PS3 Heat and GT5?

The bottom of my slim used to get VERY hot.

I now have four little blocks of wood under each foot of the console, holding it about an inch above my table. Now it runs far cooler.

i lost 3 consoles so far (all 60 gig), but all died witin 3 months total from launhc. One only lastet 3 days :S 2 was drive errors, and one heat error. I got a 60 gig again, and have it turned on approx 98% of the time, and have been doing so since it launched + approx 3 months, and havent had a problem with this latest one.

I do however consider aquiring a slim, as I know for a fact EBgames will give a good deal on slim+GT5 bundle in my city, andwith my use it only takes 2.5 years to save the cost in electricity alone :| Furthermore, i fear the B-drive in the 60gig will die soon, like most others seems to do these days.

One thing im not in anyway concerned about, is overheating as long as its handled correctly - lots of open space, no dust, and not in the oven on 3000 degrees..

This has been on my mind too, my PS3 (fat) used to be in a cabinet and went a bit crazy after some (not a lot) time running so it now sits vertically in the open behind my TV and generally behaves. I downloaded the split second demo and while running that it again goes a bit crazy, I assume that game is pushing the hardware a bit but with GT5 probably pushing the hardware more than any other game I do have some concerns, particularly since I think I'll probably be having longer sessions with GT5 than any other game I have owned.

My PS3 is running strong as new.
My PS2 is running strong as new.
My PS1 is running strong as new. How?
Do not block it from air, and don't fill that air with smoke 👍

hopefully PD is smart enough this time around and includes an in-race save option so that you could play for a few hours and save the game and turn it off which will negate this problem altogether

I have an early 60gb, it sits 3 feet above the ground on a wire rack, with full air circulation all the way around. About 6 months ago, the fan started running more than normal, so I took it apart during the Feb 28 'incident' to pull the battery and reset the clock. I was able to thoroughly clean the internals, and it made a huge difference. The fan rarely runs now.

Dust, heat, smoke-all the enemy. If you can take your PS3 apart and clean it, do it. There are plenty of online/youtube tutorials out there. Well worth the time and effort, and you'll be ready for all the endurance racing I hope GT5 will bring. Someday. Maybe.

My PS3 Slim has been on since January 1st, right now temperatures inside the house exceed 34 C, no problems so far...

My 360 on the other hand...

I think the only thing that makes the PS3 really hot are games that have a lot of explosions, smokes, and maybe some other stuff I don't know. But hey? I'm no computer genius. I just notice it in MGS 4 and Uncharted 2. I once had a problem with MGS4 playing for 5 or so hours in Act 1 and 2, then suddenly it freezes then shuts down for some reason and can't turn it on, and it was really hot! I waited for an hour and it works, but since then I only use my PS3 for 1 or 2 hours. I though I'm going to buy a new PS3, but hey it survived!

Hmmm, excellent idea mate. I'm going to have to do this cause the fans will kick on if I pay COD for more than 3 or 4 hours and it didn't used to do that from what I recall

My launch 60gb lasted a bit over two years of normal use before getting YLOD heat issues. Went in for repair 4 times before they said "We can't fix this," and the warranty company gave me a check for what I paid for it ($439!).
I bought a 120 gb slim, and hope heat won't be an issue.

Same with me, I've never had a Sony video game system fail. Just be smart with them. Leaving an electronic device running non-stop isn't ideal for its hardware, but I've left my PS2 running for days at a time (a few times with GT4 for endurance races, and once with FF12 when I had levelled up very high and couldn't find a save point in a dungeon).

I've also worked with a hardware developer on a project before and he recommended turning off computers when they weren't being used. He said that despite the belief that it doesn't matter if they're left on or not, he does say that longevity of computers does has a relationship with the amount time their left idling. :)

Same situation here I had "red light of dead"... After 4 unsucsesful repair I buy Slim... My 60 gb model is launch model

A lot of the original PS3 are dying about now due to heat issues and poorly designed cooling, along with dust buildup etc. The infamous YLOD
The smaller chips in the later PS3 run much cooler

This.

I've had three (3) YLOD's on my launch model 60gig.

1st was in November '09, less than 12 hours before my birthday. I was playing Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising at the time. GF put her controller down to grab a snack, and I jacked up the sensitivity to max and spun around in circles while I was waiting. I didn't think about it at the time, but a game with a 32km draw distance, along with it spinning 360 degrees every quarter second, puts a huge stress on the system. After a few minutes, the system was toast! My fault, I know.

Pulled it apart, did the heat-gun fix, then played MW2 just fine for umpteen hours a day, for two months. Stopped playing game in January due to a new job, started playing again in Feb. Got my second YLOD in mid-Feb, while playing Soul Caliber 4.

Fixed that again, and let it sit for a few weeks. Picked it back up in March, played FF13, and 14 hours into the game over a weekend (all at once), I got another YLOD.

For those that don't know, the main YLOD issue is that the system gets so hot, it melts the solder on the board. This then causes errors that the system reads, and spits out a YLOD. Looking it up, the board has to be hitting at least 180C in order for this to be happening.

I had this huge plan to put everything in a custom enclosure, and put it all into a small fish tank with mineral oil and a small external rad/pump/etc. Still may do that for GT5, but right now I've found a temporary fix in the form of a nice sized fan constantly pointed at it.

