The Church of England threaten to sue Sony over RFOM

Sorry but this is just bonkers, particularly as I can clearly think of two programs in which either aliens (Dr Who) or gun related violence (Spooks) occurred inside a church and the COE did nothing about it at all (strangely both programmes made by the BBC).

Still they do say that any publicity is good publicity, and I doubt this will do PS3 and RFOM sales in the UK any harm at all (quite the opposite - any hint of a ban normally has the British public out on a spending spree).

Scaff (and no heading off to Manchester cathedral all you RFOM players)

Completely agree.
What irks me most is the assumption made that videogames with guns makes people shoot other people in real life. It really, really p*****s me off!
To be honest I doubt anyone who's played the game has ever thought "Hey, this is in a Church..great..I think I'll go to my nearest place of worship and massacre everyone with a gun that shoots through walls!".
Honestly this is a knee-jerk reaction by a reactionery group, i.e the CoE.
Reading between the lines you can see that the CoE are just using it for propaganda and media interest in their ineffectual anti-guns programmes. Their just media whores now.

The BBC news report on it was a little funny IMO with its"Mass Murder inside the cathedral" statement. Who knew they had a soft side for those poor Leapers

Yeah I got a very pro church vibe from the BBC report, they made it sound alot worse than it actually is, clearly all the people moaning about it and the people reporting have not actually played the damn game...

Mass murder, um maybe but THEY ARE ALIENS!!!!!! you are trying to save humanity in the game so I don't get how they got the it will encourage killing PEOPLE into it!

If anything its teaching human solidarity and courage in the face of evil to protect the human race, So I assume the church doesn't share these views, if aliens came to earth they would say let them kill us all! Not that this game need to teach anything because ITS ENTERTAINMENT!

Apart from the big point THAT ITS NOT REAL! :dunce: Gosh are they blind! There are hundreds more games that are more worthy of moaning about that don't include fake monsters!

No wonder the church is so unpopular, they push away young people by making stupid deals of things like this, they just stir everything up and then parents get wrong information and they start overreacting and it all goes to pot...

Basically if you stupid enough to think that of all games in real then you should be locked up, guess that means the whole Church committee then!

Sony don't give into this rubbish!

Robin

Why didn't/don't they moan about all the other 'violent' computer games which involve churches or places of worship? Don't most games like R:FM have places like that in?

Any WW2 game has them in, Tomb Raider does, Hitman, GTA series, etc.

If anyone jumps on this bandwagon it could bottom out.

OK great news.

The RFOM update is now available to download, as is Map Pack 1 (£2.99 in the UK).

I've downloaded the update and worldwide servers are here, as is access to the XMB friends list, and dy that I mean direct in-game access to the XMB friends list (the rest of the XMB is not accessible but it is a start).

The Map Pack can be downloaded from the store or from in-game (I'm doing it from in-game at the moment which does not support background downloading - not sure if a store download supports it), can't wait to see what the new maps play like.

I have to say that I am happy at the price, as £2.99 is a more than reasonable price in my opinion.

Combine this with picking up Rainbow Six : Vegas today and I'm in for a busy weekend.

So has anyone else downloaded the new maps yet?

I'm seriously considering it, but I'm still a little worried if its worth the $8.99 price tag. If no one else has downloaded them, or if they're just small levels, then is it really worth it?!

So whats everyones opinions on them? Descriptions of the levels would be great also.

The new levels are AWESOME. They are really huge. The first snow map is awesome, it's HUUUUGE and has TONS of space for snipers. Basically it's possible, if you have a good group of players, to just snipe a ton of people around the map and kill some folks from a distance. It's just a REALLY wide open map with tons of space to run, gun, hide, and snipe. Very awesome.

The other map, Camborne I think? Is really awesome. It's got an outdoor area up top, and an underground area down below. The sewers (down below) are awesome, very very close combat and fast paced. you're turning corners and getting into firefights ever few seconds, and being on your toes is essential. Up top, things are more varied, with area's that are much more open and free to roam / hide / kill. That said, keeping a fair balance between both area's is key to getting a lot of kills / points. If you hide out in one area for too long, you run the risk of not getting enough kills, or getting killed too much.

I have not downloaded anything on my PS3 yet . . . still have not thought of a PSN-ID. :banghead:

But I have been playing the single player a little on the game and I have to say the grunt guys completely suck arse. The first one that tried to chew and beat on me caused me to shake the controller as hard as I possibly could. Then a little later, while my friend was playing, he had one sneak up on him out of nowhere during the middle of a fairly large firefight with a bunch of hybrids and both of us just about shat ourselves.

^ This one. ^

Oh yeah, it freaked the both of us out. My friend had come over because he asked me if I wanted to play Frequency. So we played that for a while and after that, I told him he needed to play RFoM for a while. So he played it and while he was doing so, I watched him play it. He is a little farther along in the game because well, I have not played it much. But he was in a pretty good size firefight between himself and a bunch of Hybrids. While he was running around killing Hybrids, out of absolutely nowhere a Grunt pops onto the screen and start chewing and beating on him. Did not have a clue he was there until he popped on the screen and it just surprised the crap out of both of us. It did not help that he was still in a firefight and getting pelted by Bullseye fire. Somehow he managed to survive the whole entanglement and keep on trucking.

