Sometimes I truly wish PD would learn how to make a racing sim....

Lets see, it has cars and tracks and it simulates races. I think PD nailed it.

How many real race series don't have qualifying?
How many race series are based on PD's 'redefinition of racing' [from the back cover] that are the seasonal events?

Why have we never had a seasonal event where you even start from the middle of the pack on the grid and race on equal terms with the AI

What race series can you link to that don't have restrictions on entry (tyre type, car type, power etc...)

If you evaluate all these points how well does GT5 simulate racing?

[edit] Perhaps you could ask kaz ( a real race driver) how many series he enters where he always has to start at the back 30s behind pole, but is expected to cross the line first to win [ie not time based but first past the post]

If gt were to go even more sim like, the casual gamers that play gt as an accessible racing game will be alienated and put off, as the game is now too hard for them.
This is why I suggest an entire sim mode for serious racing in a season-long racing league format, in the league of your choice. How different could it be than including a separate B-Spec Mode that many choose to ignore completely if they want?

Or maybe just a set of realism options that could be applied to any section of the game?

I don't want to have to commit to an entire season just for realism sake.

They could really revolutionise racing gaming by providing an AI system that goes beyond Easy, medium & hard options by providing a set of sliders that allow you to adjust as an example off the top of my head....

  • aggression,
  • skill (ie how many mistakes they make statistically),
  • speed,
  • morality (how likely they are to cheat - cut corners etc..)

Well if you want all of that stuff then go play one of the SimBin games. Codemasters F1 2011 is hitting stores in a few weeks, I'm sure that would more than satisfy you. If that's what you really want, then there's more than enough choices to fill the void for you.

Would it be nice if these features were in Gran Turismo? Sure, why the hell not? But as of 11pm New York time on September 1st, 2011, they're not. There's not much point in continuing this debate any longer, other than to beat the proverbial dead horse.

Q: If you evaluate all these points how well does GT5 simulate racing?
A: Well if you want all of that stuff then go play one of the SimBin games.

So now we've gone from the common retort of "If you want some arcade racer with blah blah features, go buy product X" to "If you want properly simulated racing with blah blah features, go buy product Y".
The fact that we've gotten to the point that the argument for seemingly everything is now "go buy another companies product" is exactly why PD and Sony have comunicated more in the last 10 months about GT5's future than they have in the five years prior, and have made a definite effort to respond dirrectly to complaints. Where before there was hype, now there is substance, even two way comunication to an extent, even if it's still not at the level that some would want.
To some, continued discussion may be beating a dead horse, but to Sony/PD it's obviously been a tool of market research and a source of motivation to demonstrate that they are listening to constructive opinions, wishies, and/or mindless complaints, depending on individual perspective as to which is which.
Do we need to rehash the same silly is it a driving game, is it a racing game, is it a car museum, is it a rearview mirror decoration for your Yugo arguments? Probably not. But the underlying topics that often lead to the aforemention silliness are often very valid. Just because some people have to turn it into silly BS every time, untill a thread is reduced to worthless arguments about things like who's idea of the game is more correct than anothers, doesn't make the underlining debate moot. Continuing to assault such discussions by turning them to debates of purely personal opinions of things like personal notions of Kaz's vision or what GT has been or is ment to be, often making use of talking points not even really having any true bearring to the base disscussions in the process, maintaining as if said uttered opinions automatically quallify as inarguable fact, and doing so has a means to try and defeat any attempt at other's constructive criticisms amongst themselves, now thats a dead horse that gets beat waaaaaay past the point of pointless. Fact is, PD is listening, Sony is watching, debates will continue as long has people still get the feeling that they are being heard. The point of doing so is self evident in that regards.

Post of the week.👍

I guess the grand question is, "when the hell did so many people decide that GT5 is not, never was, and never should be a racing sim"?
Last I knew it's simulation aspect over rivals such as NFS was it's rise to glory, and now I hear more "you want a sim don't play GT" remarks than I ever could have imagined.

Just a question, but what in the world is a driving simulator anyways?
A game that simulates driving, i.e., traffic, redlights, stop signs, crosswalks, school zones, cops, going to the mall, movies, driving to work, obeying speed limits, DUI's, and the ability to lose your license if you race.

Then I guess PD should remove the "The Real Driving Simulator" moniker from their games.

