Regarding SOPA and GT planet

I don't know the exact details of SOPA, but that's crazy.
It's just more hassle for everyone. I really hope this doesn't actually happen.

SOPA would use the same technology that China and NK are using currently. Which essentially means, that if the government wanted to block a site, they could without a very good reason.

I'm not sure a GTP blackout would be a good idea, considering all the international users. With Wikipedia, there are different sections for different languages. Obviously the English version is most popular, but it is used mostly by native English speakers, most of those American. SOPA and PIPA are American issues (though similar things have happened elsewhere) and therefore Wiki will be shutting down the English site. But here, you're just bound to piss off a bunch of international users who have no say in American legislation.

Perhaps an official statement to the the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Federal government, or joining a coalition with other notable websites and technology companies.

Which is obstructive for the British, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders and so on. Although I completely see the point what with Wikipedia being an American website.

I'm in Germany so any website I go on is usually the German version and not the English version, so are there any other big name websites that have taken part?

Wikipedia hasn't exactly been shut down. If you need/want to use wiki today you can either disable javascript, or use the mobile version.

I think a Simple Statement that Says GTplanet are against SOPA is suffice to send the message .

I'm sorry, but this whole thing is just silly.
If that's true, you must not really understand the consequences and implications of this legislation. The web would be a fundamentally different place if this is passed.

Pretty much every website the hosts any user-based content would be censored or taken offline if they could not prove the legitimacy of the content. The legislation assumes all websites are guilty, and therefore they must police their own content constantly or risk being shut down because one lone user uploaded something illegal. Almost any link leading anywhere would have to be removed. The administrative costs of policing content could put many small internet companies out of business, having to use all their money to root through content instead of running the actual site. GTPlanet might be an example of that.

The fact is that "piracy" is a bad thing, but it is everywhere, and in many cases it is there because the content maker wants it there. Many content makers understand that their business is boosted by word-of-mouth on the internet, and they support that activity.

One thing the media industry doesn't understand is that if all these big-name websites had to shut down, they would no longer be able to advertise on that website. They would be stuck with radio commercials and billboards. That's 1950s stuff right there.

I just don't like paying for EVERYTHING...we're already paying for internet, so yeah..

Just found out the Cyanide and Happiness guys are doing the blackout to. No new comic :(. Oh well hopefully this stupid bill doesn't pass.

I love the new banner. :D:tup:

This SOPA thing annoys me too, if my opinion may be shared. :) Not much for me to say about it, it's quite a silly thing.

I'm not normally one to reduce something down to an easily-digestible sound bite, even though SOPA really shouldn't need much explaining as to why it's a very bad thing for every single person on the internet, but I found this on my G+ and felt it should be shared:

It's almost all I've heard today from various outlets and just on the street. Here's hoping the right people are actually listening.

A strong show of support, Jordan 👍

It's nice to see gtplanet supporting the fight against these bills. I know I'm in the UK but these bills will effect every person that uses the new not just people using it for nefarious reasons. When I joined gtplanet some years ago I was happy to find a place that strictly prohibited the discussion of how to commit piracy and it's survived and thrives.

Bills like this just put too much power in the wrong people's hands and also the bills are so poorly written/constructed/created that allot of the uses who post images to illustrate what they recently purchased could find themselves foul of SOPA.