How's the multiplayer in Resistance? Any dead time when you just can't get a crowd big enough to play a game? I understand it's 40 people on a field at once so I wonder what the minimum required for play would be.

So what do you guys think of the game play?
And Vash, good luck picking a name. :ouch:

Btw, there's already a new map pack out?
Can you still play on the originals included with the game at purchase?

I have only played the multiplayer a little bit over at a friend's house on his account and there seemed to be plenty of games going on when I was playing and this was at 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning, granted it was a Friday or Saturday night though. I was in a game that was a 40 man game and there was constantly 25-30 people in the game, even with people coming and leaving.

I have no idea what I am going to decide with on a name . . . just do not have a clue. :scared:

Well worth the price tag, its two environments with about 4 differing maps per environment, so well worth the price and they are excellently designed as well.

Kent, the longest I have had to wait for a match is about 20 seconds, as while the maps may go up to 40 players, they can also be set-up for 8, 16, 24 , 32 or 40 players (all slightly differing maps) so plenty of scope.

Also with the servers now being world-wide plenty of people are always on-lin eto have a good fight with (oh and just using the original maos is still fine as plenty of matches still happen on those).

👍

Hmm, then they should play some Rainbow 6 Vegas.. There's a good gunfight in a mexican chruch.......

Does that mean the servers won't go down everyday at 8:10am EST?

I get off work at 7am, and by the time I get a chance to sit down and play, its already 8am, which means I would get about 10-20 mins of RFOM in before the servers would go down (for anywhere from 20-60 minutes  ) which is sort of the reason I stopped playing it online and moved on to Motorstorm online again.

I know the servers got a bit iffy (actually an understatement) just after the global servers went live, but that all seems sorted no (certainly I've not had a problem getting on).

Come on in and watch me get my face shot off by the whole world.

I'll be there, delivering double barrel shots to the throat just as soon as the map pack finishes its download! :D

As in Boom Headshot face shot off?

Well, I downloaded the maps, and spent the afternoon playing them. Well worth the $10 I paid, especially with the amazing rain/snow effects that came with both of them.

I was actually blown away at first. I was expecting 2 add-on maps thrown together with areas that didn't quite look right and awkward looking terrans and corners, but instead I got story mode quality and an excellently thought out and built set of maps. Two thumbs up from me. 👍 👍

I suppose it's hindsight now but I rented this and frankly, I didn't get what all the hype was and I still don't after playing the full game. It certainly doesn't seem next gen to me. It's more fustrating to play then other games too. I guess partly because I'm expecting to do "cover behind something" move like in RSV or GoW.

You have to understand this is a completely different game than RSV and GoW. In those games, you have to constantly get behind cover and pop out and shoot.

Resistance is much more fast-paced and you have to constantly keep moving to keep yourself a live. Also, you have to quickly put down the bad guys, otherwise they will quickly put you down. Saying that, you still have to pop in and out of cover at times, though no where near the extent of RSV or GoW. At first, I was a little lost in RFoM because of the different game mechanics; but after playing it for a while, I came to like it a lot once I made the adjustment to the different style of game play.

I can't do that because I go for realism. Not being able to cover is a limitation of the game in my book because the developers couldn't put that feature in for whatever reason. Making it sound like a fast paced game seems like a weak argument because RSV's Terrorist Hunt for example is VERY fast paced and you can die without even knowing it.

I Looked them up...

Resistance - November 14, 2006
Gears Of War - November 7, 2006
Rainbow Six Vegas - November 12, 2006 / June 26, 2007

Realism? How real is it that in both RSV and GoW, your health manages to regenerate? I do not think those soldiers in RSV have some kind of new magical drug or abilities that cause them to regain their health and stamina. Remember RSV is only set slightly into the future. Whatever they have in the game, then I want some, as it would be awesome to be able to almost instantly heal like that. Neither of the game explain the healing abilities, at least in Resistance it is because the main character (I cannot think of his name at the moment) is partly chimera, at least this is the explanation I have gotten from what I have gathered from what little I have played the game.

It seems like a very lame excuse to not enjoy a very good game, not having a cover system.

Resistance was never intended to be a game in which cover was incorporated, unlike RSV or GoW, in which their entire gameplay was built around it. Resistance was meant to be a game in which a severe emphasis is placed on running and gunning.

If you do not like that kind of FPS, then you probably should not have played Resistance, as the developers never meant for it to have cover. Had they wanted to incorporate a cover system into the game, then they would have done so. I personally have enjoyed all three of these games. All of them have their high and low points, but all three are immensely enjoyable games. I would recommend them to just about anyone after explaining to them the differences in the three.

Good points^^^

Halo 2 seems to do great with no cover system, not that I or anyone cares but Unreal Tournament would be ruined it had a cover system. Fast pace FPSs can't work well with a cover system, usually if someone thinks you are taking cover a rocket blast will take care of you. If I'm wrong show me a fast pace fps with a working cover system. Cover systems usually require you to go into 3rd person.

A Resistance cover system would not be good with the likes of the Auger and Bullseye...
