I've only recently got into the online racing (quick matches) and much the same as single player races, I go out of my way to avoid collisions or bumping other cars wide entering corners, at the expense of my own pace.

I don't mind losing a position if someone gets a good draft off me (I only move once to defend) but I've found that if I try and defend the racing line when I'm in front, it seems to be an invitation to shunt me into the corner wide or squeezed onto the grass.

Do you ever think it's acceptable to play "tit for tat" when other drivers do it to you? The main reason I'm asking is that I'm losing a few races trying to keep it totally clean. It's more rewarding if I know I've not used gamesmanship to take a position but I'm starting to think I need to be a bit more ruthless to get more wins. I'm happy with a clean 2nd, 3rd or 4th but I've had chances at risky gaps for better...

Does it still feel like a viable win if you do it though?

My advice , if you want clean racing , join a league or series and try to avoid public lobbies and especially quickraces.
You're absolutely right about a clean 4th, 3rd, etc. place is better than a dirty win.

Take a look at the clubs and leagues section , there's definatly something that fits your racing style and timezone 👍

there's nothing better than racing countless laps side by side in a hard but clean manner , with the final decission on the last corner in the last lap.

Well online is full of all types.
I use to run in @watermelonpunch shuffle club, where it's mandatory to drive clean, and I followed the rules.

In random lobbies, I do believe in rubbin's racin'. It's impossible to run a race without contact. But if I get pushed/hit off the track multiple times in 1 lap by the same person, I WILL return the favor.

Dirty NASCAR and other lobbies with "dirty" in the title, expect anything goes.

I'll have a look at the clubs and such. Hopefully I can find other casual racers who like fair play.

I've started adding a few friends who drive similarly so it's got to be the way to go.

I understand where your coming from, the same keeps happening to me, opponents deliberately slamming me off whereas i try to keep it clean, makes me want to retaliate!

Good thing that you are trying online races, bad thing is that you are starting it using quick match. You can find anything online, but quick match will raise your chances to get dirty drivers.

Like King and ryzno have said, clubs and leagues are a great way to make friends, have clean races and actually see how fast you really are, but you can also find that on public rooms. I suggest you go to open lobby and join a room with rules that suit you, if you like it, add the host and the ones that you had a good clean race. This way you can join them in another time, using the "friends only" filter.

And yes, a clean 3rd is way better than a dirty win, respect to be respected, you will find good drivers online that think the same way.

If someone gets dirty don't worry about it, just let it go, trust me, it's not worth it.

I've had a quick look through the clubs but I'm struggling with the times they're held. Most are peak times so there's a chance anyone can turn up, but my missus growls at me if I want the TV when she has the remote... I've more chance of beating IMMORTAL than getting the remote early.

I'll see if I can find some late (10.30pm+) races to have a go at. I don't work anymore so I can go up to 2 or 3am to get a fix.

I'll work at getting a friends list going too as I've never bothered with it before. 46 year old grandad with 3 days worth of quick matches under my belt so never had the need for it before. A couple of days on quick race saw other players add me to their list so I'll see if I can grab a few myself for casual racing with friends in a race we make.

Some good advice in here. Thanks very much.

Don't loose your hope in online, this game comes alive when you race with real people.

If you have a free sunday night, and like to race cars with no modification or tuning(stock), have a look at S.N.A.I.L Spec Racing, in "GT6 Clubs & Leagues". You will find some good races in different divisions and some drivers that are actually older than you :). There is also plenty of other options.

But like i said before, there are some great races on public rooms, you just have to find the right ones.

Forget Quick Match. Online racing in GT has few consequences without a good host to begin with, but in QM rooms there's no accountability at all and it's bound to bring out the worst quality players and the worst in them as well. As others have said you can find a club or series to race in, but you can have some success by going through various lobbies, finding hosts that do a good job and friending them and/or other racers in that lobby. In time you'll build a good list of friends who are clean racers, then just join their lobbies when you see them online.

Arguably, the good thing about the quick matches is that if you can get some success in them and avoid getting into trouble with the drivers looking for it, it'll do me good for when I find a properly organized race.

I like the look of the S.N.A.I.L races as they race stock with the driver skill being more important. I take my hat off to the tuners out there who can squeeze extra time off a lap but pick up and play is what I'm after.

I've got decent pace with consistent lap times, but being an online newbie, I've still got a lot to learn about racecraft. I did do a bit of racing once (20 years ago) but I don't think thrashing round a Cortina estate on a 250m banger racing oval counts towards online racing skills...unless it's quick match.

