needed my PS3 to deactivate it. It would still cost me $150. I thought that was the most bogus $@#& I've heard...... I will call it on Monday when i get off work. If your ps3 is on you can deactivate in the settings.
