Why aren't they concentrating all their resources on the PS4? I'm pretty sure we don't need a 3rd incarnation of the PS3.

Because PS3 will still be selling and making them a profit for years to come and the people who haven't bought one aren't likely to but aPS4 at release. There are a lot of games to sell to people who haven't bought a PS3 yet.

But on the basis what's wrong with the current slim PS3? They could have saved the money of designing and producing the super slim PS3 and drop the price of the current one, either now or upon PS4 release date.

It still seems like a waste of money to me.

I really don't see the point in this. The 12gb is more expensive than the normal 180 slim.

I can imagine when it actually goes into stores it'll be cheaper. When the PS3 Slim was announced it was more expensive than when it went into stores.

What was wrong with the fatty model? Components get smaller and cheaper to produce. they did the same with PS2 and it didn't seth to affect the PS3.

The fatty model? Well not enough memory, very loud fans and other components, it was pretty cumbersome, it froze a lot, touch screen buttons were annoying and pointless. The current one, more than enough memory, it's slim enough, very quiet, efficient.

Why do we need a new one when there isn't anything wrong with the current model to warrant the expense of designing a slimmer version? It just seems like they made the new one for no particular reason.

And if someone doesn't have a PS3 already and wants to buy one? Well if I was in their position what does the new model offer me that the current one doesn't? Apart from it being a little bit smaller, when in fact the size was never even an issue.

When I had a fatty before the slim it had enough memory, it was a bit noisy, but OK, it was fairly large, but that was fine, it didn't freeze, touchscreen buttons a nice feature... The slim made it seem old, and likely the super-slim will do the same to the slim...

My point is why do we need a new console? What defining feature about it will persuade me to ditch my current console and buy that one? And what defining feature will persuade those who don't have a PS3 already to fork out more money to get the super-slim over the current slim?

It's just a PS3 exactly like the one sat in my room right now but with 250 extra, and also un-needed GBs and it has slightly smaller parts and is housed in a slightly in a smaller casing. I just don't see the point.

Does it matter? You don't have to buy one...

Looks like a modified PS2 slim... Ugly and probably more pricy too.

Well the fact that the PS2 slim still sells, doesn't seem like a waste to me.

Yes, as the slim was a genuine improvement over the original.

And anyway, we've already got the PS3 slim soooo:

More efficient and less power hungry than the current slim model is a reason some will choose to purchase this newer model.

@Pagey: The reason they are pushing out another slim is because for one, it's even cheaper for them to produce than the previous slim model, and two, try to get as many people to jump on the Playstation brand before the PS4 comes around.

There are still a lot of people who haven't purchased a PS3 yet, and stores will find it helpful to sell hardware if Sony can provide them with a new model. Rumor mill believes that the new system will be on sale just in time of the holiday sales period so with Sony bleeding money, they need any new product to be out there and sell really well.

I get why they have done it to push sales, but I agree with pagey. If, as you say Sony are in a financial slump (to say the least) then why out the cost of developing a new console?

Plus I still have a munter ps3. Its fine. A slim would be ideal, more memory, quieter etc. But a SLIMMMEERRRR version? Not needed.

So, they stop production of the current slim and start production of a cheaper, smaller version and it costs them more? :odd:

You have to spend money to make money. It's that simple. They are remodeling an existing console to be cheaper and probably more efficient, not developing a new console. There probably isn't a whole lot of research and development costs behind it but in the long run it will make them more money than the existing slim or they wouldn't make it.

I know I don't, I'm just surprised as it seems like a pointless exercise, and like I said a waste of money.

Well, if this is real, it would seem their marketing team doesn't think it is a waste of money. So yeah.

People will buy this, don't worry.

New ps3 is cheaper in produce so this is one of the reasons. Next one is because many gamers still have older versions like Fat PS3, so those guys will definitely buy new better version. Another reason is because sony is going a little retro with this one. Slim ps2 had open hatch for DVD not slide one like FAT and beautiful ps2. So this time sony is going backwards for those fans.

You would be surprise how new design can attract new customers and old once. Many gamers who had FAT ps3 change it to slim because one of those reasons I've mentioned already.

I've been looking to replace my current 80GB fatty recently.

Maybe I'll hold off for information on this to be true.