I'll get there and hopefully meet some of you on the track sometime.

yes come join SNAIL you wont be dissappointed :D

the cesspool that is "Quick Match" ... it's the fly paper, the roach motel ... it is fulfilling it's intended purpose

... which is, to weed out a lot of the eight year olds, and the adult fooks that cannot hope to win races without crashing actual drivers out of contention ... they thrive in the shyte, and they are magnetized to it

what this does, hopefully, is reduce the percentage of low quality drivers from other public races ... not enough, but some

If it wants to get drivers involved in online racing, it has to make the penalties more harsh to make moves like short cutting less viable. Education has to be better than turning a blind eye to bad driving.

After being bashed about and short cut passed all day in these quick matches, I've just about had enough. 90% of the races see bad driving so the only solution is finding a well run race in the open lobby.

At least it served the purpose of making me realise how much I like online racing after racing against the clock (with a bit of AI overtaking practice thrown in) in single player. I've learned more in a few days than years of single player racing and I'm hooked.

If anyone has got a stock race set up in the open lobby, please keep me in mind. ID is kilesa4568. Preferably strict rules.

I sometimes run stock races in Open Lobby on a Saturday night, 7pm till 12pm UK time. What timezone are you in?

Try any of the events or series in GTP Classix Club for a quality and clean online driving experience.

No - don't hit people back - it is very easy to accidentally hit people due to different car characteristics, different driving styles and also of course - making mistakes. I also don't move to defend - just follow the correct racing line and let other racers find a clean way past. Most people makes mistakes from time to time so if you are patient and consistent clean opportunities to pass will present themselves without the need for contact.

Good luck and enjoy your online journey. Find a series (or two) that you like with clean racers and your enjoyment will increase greatly.

Thanks to all for the offers of races but I've just had a scary thought. Am I being invited to races where a lot of the people are using wheels?

I've had a G27 myself but I couldn't use it anymore due to health reasons. I'm reasonably quick and smooth with the controller but I've lost a bit of pace with it. Only a second or two a lap but I'm working on getting that back...

Just letting you know in case you want pacy drivers.

You go and set a time trial for S.NA.I.L. and you're going to be accomodated with people on your pace/skill level

Although most of our racers use wheels (probably because they are at the mature / very mature end of the age range) some of the fastest and best use a hand controller. I don't know how old you are, but if you are over 60 you can join the GTP Geezer club - that is a great club and full of fast, clean racers.

People who race in my lobbies can use a wheel or a controller, doesn't matter as long as they're gentlemen racers. They can be fast or slow, doesn't matter as long as they're gentlemen racers who just want to have some good clean fun with like minded drivers.

:)

I'm 46 so it'll probably be GT9 or 10 by the time I'm old enough for the geezer club. Good to hear that GT has such a wide age band for drivers though.

I usually get into the top 5000 of the hot lapping seasonals without messing with tuning, but with a bit of effort (I usually just do enough for gold), I could probably get into the top 4000. I think I might get better lap times doing races though as I usually err on the side of caution with hot laps.

Does that give you a rough idea of my pace?

As for driving gentlemanly, always. Oh, I've been tempted to the dark side with some of the boisterous quick match racing scrotes. Sooo tempted. I haven't though. Did 4 races yesterday on Silverstone. Get into 1st place nice and clean, bumped off track on all 4 by bad drivers. Catch up, get into the lead again, only to get bumped again or see them open up a 5 second gap with massive shortcuts when they knew I was going to overtake again. Sigh. I turned the PS3 off.

I sent the guys doing it a quick, polite message asking them to "please learn how to drive clean" and got 3 messages back. One telling me to f-off and the other 2 told me to "learn how to drive". I think the messages about learning how to drive had a word missing at the end, "Dirty."

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to some of these organized races.

Basically this is (one of many) reasons why I feel online play is extremely overrated.

It's like golf for the average golfer. You continue to play chasing that one perfect shot you seem to get every round, the one you remember forever. In between there are 99 so-so and bad ones...but that one sweet shot keeps you coming back.

It's the other way around for me in my Open Lobbies, 99% of the races are clean & awesome. Once I open a room, I then send a text message to everyone on my PSN Friends List & to every player recently met (in stock lobbies, which is all I race). That way the majority of players who turn up are already great drivers. Having my room set to Comfort Hard to Sports Hard weeds out the Racing Soft brigade, & with SRF off even less noobs are gonna show up.

👍

That's another good point, the more "professional" you go the better, the chances of having dirty driving in a lobby where the rules are set to realistic is small. I join public lobbies all the time, and i don't remember the last time i saw a dirty driver on my way.

@kilesa4568, i don't know what tires you use, but don't go for high grip tires, try to use sport hards only after the 500pp mark. Less grip = better battles.
