Interesting, I bet its a single layer disk and not a dual, but you never know.

If this is the case though, what are they going to do with the DVD version? because if its a DL BD disk, then its would have to be very compressed or on nearly 5 DVDs lol. (im thinking 360 version)

Isn't it a PS3 exclusive? why would we need DVD's?

Rumors of MGS4 being on 360 via timed exclusive have been tossed around, but I am pretty sure this nixes that idea.

I Thought that its confirmed that MGS4 will only be a PS3 exclusive. Did some head of SONY say that last year on some gaming show?

Well, from day one Kojima has refused to use any kind of compression for audio and video so he can get the best quality possible. So, we may actually find a huge data game that isn't some massively epic story.

I think that he thought with Blu-Ray he could go the no compression route and get his OCD fix, but he was wrong.

He mentions they are using compression. But I dont recall ever seeing video in MGS that was part of a cut scene.

In addition to early access to the Metal Gear Online April beta test, the publisher also revealed that those who preorder the game will receive a bevy of extras, including a bonus DVD that includes a prologue that recaps the series' intricate and winding story, a 20th anniversary retrospective, character bios, and trailers for Guns of the Patriots.

Well, as other PS3 exclusives have become timed exclusives or gone multiplatform 360 fanboys on sites like Joystiq have laughed off all talk of MGS4 being just PS3. They were silent when this news came out however.

Did he? I may have missed him accepting compression. I am assuming he wants lossless compression. I just know that at one point he was adamant about no compression.

If I recall MGS has never (or rarely) used CGI based video, but more game footage style, which I believe works similar to the GT replays where it renders it based on programmed inputs, making it much smaller than any kind of pre-rendered video file.

I haven't played MGS a lot, just a friend's copy, but plan on playing through 1-3 before delving into 4 so I can bring myself up on the whole storyline. I plan to buy the Essentials Collection when it comes out on the 18th.

Which brings me to my niggle, Ive never played MGS apart from a brief go on 3... I havent got a clue about the story etc... but seeing as its a technically amazing the game it is too hard to ignore just because I dont get the story..

So is it worth buying without any previous knowledge of the series before?

You are in the same place I am. According to a friend yes, but if it follows the same pattern as 2 then it will likely refer to past events. Not knowing them will likely not affect your enjoyment, but you won't know completely what they are talking about.

My plan is to buy the Essential Collection boxed set for PS2 that comes out on March 18th.

It will have:
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2 (expanded edition)
Metal Gear Solid 3 (expanded edition)

Metal Gear Solid 3 also had the first two Metal Gear games on the disc, and I am assuming that it will be the same in the boxed set. So for $29.99(US) you get three, possibly five, games.

As I understand it Metal Gear Solid 2 had a hanger ending and Metal Gear Solid 3 was a prequel of sorts so it did not address the open storyline. So, in reality I guess you can play through MGS1 and MGS2 in order to get up to date for 4.

I figure by the time I play through 1 and 2 I should be able to get a used rate on MGS4 from Gamefly.

Guys, my PS3... Is it dying? :scared:

Today at lunchtime, as usual, I slap CoD4 on for a couple of matches while my lunch is cooking. The game starts normally, I search for a match, finds one in a few secs.
As it's about to start, it gets stuck on the black screen with the "Awaiting connection..." and the dots blinking. I wait patiently and still nothing. Then I notice the sound of the PS3 trying to read the disc every 4 secs or so.
After 6 or 7 minutes, I decide to exit the game, press the PS button and choose to do so. It tells me to wait, and stays like that. After a few minutes, I decide to turn it off. Power button doesn't do it, back button it is.
I restart it and now it doesn't read any disc whatsoever. Nothing. Even the disc icon (CD, DVD, Game...) doesn't appear on the XMB.
Thoughts, suggestions?

Sounds bad, since the latest update my ps3 has had some hanging issues with the web browser which has resulted in me having to hard boot the ps3, and the episode with it loosing all the bluetooth connections. But I've not heard anything like this.
 
hmmm, loosing bluetooth signals, I think I had that when my L3 decided to not work for a while because its never done it again....

I bet these issues arise from a corrupted firmware update....

Beerz, you WILL (most likely) have to send the PS3 in if it is still under warranty, contacting Sony would be your best bet.

