Ok what makes me not belive this is the different versions of it. "it will be available in 2 versions a 12gb and a 500gb" who in their right mind would buy a 12gb ps3 regardless if you can change it out for a bigger one. I mean when the ps3 first came out the lowest one was 40gb. I don't believe it till I see it.

People buy 4 GB XBOXes...

No point in that either... Ok think about this. GT5 would take half of your ps3 just in patches then fill it up with the game install. I mean it's not clicking.

Honestly I call bull crap on this leak

Price is very attractive and disc space is not that important if you will use Disc versions games.

Read my post above then you will understand why. And there are more games that require a lot of space for patches and installs

I don't. The 4gb XBOX is an attractive starter bundle for anyone new to current gen consoles, and the 12gb slim is too. It's aimed at more casual gamers who play the arcade games and have a very small collection.

With the XBOX, you can also buy a 250gb Microsoft hard drive that slots in, if you do need more space. I can imagine Sony would do this too.

Yes i get your point. Just saying even with a small collection some games like GT5 and another one on the top of my head the game Mag just the updates are more than 12gb each there are more just i can't think of any at the moment. I just don't understand how that is a good thing to do.

Sony has done the right thing with making a very easy way to upgrade our hard drives in the ps3. I really hope they don't do what. Microsoft has done with the XBOXs. But i would like to be able to take my hard drive out and put it into another ps3 without having to format it. I still don't understand Sony's point to have that be like that.

The super slim 12 GB PS3 could be using internal memory chip like most smartphone or android phones uses, which will allow another HDD to be installed to supplement or it may be an entry level SSD drive.

Yeah i just hope that they are not following in Microsoft's footsteps. I love how easy and cheaper it is to swap hard drives in the current PS3s

No one really cares what you think so if sony releases new ps3 that means they now better than anybody. There is many reasons why sony decided to do so, one of which is PS4 wont come out in stores before 2020 in my opinion. And because players demands it doesn't mean sony actually will work already and make every one happy. There is still a lot of power in this not old machinery so it's better idea to release new model than next gen. Especially when it's not ready yet. And 12gb ps3 has a lot of sens nowadays. Price is awesome.

These companies all carry out extensive market research, if they really are releasing a 12GB PS3 it's because they know there is a market for it. Same as Microsoft and Nintendo have done.

I'm sure there is a language barrier that is partly to blame, but seriously?

I'm also somewhat hesitant to assume that simply because Sony did their market research that this will be as much of a shot in the arm to PS3 sales as people in this thread are suggesting, since this is the same company who famously was once arrogant enough to claim that people should work harder at their jobs so they could afford the PS3 when it first came out. Without knowing how much the thing will cost or if there will be compromises with it compared to the current model (or even if Microsoft or Nintendo will do anything in response), "it will be a success because Sony knows what they are doing so of course it will be" doesn't seem like an argument to me.

I don't know if you meant "no one really cares what you think" in a rude way to me. Because it sure looks like that. But if you weren't sorry for calling you out on it because certain things in writing look totally different than they would be said. But if you did mean it that way what i have to say there's nothing wrong with what I said. But anyway... I wasn't giving the system a thumb down or anything i was just saying from mine and it's about half and half on my friends I have mentioned this to. What i was pointing out is on the 12gb version you would have to narrow your selection of games down and make sure you don't go over the hard drive space which quite a few games do that in updates and patches and partial installs from day one.

Also I wasn't saying one system is better than the other. When i mentioned I hope Sony doesn't follow in Microsoft's footsteps... I meant the marketing for selling extra hard drives like the 4gb XBOX has. Unless Sony let's us take them out and put them into another ps3 without having to format it.

You seem to forget that many people buy consoles with no ability or desire to connect it to an internet connection. Those people won't be downloading patches, DLC or demos so what do they need a big HDD for?

So, they stop production of the current slim and start production of a cheaper, smaller version and it costs them more? :odd:

Why don't they add the backwards compatibility back in if it's getting cheaper to make?

One big the reasons given for dropping it was to keep the costs down.
I suppose they would lose PSN sales then though eh.

I know that's what i was saying hahaha

It was?

