PS3 to lose (yet another feature)

Yep, just crippled my system. I'm waiting for the next update to disable the ability to watch Blu-Ray films. That way you get the choice to update and still be able to play games online or you don't and you can play games offline and watch BD movies.

Bad, bad move, Sony.

Not surprising, should have guessed it would happen since the Slim doesn't support it.

Not even sure why they included it in the first place.

Can someone explain why the removal of otherOS support is such a big deal? The PS3 is meant to be a games console - if you want to fiddle about in Linux, do it on your computer. The PS3 is for playing games and watching BD movies, not for doing a spot of programming with gcc or surfing the internet with Firefox for Linux... besides, how many people bought a fat PS3 primarily for the otherOS capability instead of the gaming side of things?

You guys seem to be making this out to be the end of the world.

Its removing a feature entirely because somebody finally cracked their precious Hypervisor. It was finally going to be usable at full speed. Do you know what a PC with a cell processor performs like?

OK, WTH... I have a Slim, but when I went to play some MW2 MP I was prompted to download the 3.21 update before I could sign into PSN - why should I have to download an update that doesn't affect me whatsoever because of the model of PS3 I have?! Surely Sony has a way of identifying the console model number - and thus "fatness" - during the update process :S

Hypervisor? Is that some limitation they put in so the processor doesnt run at full speed?

Nope guy's it's not an aprils fool Im updating mines right now and i just remebered about the feature. Its true.

Basically, the hypervisor is what runs the OSes on the PS3 (everything, including the XMB runs on a virtualized system so actual resources are shielded), so if you have access to it, you have access to everything.

Word to the wise - I've heard that a few people have lost all their data from the HDD's... I don't know any full details though - I'm doing a backup before I update.

:( (Just think of it as a sad smiley) that sucks... I have Linux on my PS3 and won't be updating until I hear it's safe. Maybe the data loss is affecting units with Linux partitions on their hard drives.

Highly possible... I have no other details than a post on another forum saying they lost their entire HDD.

Did he lose everything or just the stuff from his OtherOS partition?
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/28/ps3-firmware-v3-21-update/

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

It sounds like it should just be clearing the OtherOS partition, but I wouldn't be surprised if they caused it to reformat the entire drive after removing the extra partition.

I always suggest a HDD backup before updating anyway, just in case.

And for the record: I think it is a crap move on Sony's part. It isn't as bad as having Homeland Security raid homes in order to get one mod chip, but it seems a bit harsh to remove a feature that was considered a selling point by some because you can't patch your security hole. It would be like Microsoft removing Internet Explorer instead of patching it every week.

I have no further info - but yes - I assumed that it would just blat the "Other" partition.

Although - it doesn't say that - it actually says it becomes inaccessible.

I can see both sides of the argument - if this is the way into the PS3 to crack it - then I can understand it... it's like everything though - it's always the people that break the rules that ruin it for the others who didn't.

EDIT : Backup completed - Upgrade done - lots of text and warnings etc and advice if you have a linux partition - and you are able to bail on the update half way through if you don't want to bin your linux.

To be honest, if it stops the kind of viral hacks that Xbox Live users have to suffer in online multiplayer then I don't care if they force us to padlock the entire thing to a post.

Same here. I had a huge warning about backing up to avoid losing data if currently using OtherOS. It popped up and required action by me to continue, in a way no previous update has done.

Yeah - I did the upgrade last night - or so I thought - turned it on this morning - and it was halfway through - with all the warnings!!

Looks like they are trying to ensure nobody loses anything... I didn't read all of it - but it goes into good detail about what will happen when you agree to install it.

This is a total pain, I had linux installed with the intention of learning a bit about the Cell, now I have to back up my HDD, format it and re-install the PS3 partition just to get the latest update and not lose the HDD space while losing linux in the process.

Errm, you know you can log in psn without updating, as described in geohot's blog and various other sites?
Guess not and probably it's too late now...

Guys, I need some help. I have a 160GB HDD on my CECHA01 PS3, and have Linux installed on a 10GB partition. I have some questions:

  • If I update, what will happen with my 10GB partition? Will it become dead space unaccessible from my PS3 partition?
  • If so, what do I need to do? I've upgraded hard drives once, but I've never removed partitions from my hard drive.

Thanks in advance.

Oh ffs

Nobody forced you to download the system update. Sony even said this on the update description before you install it...

It crippled your system and you have only yourself to blame. As for the rest, grow up. If some stupid little twit didn't try to hack the system, there would be no need for this. You want to vent your anger at somebody, vent it at that dead ****. An enormous amount of time and technology went in to making the system unhackable. If it were me, the idiot would already be facing jail time for hacking the Iphone.

Nobody forced you to download the system update.
That's right but in the near future you loose the ability to play new games.
I bought my PS3 for both: Games and Linux. Now I'll have to decide what to drop. :grumpy:

Hacking is legal. Systems getting hacked is nothing new and to expect.
Sony's reaction is unique.👎

Sony challenged the hackers by dropping OtherOS from the slim PS3.

Hacking is legal.

Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, in the UK at least.

(1) A person is guilty of an offence if—
(a)
he causes a computer to perform any function with intent to secure access to any program or data held in any computer.

In simple terms, you need some sort of authorisation to change things legally, the key word being any which implies up to and including your own systems. Wherever you are I highly doubt that hacking is legal, by passing the PS3 security systems as described is likely one such form of illegal access to some sort of data inside the PS3 (it's a computer to after all). I mean they're called security systems for a reason, and I doubt that thats because you're allowed to get around them legally.

You need to do a system Restore to delete the partition.

Um, actually I was given the choice to get to play my games online or lose the feature. That's getting forced into it.

Being forced into it is not being given a choice. You can't be given a choice and be forced into doing one of those things at the same time or you have no choice. What would be correct is to say you were forced into it as you wished to continue playing online games, and that would be perfectly correct and I'm 100% sure that's what you mean, but I thought I'd clear this point up as soon as anyway. It would also be correct to say you were forced into losing something, and I wouldn't be happy either if I wanted both especially after having both.

So people without internet cannot play new games? I somehow doubt that, but... make.believe. :p

That's the funny thing, now hackers have actually a reason to hack where they before just where stuck playing around with the otherOS...

He didn't try... he still can do it... nobody forced you? yeah, right. If you don't want to play online...
