Hopefully posts like mine will point out to you that you SAT score does not indicate any level of intelligence. It indicates only how hard you studied for the SAT and how adept you are at taking standardized tests (which is something that can be learned).

Please, don't perpetuate the steryotype that the SAT is some kind of IQ test. It is nothing of the sort.

That being said, good job Skip! I'm sure you spent hours taking practice tests to get a score like that. I assume you'll be getting a National Merit Scholarship...

A big part of doing well is just knowing the test (like Klos said, it's an "aptitude" test, which doesnt really mean actual knowledge). Of course, knowing algebra/geometry/basic grammer is needed to do well, but also knowing when to guess is a big part. If you can eliminate two choices, guess. Otherwise, leave it blank. I found this book to have real good tips on how/when to guess. Definitely worth the $6 bucks.

And isn't a 1570 just 30 points away from a perfect score? I may be wrong but i don't know.

Yeah, I got a 800 Math / 770 Verbal. Now I hear a writing/grammar portion of the test is going to be included. No fun. I had to take the SAT II Writitng (didn't do quite so well on that), so I guess thats about the same thing.

I didnt get a National Merit Scholarship, there requirements are very stringent...there are a lot of very intelligent people out there.

I see, I just realized it's only the PSAT that figures in to National Merit.

If you got that score on the PSAT (150+) you'd have gotten it for certain.

Eh....SAT scores are the best part of my college app right now. I've got a 1570 on the SAT1 and a 34 on the ACT, then a bunch of nice scores on the SAT2's. But on the national merit thing, it's counted out of 240 cause they have the writing part on the PSAT too. And no scholarship for me either. Bah.

I got a full scholarship at Boston University and Worcester Polytechnic.

I also got into Brown, Carnigie Mellon, and UMass Amherst (safety school). MIT rejected me. That accounts for all six schools I applied to.

I am going to BU, but I lost the scholarship. 3.43 GPA while a 3.5 was required (I was taking lots of sophomore classes freshman year...so grades were good, but not great). I wrote letters, but they showed no mercy. Oh well.

The first time I took it I was half asleep and got some 980...or 9something. The second time I was a bit more awake and got a 1320. I was quite a bit more pleased with myself.

Uh huh. I should have thought "am I going to be able to keep this GPA?" and looked at the real cost of the school rather than just counting on a more or less free ride.

Something between 1000 and 1100, but I don't remember the exact number. Back in the day (1992), that was okay to go to the 2nd-tier colleges, as long as your GPA was a "B"-average, and you could write a half-decent letter stating why you should be accepted.

In any case, I've met some dumb-asses who got 1500's and some exceptionally smart and witty people who got 800's. The SAT is another type of skill measurement, but by no means an absolute indicator of intelligence: It shows how well you know algebra, can read very boring passages, and make nearly-pointless analogies.

There's absolutely nothing about penmanship, history, art, dexterity, logic, or auto racing in the SAT.

My girlfriend graduated highschool with better than a 4.0. She has a 3.989 so far on her bachelor's degree. Her masters will also be something absurdly high like that. Then she'll get a job making twice what I am fresh out of college and I get to retire at age 30 (: Stay home, do laundry, take care of the dogs. PS- 1280, if I remember right. Not that scoring well or poorly on my SAT ended up affecting my life in a single meaningful way. It sure as hell didn't put the BMW in the garage.

yea...kids in middle school take the SAT if they did well on the standardized test they do every year.(forgot what it was called). Also...for freshmen year I got a cumulative of 3.34. The only good thing is that UC colleges dont look at freshmen year I believe. Berkeley is very hard to get into, is boston tough as well? Tell me some good cali colleges u guys think are sort of easy to get in...Im very nervous lmao. (A decent business school).

I'm not going to a proper University (what you guys call College). I'll head over to the Police College (what you guys call an Academy). I only need a 66 (what you guys call a 1056) to get in and a 'D' in English. Which is basically the lowest pass you can get.

I dont know what type of scool you want, big or small, city/rural..etc...but I can tell you a few things. Apply to your state school. Its really a great vaue for the education you get, and probably pretty easy to get into--you may also get merit scholarships there, too. What do you mean by Boston? Boston Univ. is fairly easy to get into for buisness (and is pretty respected, too). It varies a lot depending on what major you put down. Northeastern is another school likely to give merit scholarships, and has a decent business program I hear.

GPA has absolutely no bearing on your SAT scores. My best guess would be somewhere between 400 and 1600.

The SAT is an achievement test used by colleges during the admissions process. They allow colleges to more easily admit or refuse students.

The scores range from 400 to 1600, and all it basically tests is your ability to take tests. It really isn't a great barometer of how good a student you are. I was an atrocious student in high school and I scored a 1250, which is a quite a bit higher than average (probably around 1000).

Well I know what the SAT's are, I'm taking them this year. I'll shoot for between a 400 and 1600 though.

Merit scholarship - a scholarship based soley on your academic performance.
Need-based scholarship/aid - scholarship/aid based on your/your familiy's financial situation.
Most ivy league and other highly competitive schools only give you need-based aid, which can make the cost pretty unmanagable for many middle-class families. But everyone can get a loan.

I only took them once, as a Junior in High School. Got a 1253 on them. COuld have done better if I would have taken them again. The funny thing is I never used the scored to get into any school because I just went back to college about 3 years ago. Making my SAT scores to old to be worth anything. I had to take a college placement exam, which I passed with flying colors, so I was allowed to take college level courses right away.

I have a more important test coming up in December. The GRE. Those are scores I will care about.

According to the Post, Gore's SATs were a strong 1355 (625 verbal, 730 math) as compared to Texas Gov. George W. Bush's 1206 (566 verbal, 640 math).

With all these scores floating around, it's interesting to see the scores of two people we all know pretty well.

Neon_duke:I took them two times. Each combined score was around 1350. If you took the two best English/math, they were about 1450.

The same goes for me.
