Rolling or Standing starts....

I would be happy with grid starts and double file rolling starts where everyone hits the gas at the same time. I hate starting in the back of the field and by the time I get to accelerate, the guy in 1st is already around the turn and full throttle down the straight.

I'd also like to see a proper grid start with the ability to jump start. Might actually make it a challenge instead of sitting there in first gear waiting for the timer to say go.

They just don't have it on in these various time limited demos for obvious reasons, plus some tracks aren't suited for grid starts
What reasons would they be then? I've already explained that you are more likely to finish in a higher relative position from a grid start than you are one of these unrealistic rolling starts where the cars are far apart and in single file. OK, so the cars cross the line at 100mph+ or whatever meaning you get a bit more time at race speeds...big deal! It only takes a few seconds to get up to that speed anyway from a standing start. So, in what capacity is a standing start in a 2 minute demo not suitable?

Not only that, with only 8 cars on track in a lot of these demos, I can't name many tracks we have seen where grid starts would be physically limited and impractical.

Honestly, I'm hyper excited for this game, but I'm not going to defend every single aspect of it just because of that. I sincerely hope that they do put grid/rolling options in for us, and that in the final game, rolling starts are more realistic and not some precession of cars in single file all patiently waiting to cross the start/finish line before accelerating.

In some recent videos at the screen which shows the track/car grid, at the bottom left it says "start type" and then "rolling" & "standing", so I assume we can choose this as an option for online atleast.

Once there was an online event at Fuji that had grid start enabled.
It had a huge performance impact at the first corner. Frame rate was probably more than halved.

Most online events on Fuji and Suzuka are grid starts. I never had much frame rate issues, couple spikes.

I don't know about the current situation but back then there were lobbies full of 12 or even 16 players. The engine wasn't able to handle this adequately.

Hope this is true, I'm kind of fed up with the advantage the pole position car gets at the start of short races.

Even if we don't have the ability to choose (at least in arcade/online modes), I'm hoping that there will be a mixture of the two in some of the events, IE touring car championships, prototype racing etc.

Well it takes more time to get a grid start going. It also takes more skill to get off the line and not create a cluster **** into the first corner. So at an event where your trying to get casual players into the game quickly and out, single file rolling starts are best

I got to scratch my post a while back, the two images here hint towards standing grid starts found in the lower left. As the indicate the start type.

Agreed that it makes for consistency, but anybody can still 🤬 up the first corner, even on a roller! Still, less chance of causing mayhem if they do I guess, likely to only take themselves out.

I prefer grid starts mainly because if I'm on pole, I can try and pin the person in 2nd, possibly my team mate, onto the wall which subsequently gives 3rd place a run up the outside and then ruin my own race...
Oh wait... My name isn't Seb Vettel...
:D

Grid starts, rolling starts suck for most of the races.

I prefer grid starts though.

👍
good point! You have convinced me that PD should include this option in GT5 starts so we can end up with...
Grid start (side by side)
Rolling start (side by side)
Rolling start (single file)

Even rolling starts side by side would be awkward, especially in online races considering theres a increased chance of contact.

Negative! I do them all the time with pickup races in GTR2 and Race07. If the pilots have half a brain there are no problems with side by side rolling starts.
:)

Good idea I would like to see parade laps to, especially for a rolling start :)

When I last played the LFS demo online, I don't recall being able to do one race with a clean grid start into turn 1....

There was always some pile up or incident :)

talking seriously I prefer grid starts but in endurance or nascar maybe it's better a roll start

I wish there are qualify sessions before each race. But proper qualify sessions. But then, that would demand a number of rules according to each category… Maybe an idea?

About grid vs rolling, I guess each to it's kind. SHould be considered the racing category, and the track too. For example, a grid start in an oval would be somewhat dumb. As a rolling start in Suzuka.

good point about qualifying. I know that in many PC racing sims the host can choose to have/not have a qualifying session. I think that would an awesome option for GT5.
:)

Doesnt make much difference while the only thing the player needs to do is hold down X and wait for everyone to launch at the same time.

Could really do with a decent drop clutch launch method, let the player have a say in how the start goes.

Have notice in recent videos we seem to have an array of different starts from

side by side countdown start for nascar,

The one below shows single file rolling start all at the same time, wihich to me seems better than GT5P one after anouther start,

And this picture here states the type of start which leaves me to believe we will be able to change it.