You certainly didn't seem too sure there.

Yeah my phone went crazy and deleted what i wrote after that part. I restarted my phone and went to the store sorry i forgot to repost so after I got back. But yes for that select market who do not have a way or just don't play online would be good for them.

I would bet money that 12Gb is a typo. Its just wayyyyyy too small the user experience would suffer, theres too many games that download their data to the system, it would be filled up so quickly. Also the price discrepancy is only $100. Its gotta be 120gb.

Well that was exactly i want to wrote but didn't have right idea. So I'm sorry if anyone felt offended.

Without knowledge of what people wants i don't think sony would make new ps3. There is another reason.

Their firmware is very often hacked, so games could be downloaded then installed and played on hacked firmwares. Sony does not charges us for on line playing and firmware protection some times is not enough among many reasons this is why sony make new hardware. Also to protect their market from piracy.

Flash Memory 12GB - 229 Euros - October 12

This intrigued me, looks like my guess was correct, flash memory. I wonder how PS3's OS handle this, should this have been covered by the 4.25 update recently ? Without HDD, and up to the customer to upgrade, would it be the best choice for 1st time owner ? Will it be faster to load, if installing game or patched to the flash memory ?

Currently and in the past, flash memory is used to hold OS's data on the PS3 ( old PS3-256MB and new gen -16MB)

PS3 Flash memory
The PS3 has 256 megabytes of flash memory to store firmware, using two NAND 128MB Samsung flash chips. The installed firmware data is interleaved between the two flash chips for speed. To prevent errors, Error Correcting Code Checksum (ECC) is added/used on the data in the PS3 flash chips. In newer PS3, a single 16MB Spansion flash chip is used.

NAND Flash 128MB 30ns 3.3V 48-pin Samsung K9F1G08U0A-PIB0 256MB total (2 chips) for older model PS3 flash memory

Flash 16MB 80ns 3V 56-pin, 100nm Spansion S29GL128N90TFIR2 16MB total (1 chip) for newer model PS3 flash memory

Flash 16MB 80ns 3V 56-pin, 100nm Samsung K8Q2815UQB-P14B 16MB total (1 chip) for CECHL PS3 flash memory

Because of the smaller flash chips in later versions, newer firmware versions allow for the firmware data to be partially stored on the hard drive (instead of totally inside the flash), making the flash purely responsible for holding data involved in the critical booting up process. This allows for cheaper flash chips, while using the hard drive for later bootup stages

If the flash PS3 model have a new HDD or SSD installed, how would the OS's arrange the data installed ? Do we have the option to choose where to install or rearrange our game/patch ? Obviously having the 12GB flash PS3 upgraded with a beefy SSD drive would be the best PS3 with the fastest possible loading times.

There are many questions for this little flash model, and I am really interested in buying it after everything clears up.

What on earth were they thinking with that corrugated top? I know it must be cheap, but surely it can only be a few pence more to do something flatter and nice looking.

I made a meme regarding this:

So, wait. 3 models at once now? I'm curious about the 12GB one, because from what I've read you are extremely limited by your ability to upgrade the HDD in it.

The thing is also uglier than I had guessed it would be, like someone chopped parts up between a Fat and Slim and only sorta made it so they went together.

From what I've seen on news sites, you have to buy an official Sony internal 250GB HDD, or some sort of external solution that you also apparently have to buy from Sony:

The new console model will be available as soon as this month. The price of the Super Slim remains the same as existing models, but available HDD space is increased. A 500GB model replaces the existing 320 GB in the same price bracket, with a 250GB model doing the same for the 160GB. A 12GB black model with optional mount for an external SSD, or upgradable with 250GB Sony HDD, is apparently coming only to Europe.

Linky.

I've also seen a couple reports that all you have to buy is the hard drive caddy and you can use whatever drive you want internally, but the "external SSD or Official Sony HDD" reports seem to be more prevalent.

So the best option with super slim is to buy the usual 250GB, upgrade the HDD to SSD, and use the original HDD for other use or as external HDD.

So I got a email from Sony about this new super slim, I expected some great price reduction (Australian price) and from what I see.... it's pretty much the same price..