Also, before anyone jumps down my throat, my PS3 has ALWAYS been taken care of, outside of seeing a stupid number of hours on or playing games. No dust, it's own wooden slat shelf in a room that doesn't get above 65F in the dead of Summer, etc. I was unemployed for about a year, with a large sum of money in the bank. This allowed me to..well..relax a little.

So yeah, it happens, but usually only to older models, especially launch model 60gigs.

you tell me im on my forth 60 gig but im covered by insurance so it get them replaced free :) But i found out about the temperature thing about a year ago so my ps3 has its only special area now hence my latest 60 gig has lasted 2 years

I have ran my 60GB PS3 through GT4 endurance races and it has been working good since then. I make sure that I clean it once a while with a can of air. I don't really have to worry right now because I don't play it anymore. I'm just waiting for GT5 and I'm just playing the old GT's to pass the time.

Though my PS3 is not a launch model since I waited almost a year after the ps3 was released(before they got rid of the the 60GB and put in the first model of the 80GB).

I now have four little blocks of wood under each foot of the console, holding it about an inch above my table. Now it runs far cooler.

I had my ps3 slim flat on the entertainment unit and after playing GT5 for about 10mins, the video would flicker. Then a few mins later the signal to my receiver will drop out (goes on and off) I can still press the PS button to exit the game..

Then as an experiment, I stuck a few bluray covers below to raise it and so far it stopped the flickering!

GT games have pushed the PS hardware to their limits since GT3 or 4, but if it breaks and it is covered by sony you are in luck, but i dont see the console failing but running for 25 hours as long as it is in has good airflow

I doubt it will cause any problems at all.. The PS3 has plenty cooling and the hottest running part i assume is the Cell cpu, which is available in rack servers that will be under heavy load and probably never turned off for years on end.

My 250GB Slim isn't even a year old. The only slight annoyance with it is that its case makes cracking noises, even when I just turn it on. It's the cheap plastic expanding. Never had another console do that though.. -_-

hahahahahaah

I had no idea what that was initially when I first got my slim. I started thinking only mine was doing this, but then I realised it was the plastic heating up...

still manages to scare me sometimes for how loud it is :dopey:

I have my ps3 vertically placed, with nothing near the intake and exhaust vents...so far the fan hasn't gone on the highest level if I recall. I remember playing Uncharted and maybe GTA would trigger the highest fan settings sometimes.

I do miss the tranquillity of the Playstation 1, where I could leave it on for days and not worry!

Sony gave us a real piece of art...
So, chill out, it will be no problem at all.
My PS3 Slim was running like... I don't know, 3 consecutive days (for real) and had no issues in any sense.

A big hug.

Eager Snake.

I'm still running the original 40g model.. I've left it on overnight to DL a movie, played the next day for a long time on Battlefield without a break.. haven't had a problem at all. Usually when the highest fan setting kicks in I shut it down after 30-45 minutes and do something else.. but considering I bought this console that is now, what 4-5 years old?, off ebay that's pretty damn good.

How many 360's have you seen last 2 years, let alone 5...

I also have the 40gig version (of course the hard drive isn't the same now) but it has seen extensive use. I remember watching movies, downloading, Netflix, Folding @ Home, and heavy gaming. It was on 24/7 for a long time. Fan never even went into super turbo mode either. Since GT5 came out it has also been running almost nonstop.

Just keep your PS3 well vented and dust free.

My PS3 overheats everytime i run the SLS AMG at the Ring... i know, powerful combination, but COMMON PD!!!!!

^ This. If it's locked up on a shelf in a small entertainment center then yeh it's going to overheat. Mine is on a laptop cooler with next to nothing around it. :)

Funny thing is I have had my PS3 for two and half years (maybe three and half years?). Either way I took it apart two months ago to clean it and there was virtually no dust inside of it. I guess it's just all in how you take care of your systems. My first gen PS2 is still going strong. I never even had to send it in for the Disc Read Error fiasco. My original NES is still going strong also.

And again I have never heard my PS3's fans. It runs so quiet. If you keep your system in a spot where it stays ventilated and make sure it doesn't get a lot of dust in it then it will last forever.

Does anyone have flickering issue (HDMI keeps trying to handshake) with GT5? I have the PS3 Slim and I am not sure if it is my HDMI cable (BJC Belden Series-F2) or my Denon 4310 Receiver. Previously I thought it was heat that was causing the issue so I raised the PS3 but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. I have tried other 1080p games like FF13 and GT5P, all behaving well! It just seems like GT5 doesn't like my PS3. I have the the latest 1.03 update and firmware 3.55. Next thing I'm going to try is swap the Slim with the fat PS3 I got when GT5P came out.

I get that hdmi drop-out issue also.

Used to be very occasionally but since last "forced firmware upgrade" it glitchesa lot more (very much so for about 5 mins after booting and then every 20 mins or so - usually in the middle of a corner:tdown:).

Must be an issue with the PS3 itself - all my other hdmi kit runs perfecly with my TV (via one hdmi/dvi connector).

I run a powered hdmi switch and thought that might be the issue but it won't work at all on a direct connection (work that out!)
