After reading Herewards description of the game I decided to take the plunge, and I'm glad I did too, The game is fantastic!
The controls are very friendly, and are almost completely customisable, and I was able to find a comfortable layout that was similar to what I was used to in an FPS, but with enough of a difference to make the game feel fresh and challenging. There is also a raft of customisable features ranging from motion sensitivity settings, and functions, as well as overall look sensitivities. Very nice features! 👍
I rate any shooting game on its stances, and I'm chuffed that this game has all three - a very important feature!
SOCOM is a totally different experience to FPSs, though I did notice that there were runners and gunners in this game too. Tactics do play a big part in the game, though I have yet to fully understand all of the different game modes.
I was annoyed, that I was constantly being berated by Americans for not knowing what to do. A quick check on the SOCOM forums explained why. The game has been released for 6 months over there, so they are obviously further down the road than us Europeans who have only had the game since last weekend. Once I'm up to speed, I'm sure I will be telling them how to play the game.
There is actually quite a bit of consternation on this fact, and the forums seem to be filled with one or another guy having a go at the Americans.

I've previously got my fingers burned on that subject, so I'm happy to steer well clear (I keep it pleasant in game and otherwise)
Another nice feature is the fact that I can loadout my weapons as I please. There seems to be no delay (in progression), between me having a weapon of my choosing setup with the parts I like. I also like the difference between the commando and the mercenary. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of player, and it is interesting (and entertaining) to use both.
Graphically, the game is looks nice. its not KZ2, but that doesn't bother me so much. The developers have managed to convey the environments they have created very well, and I am really impressed with the size and detail of the maps - they are huge! There are plenty of places to go, and it is quite easy to find cover. On the few maps I played on last night, I had a great time. 👍
The only complaint that I have had so far is that the game 'seems' not to seem to be one shot one kill. I say 'seem', because I am not 100% with the shooting aspect yet. I'm sure that once I get to grips with the game, my aim will improve considerably.
another minor gripe is that I had difficulty laying claymores. I'm sure it was something I was doing, maybe time will tell if am doing it wrong.
There is something that I am curious about though (relating to the game). When my sights are up, occasionally, I will notice a little yellow target inside my sights, what is that for, and what does it mean?
I'm really chuffed with this game, and the scope of what it has on offer. if you haven't brought it, buy it! 👍
