Rolling or Standing starts....

I prefer standing starts...I'd love to have a le mans start...
Maybe a good idea for online playing would be that the participants can vote on it or the lobby creator decides about it like the track, number of laps etc...

I prefer standing starts also, but I also wouldn't mind rolling starts if all the cars were bunched together like in real rolling starts, not the ones in GT5. :/

I personally don't mind either but prefer grid starts especially if I can qualify first. I think the lack of grid starts had to do with logistics of polygon pushing power and the general power of the PS3. Rendering 16+ cars and pushing the physics of those cars all hitting the loud peddle at the same time will seriously bog down the PS3.

I suspect PD use rolling starts to elevate this pressure and keep the frame rate up. Usin LOD's (Level Of Detail) isn't new in games and PD use it to the max. They even turn off the 3D wheel centres in GT5P when not seen fully to eek out as much as they can from the system.

Will we see grid starts come back to GT5? I would hope so but I doubt it.

The reason we haven't really seen any proper grid starts is simple - they are struggling from a technical perspective. All those cars on screen at once, all that detail, all that damage potential, all going into the first corner at once. Rolling starts are good for something like NASCAR, but for a basic track race like on Suzuka...totally ruins the experience. Here's hoping they get the dynamic LOD sorted out so they can manage proper grid starts.

Well to be honest I would much rather have say 12 cars on track and be able to have proper grid starts, or even proper rollings starts. 16 is nice, but if they can't make the race fair then your always going to have to tear your way through a 16 car field in 3 or 5 laps.

It would depend on the track. In one hand I love grid starts on some tracks like Fuji, Suzuka, and High Speed Ring, but would hate it on the oval tracks like Daytona and Test Track (stupid PSP). They're putting both I think so it's really you're decision.

I totally agree Matti, 16 is nice but 12 is plenty. It's still 50% more than Forza 3 so the fanboys can do their boasting, but to be honest, if the AI is decent enough and the cars evenly matched, you can still have good close racing with just 8.

Anyhoo, time will tell.

Sorry, missed this bit of the post... Based on what evidence? You really think that we will have a choice of grid or rolling start before you start each race?

grid and rolling starts have been a part of PC sims for the past 5+ years. They should be able to do it for a PS3 game.

I don't think this is true at all. The PS3 has far and away enough power to handle a full grid of cars on screen at once.

So why haven't we seen any grid starts? There has to be a reason beyond, "because we haven't, not because they can't..."

That is the question, although just because we haven't seen them yet doesn't mean they won't be in the game.

You do realize that all the stuff we saw are from the demos that are time limited, what's the purpose of grid start when you can't finish the race?
And relax, as I said they're just demos, rolling starts will probably be for Nascar and 24h races, grid for everything else...
As for technical side, we already saw 16 premium cars running close to each other into the corners pretty easily...

Sounds like I'm not the one who needs to do the relaxing!

Since when is it not possible to finish a race from a grid start? 2 laps or 2 minutes is 2 laps or 2 minutes however you slice it. You mean finish a race in a decent position? If so, that's a different thing entirely. Still, it only takes a few seconds to get up to race speed from a standing start, so you really think that has a detrimental effect on the ability to place highly in such a short demo? If anything, for any given starting position you stand a better chance of finishing in a higher place with a standing start than you do a rolling start.

As for the images you showed, those are very nice replays where all of the processing is dedicated to displaying those cars. No AI or anything like that to process.

I'm not being awkward about it, nor am I stressed about it. I just find it strange that no matter the track, all we have seen are rolling starts despite the fan base routinely asking to see more grid starts. If Tokyo Route 246 can have 16 cars on the starting grid at once, all battling for the first corner with no slowdown at all, let's see it!

As long as the gt 5 prologue rolling starts are replaced by double file starts, I won't mind to do them. I still hope we get grid starts as well

-> This applies on both grid and rolling starts:

^ Remember back in GT1 that qualifying 1st resulted an extra Cr1,000 in your pocket? THATS the one I miss. :(

Qualifying is definitely sorely missed, being forced to start last every time was getting immensely irritating.

I cant see any reason why races with standard cars should have anything but grid starts with a full field and effects.

Yep, that would help for sure. However, if the rolling starts are anything like they are currently, they will be unrealistic and just plain boring to watch. If you could take control of your car BEFORE the line and time your attack so that you were as close as possible to the car in front as you pass the line, that would be great.

I don't mind sitting in a grid of cars waiting for the green light, but having to just sit and watch my car drive itself to the line before I can take control is, or at least should be, totally unnecessary.

I don't like the rolling starts in GT5P. If it were like a real race where as soon as the flag drops, every car can accelerate, I would love it.

fwiw, my 2p's worth...

i think that if the game is supposed to be simulating a particular real-life race
or type of race, it should use whatever start style the real event uses

other than that, just make it an option like gtl or gtr2 on pc

I like a nice variety of both. I could handle rolling starts for lower class cars and grid starts for higher horsepower vehicles or any combination of the above.

Yeah that would be pretty sweet to have a flag person. But we definitely need all cars to start at the same time.

Again Grid starts are already in GT5. They just don't have it on in these various time limited demos for obvious reasons, plus some tracks aren't suited for grid starts

7 and 16 car grids respectively
