Re: The boxer rumble debate

The only sound we've heard so far was from a hand-held cam directly above the engine bay. Hardly the best way to tell if it has the "classic boxer exhaust sound". All you get above most engines is some induction noise and mechanical thrashing unless you're next to an old Ferrari race car with twelve separate open carbs.

Equal or unequal length headers.

Equal. They most likely wrung the motor out, close to, as far as it will go, so EL headers make more sense.
Only reason you get unequals on the wrx/sti is for the boxer sound, as far as I'm aware.

I'm going out of my realm here because even though I'm a die hard subaru fan, I don't know their motors too well. If it's still a Subaru motor and wrx headers fit a 2.5I, shouldn't they, in theory of course, fit this motor?
That's because the wrx and 2.5i are basically using the same engine, basically. The new 2.0L is not the same. That's as far as I can go for now. Only tech differences I'm finding between the FA and FB/EJ is the bore. Not sure of much more but I'm inclined to say no.

When looking through the new cars I was wondering how they came up with almost the same as the Toyota.

They were all designed at the same time, by the same people, and will share an overwhelming majority of their parts to dramatically decrease costs across the board. The Toyota GT86 will be sold in just about everywhere except North America, where it will instead be offered as the Scion FR-S. The Subaru BRZ will be the only global version of the car, a testament to their engineering work on the car.

Did everyone miss this video?

Sounds good to me. Almost sounds too aggressive, though. I feel like I would hear the exhaust/engine note and expect more speed. The T5 Volvos have the same problem, IMO. They sound really good but don't have the punch to back it up. But of course that just gives you extra reason to treat it even more like the drivers car it is.

Apparently so. But that sounds really good to me. Definitely has character, different from any Impreza I've been in but certainly not a dull 4-cylinder drone like you might get from an inline four.

i love it.It seems like a joy to drive.Seems very dynamic, looks good, sounds good.I guess we will all b driving it virtually at least.I wasn't planning on getting a new car but i am really exited about this car.I think they did a good job packaging the scion frs i would most likely buy the frs though. The only way i would buy the BRZ is if it's the STI version.Standard with wr blue and gold rims.

If that's true, only more good news for the Scion.

Go about five minutes into that and he's drifting and stuff. Pretty awesome.

Just read the Jalopnik article on pricing. Confused that the "Limited" comes with 17" wheels...Is there going to be a base model below what we keep seeing then?

Boxer rumble? Meh, I like my Subies but I am not attached to the UEL sound. Heck, I'm even selling my SPT exhaust since it started annoying me.

The SPT annoys you? Thou art no subaru fancier! Throw an Invidia N1 on there and you'll be happy lol

The base model will be called Premium and the next level up is called Limited.

Considering the price and content of the Subaru. I wouldn't be surprised if the Scion is $20K.

Here are a couple examples of cost cutting. (Toyota/BRZ vs Scion)

People have noticed a few places where costs were cut compared to the 86. Of course these might be just differences between trim models, but the fact that Scion showed a more basic car than the loaded 86's in Japan is saying something about this car's mission.

No LED lamps or fog lights (at least on the displayed model)

The 86 piston badge is alive and well, which is nice.

The rear exhausts are smaller.

People have mentioned this as a cost saving measure, but the US spec BRZ has these as well. It might be due to that controversy of exhausts sticking out too far that we heard about before.

Inside is where the cost cutting is more obvious.

No digital read outs above the HVAC controls.

Looks like no push button start

The piston badge on the 86 comes with red highlights

The piston badge on the FR-S is unpainted.

The engine cover on the 86 comes with silver letters

No silver letters of FR-S engine cover.

Alot of the interior bits look like differences in trim levels.

Nice padding around the doors with stitching on the 86, with leather seats

Cheaper plastic there on the FR-S, with cloth seats

Leather wrapped shift knob and handbrake with chrome accents, and seat warmers

Not there are on the FR-S, even the buttons at the base of the shifter are not metallic in color.

I'm aware. They list 17" wheels as one of the features of the Limited, so what does the base (Premium) have?

Re: Cost cutting

What's nice is almost none of that matters, aesthetically or otherwise. I like the 86 badge without the accents honestly. Push button start is kinda cool the first few times. Colors of buttons doesn't matter. And amen for cloth seats.

Page 37 says 16" on lower spec or 17" on high spec but I'm not sure anymore.
They have 18s on the euro model.

16in steel with 17in aluminum optional

16" front disks and 15" rear disks on the Limited?
erm, ok jalopnik needs to check their sources.

The brakes on the Limited and Premium are the same on the motor trend link ^ it says 11.6 in the front and 11.4 in the rear.
All the info came from Motor Trend's editor-in-chief, Ed Loh. http://www.ft86club.com/?p=904

The 86 badge reminds me far too much of something GM would try to do. Don't like it much at all. Would much rather have the Subaru fenders on the Scion, since the simpler, cleaner face on the Scion just looks more "business."

In as far as the exhaust note, I do like it. Then again, I like air-cooled Volkswagens, too. Gramps had a dune buggy for a short time that sounded a bit like a Harley.