Yeah, the last firmware update seems to have come with some bugs. My browser will hang on occasion too, but the more annoying thing is when you exit, even if you just accidentally opened it, it takes a few seconds before you can navigate the XMB again.

In PS3 related news I have a couple of interesting things to note (puts on fanboy cap):

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is using a 16 PS3 cluster, called the PlayStation3 Gravity Grid, to simulate the effects of two black holes colliding.

Odd thing to do when it plays such excellent games. Besides, it already does disease research. I wonder if they let the grid run Folding@Home when they aren't making it map black holes.

Anyway, an interesting quote from the article.
Overall, a single PS3 performs better than the highest-end desktops available and compares to as many as 25 nodes of an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer. And there is still tremendous scope left for extracting more performance through further optimization.

Ok my parents are concerned with the updatability of the Blu-Ray on the PS3 seeing as they just bought one with their new TV. I was wondering if the PS3 will be able to be updated via the internet with the ongoing development of the Blu-Ray player? Or is the updating on the players going to be a hardware issue?

So far my parents like their PS3 and they watch a lot of Blu-Ray movies. So another question would be is it possible to programme the functions on the PS3 to a universal remote? My parents have some Logitech universal remote that they use for everything.

Up until recently the PS3 was the only Blu-Ray player that will be upgradeable via firmware. I believe you have already had minor Blu-Ray firmware updates in the PS3 firmware updates.

I am not sure, but as Blu-Ray 2.0 is supposed to happen by summer I think that the Blu-Ray update will come as part of firmware 2.4 for the PS3. If not then it will happen at the launch of Blu-Ray 2.0.

The other bonus of Blu-Ray 2.0 for PS3 users is online content on Blu-Rays will be usable as well.

And my personal favorite: the PS3 will make a PSP compatible copy of Blu-Ray movies as part of the Blu-Ray 2.0 firmware. Thus, the PSP is the first official portable Blu-Ray player.

All this is in large part why the PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player on the market.

No. Unfortunately, when they put in Bluetooth they dropped all forms of RF.

I am sure a third-party somewhere is working on a USB RF remote that will be universal with everything else. If they aren't they should be. Of course, I have heard the argument (not from experts though) that Bluetooth may be a remote standard in the future.

For my part, I like Bluetooth as a signal because it just works so well. But it is a tad on the expensive side for an everyday technology.

The last firmware update brought the PS3 to Blu-ray Profile 1.1 and it has already been confirmed that it will be able to handle Profile 2.0 via a firmware update. In fact the PS3 is currently the most future proof BR player on the market.

On the subject of the PS3 remote, no its not currently possible to map it to any universal remote, as its bluetooth and no universal remote can handle that currently.

Cool, thanks for the info guys 👍! I'm glad to see that it is indeed future proof, at least more future proof than other players out there. I supposed this is good news for me as well since I use my PS3 primarily as a Blu-Ray player.

I finally got the Bluetooth remote for it and I do like it. It's nice being able to lay in bed and not have to worry about the RF beam hitting something.

One more question, the PS3 does upscale DVD's correct? I've read a few things online that says this buy I never can be so sure.

See, I knew it was out there. Of course, the PS2 remote doesn't have the special colored buttons used by some Blu-Rays. Or the PS button. But if you just want to play and pause movies it would do just fine.

Yes, to 1080p. They updated that back in the summer, I think it was.
 
Oh damn...

Yeah, it's still under warranty (2 years for all products bought new, standard here), I got it Aug 1st '07.
Just found the proof of purchase, I'll phone tomorrow to see how it works for them fixing it.

I hope it's not typical Sony support because every time I have called them for an issue on things it's like pulling teeth. My camera, computer project, and PS2 were all handled in less then an ideal manner. Although Microsoft wasn't much better. I guess they just don't care since they have your money. Hopefully they have improved it, but I doubt it since I called on my camera back in January.

I just mailed my 60 GB PS3, purchased on 12/24/2006, to Sony for repair of a similar problem. I sincerely believe that Firmware Update 2.10 'somehow' caused problems with my system. I could still play PS2 games, mp3 discs, and DVDs without problems, but within hours of updating to 2.10, it would not read PS3 Game Discs, or any Blu-ray Movie Discs.
