How do you know which race car is in each category?

I know there is LeMans and the LM cars are in it, but then I hear there is a group C. So what are the race car categories and how do you tell which ones go there?

From what I gather, it's just knowledge, and looking at which cars share characteristics with others, for example 'oh, this GT-R race car has 493bhp, so does this NSX race car, they must both be Super GT', etc.

For some races go to 'requirements' and it'll tell you what cars are eligible, therefore, you can see what cars in the game are in that class / specification i.e. DTM.

However, this is not the same for all race series i.e. the Le Mans (Sarthe) race anything can enter.

There are so many different classes for Le Mans over the years, too many for me to remember, but Group C was the top class of sportscar / Le Mans race car in the late 80's and very early 90's, but can't remember exactly when.

Just to make matters even more confusing, some cars even had a class of their own, I think, but not sure, either the Bentley or maybe one of the Audi's had this.

The description of the car will usually give specific details about what class or events / races the car raced in, in real life.

Sometimes it's in the name, like with the Toyota GT1 and Nissan R390GT1, these were raced in the GT1 class, but other times it's more confusing. Like the Maclaren F1 GTR, I think this was also used as a GT1 car, but not sure as I think in real life this car was raced in different series, and built to different specifications, I'm not sure what the GT5 version is built to, I'm sure the description will advise.

The Noamd Diablo is another example, it raced in the JGTC but I think it's described (in it's name on GT5) as a GT1 car, whereas in real life JGTC (or Super GT as it's also been known as) cars are built to different specifications to GT1 cars. I'm doing a B spec endurance race at the moment, so can't check my garage and decriptions to confirm.

Also, some series only have one class of car i.e. DTM whereas other series such as the JGTC has two classes, GT500 and the GT300.

Sometimes the name of a race series changes but the cars stay a similiar specification, it can get a bit confusing at times.

So basically...go play the game and don't try figuring this out? =p

Not really, you can figure it out, but because I can't check my garage and see the cars, names and descriptions it's difficult to be precise about all race cars in all series that are in the game. GT5 covers the past 20 years and most of the major race series from around the world, during that time there has been many changes to class regulations, cars and what the series / classes have been called.

Generally, it's not too bad if you just want a certain type of car i.e. Le Mans 'top' spec, DTM or JGTC, but if you're going to catergorize all cars into classes and look at the differences, it might take a little time.

Most of the top spec Le Mans cars have certain similarities, for example weight, most of the cars would be between 850-950kgs and have 700-950bhp.

The lower spec cars would be heavier, around 1100kgs and have less power, but like I say, there are so many variations, being general isn't easy, where's being specific is alot easier i.e. possible Group C cars I can think of are the Nissans R89 / R92's, Toyota Minolta, Jaguar XJR '88, Sauber C9, Peugeot 905.

Group C was abolished sometime in the early 90's and replaced with (I think, but not sure) LMP class, like the Audi R8 '05, Pescarolo (there's two, can't remember which one :(). Then the Bentley came along with similiar specs but actually raced in a different class. Also, the name for the class in which these cars raced in varied between Le Mans, America and Japan, but the cars were very similiar specifications.

But, like I say, I can't check my garage at the moment, so I'm guessing a bit, sorry.

EDIT:
Just finished my B spec endurance, had a quick look in the garage and the description. An example:

Nomad Diablo GT1 - this started out as a JGTC car, but was then changed to a GT1 specification car. Check the description of each car, this will make it alot easier to understand the car and what class it was in, plus the description will be alot more accurate than me!
