Afriend at work has just bought GT3 yesterday (god knows why he hasnt bought it already !) and Ive got him registered. As he was clicking through the registration screens and process I had a thought,

He has no idea of what a forum is - his first question was "whats a thread?"
so I figured that whenever someone registers for the first time couldnt there be some sort of automatic PM from Jordan or one of the mods which tells them exactly how to use the forums ? I mean you got to have half a brain to get to GTP and register in the first place so in the case of my friend if he were to receive a pm with tips and hints and guides in it it wouls do him the world of good. The best thing is this, included in the pm there could be a polite message (a short one) about posting and searching etc....

Its just a thought I had when my friend was registering - thats all

great idea!! i know wot you mean, this was the first forum ive ever been a member of, so it was a bit of a learning experiance. When your new hear, it can be quite daunting and confusing.

Ok, I voted yes. For one main reason. There are new people that come in that aren't post whores or trolls. Some come in, do a search, look through stuff, then post something.

If you want to be honest, this may not apply to the GT4 forum, but here's the issue. I spend most of my time in the GT3 and Drifting forums. I've seen many new people come in and post a new thread on an obvious topic(like "how to drift")and are then told to do a search(I've done it a few times myself). But there are the people that do a search, find the topic they were looking for, post on that thread and then get flamed because they're bringing back an old thread! So what's a noob to do? :boggled: If he posts a new thread on a topic that's been discussed, he gets flamed. :banghead: If he posts a reply to an old thread, he gets flamed. :banghead:

Honestly, I think that some of us(myself included) need to relax and let people post. Like Der Alta said, without new people, this place is dead.

There's the help page.

Well, it's not like your not bashing them. Your calling them idiots, Darin, do you expect them to say thank you?

I'm going to go check out this situation.

You gotta be quick!
Sho Nuf!

Yes, the situation in the FT4 forum i spretty serious. even approaching severe. Something certainly needs to be done. But I don't think making a certain post count manditory for new threads is a viable answer.

Swift - The GT4 forums is ok at the moment. It looks much cleaner (thanks to sn00pie). It could happen that a new n00b making a useless thread (not for the 1st time) , but it's still ok in the forum at the time. So it's not that serious.

Well, I'm not big into that forum so I'll leave that to those of you that are.

New people are needed to keep this place alive. There's always going to be new people making stupid posts. But as long as they don't get rude or indignant about it. What's the harm?

New members will always be able to create threads. Controlling the popularity of the GT4 forum will be dealt with by the help of new moderators. And no, if you contact me first about it, you can't be one. But, more importantly, I think the concept about complaining of one's own actions is quite ironic. Despite all the controls and regulations, a community is still only as good as YOU, the members, make it. Perhaps more of you should read this thread and take your own advice.

I never said that if the poll went through that the idea would most definately be put through, I just wanted to note that something should be done. Apparently the GT4 forum has been cleaned and looks great right now. Most of the threads have 2, 3, even 7 pages worth of quality conversation. So far exactly 50% like my idea, but there's no way to actutally carry it through. You're the boss. ;)

I know sUn - I just figured that we could change the message in the PM from time to time eg As GT4 comes out it could give pointes about what we have all been complaining about - Nevermind, it was just a passing thought

All this talk, I wonder why I'm not a moderator. I've been here longer than just about any normal user, and as long, if not longer, than a few moderators. In fact, I should be a SuperMan too....

The GT4 section seems a lot tidier and it seems that a Mod is attempting to clean up and close any duplicate threads.

That is perfect and will work, the mod is politely closing threads and informing the poster that its not a neccessary thread and also linking to the relevant thread already available on that particular topic.

I wanted to say good luck to the Mod - and other Mods when closing threads and 👍 for getting it cleaned up.

I still think we need a GT4 Archive forum to move all the closed threads. There are like 20 locked threads in the forum front page, where they could be in a Archive forum. :p

The system of the "Active Mod" is working well.

The locked threads will be gone soon "aux natural" you don't need an archive.

There will always be new members that create "pointless" threads, and it will happen in clusters.

Some of them (I am sure!) are comedians, and read the "Sticky Threads" then create a useless thread for fun! Their comedy timing is amazing

"If it aint broke...don't fix it"

I've noticed my name brought up in this thread a couple of times - I'm honoured that you guys (hey, even if it's just two of you :D) think I'd be a good moderator. However, I've only been on the site a little over a year (well... 17 months I think) and I don't think Jordan and the guys are - or need to be - recruiting currently.

The moderating staff do a good job here, except for sn00pie who sucks - I'm a moderator at two other sites and I know how tough it can be judging that line, and we sometimes don't make it any easier by stuffing threads full of "Stupid n00b" and repeated "Search" button responses - once is enough.

I, for one, raise a glass to the moderating team here - or the "Super-moderating team", as they all are now. But in sn00pie's case it's to poor a full pint of Duvel over his head.

Out of interest - who here would seriously like to BE a moderator on this site? I come online, spend about an hour or so browsing the latest and go again. A moderator would have to come online, check all the PMs people have sent them, then check all the current reported threads - tidying up any that need tidying - and then and ONLY then check the latest on the forums. Of course now that people can see they're online, they'll get some more PMs, and more threads will be reported while they're here. It's no wonder that almost all the moderating staff, despite relatively high post counts, have waning posts-per-day - the amount of time they have to add posts to the community is tempered by the amount of time they have to spend taking care of the community. I can't see moderating being just a fun jaunt in the park - especially on a site THIS size.

*Just kidding, sn00pie. I haven't got the heart to be as mean to you as Doug is...

On the forums I've been part of, we worked off a system of having assigned sections. All moderators generally could moderate anywhere if required, but otherwise, one person specialised in a particular forum of discussion, and that was highlighted as part of the forum description (Moderated By: Name, Name line underneath forum description, Names as links to the member profile for the moderators in question). So perhaps a system like that is the way to go? So everyone doesn't wind up with my constant requests for thread closures, just a few poor saps.

I'd enjoy becoming a moderator I think, but I'm a relative n00b, and we all know the ToS, so I'm not going to ask. I assume if you guys think I'd be useful and deserving at some point in time you'll contact me about it, otherwise, life goes on. I do tend to spend exhorbitant amounts of time here - essentially most of thet time I'm at home I have a GTP tab open, I certainly clicked "More than 60 minutes" in that survey we were asked to take ;)

Eagle, that's how the moderators were before they were promoted Super Moderators. They were assigned to 1-4 forums at a time.

I'm more than sure every member here who's been here for more than 3 months and knows most of GTPlanet members would put there hand up. Afterall, it's not easy to become a Moderator at the greatest gran turismo community on the internet right now.

Yes i just came here to raise a similar point. Is there no way of removing the threads?

There is, GTP has a Junk forum were deleted threads get moved too. We can't see that forum because for there junky threads. Those threads from my understanding are locked and left there for new members to see that information has been posted before, and if you post repeated information that's the outcome.

I think most people want to be Mods just because they think they'll get instant respect, because the moderators here are pretty much liked by everyone. That's because they're cool people, not because they're mods.

I wouldn't say no to becoming a mod, but purely because i like helping out. I know that wouldn't happen though because i argue far too much with people ;)
