It would be difficult to pair it from a marketing standpoint with either of them, though; as one of them is the performance version of a pedestrian luxury car and the other one is a no-expenses-spared crazy-go-nuts halo car.

Also, based on how "basic" the BreesFreez is, it would almost give off Cimarron vibes I'm guessing unless they spent a lot of money reinvesting to make it different.

Yup. Would be a hard sell I reckon. You can spec up an 86/BRZ with leather as it is, and I'm not sure where you'd really go from there to make it a Lexus without big changes.

No real motivation for Lexus either. They already have a small car, the CT 200h, and it's selling like crazy in the US and elsewhere. Having another small car that doesn't really fit in with the brand values doesn't make a lot of sense.

I'm not sure about the crazy selling part. In chicago, I've seen maybe 3 or 4 when the car launched, and rarely see them now.

Talked with a salesman at the Scion dealer today, what a trip.

First of all, he was very pushy to get the car into my hands. The car they have currently is an orange model with zero options, the man who had intended to buy the car drove it and decided he'd rather have a 6AT. According to the salesman, a lot of people have looked at it, but no one has been willing to take it. Huh.

He asked why I was at Toyota today, told him about my Celica being in for service and that I was looking around for a possible replacement. I was already looking at the FR-S, and almost immediately he suggested the tC as an alternative. You know, totally different car.

He asked what I was looking at, I said the following:

  1. Ford Mustang V6 Track Pack
  2. Subaru BRZ
  3. Mazda MX-5
  4. Ford Focus ST

According to him, the Scion is a "totally different car," and quickly reminded me that "Toyota owns Subaru," and that "even though the BRZ and FR-S were developed at a similar time, they're totally different cars."

I asked about what it's like to drive, according to him, "unlike anything on the road." I said that I knew they wanted to make it like the original MX-5, he said, "NO, totally different car! The Mazda doesn't have 200 BHP!" But, the driving dynamics? "TOTALLY DIFFERENT CARRRR!!!!11!!!1!"

After that, we talked about the money side. "How much are you looking to spend on this totally different car?" he asked. I informed him that my budget pretty much stops at $23K, which is where everyone else is at. He tried to end things, FULL STOP, right there. PURE PRICE, yadda yadda yadda, gives me his card, have a nice day.

If this is the kind of experience that people are going to have at the Scion dealer, I'm not particularly impressed. I understand that Pure Price is pretty much set in stone, but you don't have to be a dick about it. After all, this is Michigan, and who the hell doesn't get a discount at at least one of the American brands? Even if I get this promotion at work, and have the money to buy it, I won't be going through this guy.

Decided he'd rather have a what? He decided he'd rather have no male genetalia and get laughed at in the face by yours truly?

I can't say I would ever buy a car on credit. I'm going to try my hardest to buy my first newish car with cash, $20 grand if need be. I would walk into the Scion dealership and the first thing I would do is demand to speak to somebody more important than the salesman. Then I would demand to speak to somebody more important than that. Then I'd arrange my $20,000 worth of little cash bricks on the table and ask him if his boss expects him to sell cars or not. If he says yes, his job is to sell cars, then I would tell him to bring me the paperwork and a pen. If he says no, then I'd demand to speak to his boss and I would inform said boss that the underling stated that his job is not to sell cars. The boss would not be happy and would fire the man. Then I would purchase the car, but before I left I would make sure to spit on the underling's windshield to remind him of how pitiful a human being he is.

Something like that. Either way, I want to pay for it with cash and I would not leave the dealership without a new car. I'm fine with driving to Cincinnati to get it serviced.

Edit: Auto ^^^ (yeah, one of those things...)

Perfect example of why I stay away from dealerships unless I really need to go there. I find it funny when I pull up and 3 guys storm me asking if I need help. I just point at the parts department and say "No thanks, found it".

My Scion dealer let me take my Xd out without signing an piece of paperwork, or even license check. The Salesmen was really busy so he let me take it up onto the highway, turn around at the exit and come back (like 5 miles or so). I like the way the car felt compared to other cars i test drove and i thought it looked by far the nicest. Wrote a check for $16,101.50 out of my inheritance and my car was shipped in like a week later.

That's my scion dealer story.

I was surprised to read the FR-S wasn't selling all that well compared to the BRZ, that might be one of the reasons why.

Maybe he figured, you know. Replace one Camry coupe with another Camry coupe.

:p

Or maybe he's just desperate because they haven't sold any in half a decade.

Those tires sound like they are garbage. That sound

It's because they are garbage. They are Michelin Primacy HP's which is a "Low Resistance" Grand Touring Summer Tire. It would have made more sense to go with a Pilot Super Sport or Pilot Sport 3 since they are actually performance oriented. I'm not sure how you could sell a sports car with crap tires on it and tout it as having outstanding driving dynamics.

Because they let you play on the limit without being in over your head when they let go.

It's nearest competitors all have performance oriented summer tires versus touring oriented though. I just feel summer touring tires wouldn't be nearly as good as actual performance tires, especially on a car designed for carving corners.

It does have outstanding driving dynamics. Not having super grippy tires actually lets you feel and play with the car's balance at moderate speeds. Obviously the car can't corner as fast as it could - Toyota engineers have specifically stated numerous times that going fast is not the point of this car. Fun is the point, and crappy tires makes it easy to have fun, i.e. test the limits of adhesion without going 100 mph like I have to do in my car.

Toyota has built a car that's damn near exactly what hardcore driving enthusiasts like myself want, and by all accounts so far this is basically the most fun sports car on the market right now. Believe me because I know that with better tires that car wouldn't be able to drift as easily or fluidly as it does. My car drifts like a champ but I have the same tires as D1 cars and I have to drive D1 speeds to make it happen.

Thing is, the guys at the dealer won't tell you that. Or, the guys at mine didn't. When I asked about it, they seemed very off-put by the question. I don't know if it is because they don't know how to drive, or because it's that they've worked for Toyota during their most boring product line, ever... I don't think they have any idea what a sports car like this is supposed to represent or do.

I've never met a car salesman in my life that knew more about a particular car than I did. Most of the time they're bull****ting and I simply don't pay attention to them. Tell me something interesting like secret storage cubbies or where the jack is.

Brad. They don't sell cars to you. You buy cars from them. Keep that in mind.

Funny enough, when I went to see the FRS, just as I was leaving the sales person said...

Salesman: "If you have any questions call me, actually, from the sound of it YOU probably know more than all of us here..."

Kent: "In that case, if you guys have any questions go ahead and call me."

Everyone:

I went to the Toyota dealer a week ago hoping to pick up a brochure for the 86. The conversation went a little like:

Me: hi
Dealer: hello sir, how can I help?
Me:I'd like a brochure for the 86.
Dealer:what? The ae86? It isn't on sale anymore!
Me:no the gt 86!
Dealer: hmmm. I'll check.

5 minutes later.
Dealer: no.

Went to Subaru. Got a brochure straight away and got to see the car in black, white and blue. :)

That, is pretty pathetic.
