So, how do you talk in real life?

I talk quite a bit differently in real life than I do on forums - Namely, I have that fairly distinct Californian way of saying things. Yes, I do say "like" a lot when talking... it's close to impossible to have a normal conversation in California without saying "like". (However, I as well as most other people don't accent it horribly in the way that some valley girls, skaters, and surfers do). I was wondering today whether or not say, people living on the eastern part of the U.S. also say "like" a lot in day-to-day conversation, or would I in fact sound like an idiot if I were to talk to someone on the east coast?

So, how do the rest of you talk in real life?

Yes us southerners say "like" as well, but not as much (well...uh a few exceptions that I know of). Ya see we're too busy watchin' that there E--S--P--N.... oh I love making fun of the state that I sleep in.

I also say "like" alot. Most of the girls in my school try to add that little "valley girl" accent whenever they talk. It is very annoying.

Usually Normal English accent (i'm a southern fairy, not a northern monkey ), but then sometimes I go into a London'ish (not ****ing cockney) sweary mode, when i'm not so serious.

It's hard to describe.

Well, I have a slight Boston accent. It isn't nearly as bad as most people that live here, though. I am trying to rid myself of it because it makes you sound like a moron.

I have no accent and I almost never say "like." I suppose that's due to never living in one area long enough to acquire that regions accent. I used to live in Baaah Haaabah Maine (Bar Harbor). That's a crazy accent.

You just summed up a typical winters night for me right there

A bottle of Canadian in one hand, a Labatt Blue in the other, and screaming "Whatca talking aboot? He dove! These stupid ref's need glasses eh?" when the ref's make a bad call during the hockey game.

It is kinda sad cause I know that I am the exact definition of the stereotypical Canadian.

But I usually mumble quiet a lot and I tend to not talk formally and clearly due to going to a school full of people who swear in their everyday language and are such lazy talkers.

Ahh yes, the brilliant South African rugby team . Just gotta watch out for the eye gougers and testie grabbers .

The New Zealand accent is quite different to the Australian accent - NZ's tend to really shorten their vowels, making them all sound like 'eh', whereas we tend to drag 'i's out into 'oi'.

I tend to tailor how I speak to the situation. I can speak quite clearly and less accented in certain situations (usually dependant on the company), and can become very broad and nasal in true Australian style (usually more so depending on how much I've had to drink). I tend to swear more in those circumstances.

Yeah, the only difference between out accents is the i's and e's. It seems a nasal type of accent.

I had some Australian visitors come through my checkout last Sunday, one of them asked 'Oh, so do weee have to pay in New Zealand moneyyyy?'.

I felt like punching him.

Most people think the South African accent is German or British. That almost deserves a slap around the chops

Altho is is important to distinguish "white" and "black" SA accents....and no that isnt racist

But Afrikaans is based on German is it not? Maybe that is what most people get confused with.

Well I'm not vat but I'll say that our accent does sound the best...and that I think some Americans have some nasal problem when talking.

I usually start a conversation with something like, "Oi!" or if I know them a little or a lot, something like "Hey ****stick!" to see if they turn around...it usually gets people's attention when you want to talk to them.

I think it's pretty cool - and I do tend to play it up a bit with our Amercian friends. I can understand why others might find it grating though.

And Seppos definitely do have accents....