When I was in high school, it wasn't even a game. Lol, It was a wooden box with a steering wheel and a few pedals. A slightly more recent version of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drivotrainer You sat in it and watched a movie from a reel to reel projector, on a big screen in the front of the room. You worked the pedals and wheel in relation to what you saw on a screen while a computer from about 1972 logged whether you did everything in the right order and amounts. Vague force feedback, no real idea if you where steering too much or too little. No reliable way to tell if you were stopping late or speeding. The teacher just passed everyone who showed up for class as long has we didn't start trouble. :nervous::dopey:

No. Common misconception.
And among other things, nothing prevents PD from offering options for those who want a more (or less) realistic driving experience.

It's not a common misconception. I have several friends who won't play gt5 because it is too serious for them, but will gladly play something like motorstorm.

And gt5 already has driving options implemented (admittedly it could use a little more refinement with a few options added)

Are you saying gt5 should be even more arcade? Or that gt5 is already too hardcore?

Sure gt5 is a different game than motorstorm. Totally different imho. Imho games like wipeout and motorstorm have more in common than gt5 and motorstorm so I have no idea why you even use motorstorm as some kind of example.

As long as PD are still updating GT discussing things that might improve the game are perfectly valid.

How many real race series don't have qualifying?

Things like this would piss me off, I as a father of 2 dont have much time to play so when I do have the time I just want to race and have fun.

I dont want to spend a cople of laps qualifying....

I have GT5 ,Forza 3 , Shift , Shift 2 , and I can say that the uppdates we get in GT 5 is way better then Shift 2 that on the PS3 is unplayble due to the speedcrash and steeringlag(I use a controller).

I sometimes wonder if GT5 is a kind of religion for some people. Why defend _or_ attack it? Why not just pop it in your PS3 every now and again and have a little fun with it? Then, when your done, play something else. Like Deus Ex: HR (incredible game).

This is a great community and I'm aware people can argue/debate/thrash things out to their hearts content. It surprises me how much mileage can be gotten out of the same old tired arguments though, like to prove yourself right of your opinion is a feat worthy of an accolade.

Back on topic: I support PD. They make good computer games.

And you didn't have to race cars to try it?!?

That's been the case for some people since consoles could handle better physics.
NFS has the arcade racing world pretty well covered, for GT to go full arcade would be it's demise. GT gained popularity for being different from all the arcade-like racing games, different as in more realistic.

And I fully support a better arcade mode for these reasons, but in career mode there's no place for it imo.
If PD wants to go arcade (which Kaz doesn't) then they will, and myself with a very large chunk of players will go elsewhere.

The funny thing is that when it comes to making a clean racing game with real racing rules and routines, gt has never ever been in the lead. Jeez, they haven't even been trying. But i still remember when gt first came and what I thought about it. I fell of the chair because, here we had so many road cars and never had it felt so real manoeuvring cars with a psx-controller.

Suddenly some ppl want PD to make a normal racing-sim and nothing else. I'm glad they aren't listening to closely since they salute completely different racing games.

Gt will always be a game for car-enthusiasts. And put racing-mode as a 2nd priority. At least i hope so.

So you can't imagine a system where you could erm let's see maybe skip qualifying and be placed in the middle of the pack.

You know options?

That I can agree with 100% , thing is though that you in some posts say you are done with gt5 and you play Shift 2 among others, as I see it PD gives way more uppdates trying to fix buggs give us more things to do while EA and SMS just dont care about even gamebreaking buggs in Shift 2 on the PS3

Gran Turismo has never done the race weekend, race marshalling, race regulations thing.

At most it's a Best Motoring race, except that even in that they qualify the car to determine a grid order, be it with lap time, or pwr. Online doesn't come up too short of this, I guess.

For me the marshalling etc wouldn't add much. The ai is still so ridiculously crap and slow and impossible to genuinely race that no gloss could change that.

I would enjoy a few of those things online, though.

For everyone saying PD cannot implement both hardcore sim options and and casual is kidding themselves.

Go grab an old TOCA series, every option is there to turn off flags, damage, physics, qualifying, everything! If PD cannot do this in 2012 when Codemasters did it in 2005 well then I really do not know what to say.

If PD did not care about racing, they would not be trying to make endurance events replicating the 24hours of Nurb and Le Mans. The fact is though, they do a bad job at recreating those events anyway.

Skip qualify, just like in GT1.

Add more realism does not have to force a player to make use of it.

This is why I say "make Season and Career Modes a separate section" just Like GT and Arcade. Then you can enjoy it at your leisure, doing it, skipping out to GT or Arcade Mode whenever you want to. It will remember your progress separately. When you go from GT Mode to Arcade, it doesn't wipe out your GT Mode progress, right? Same deal.

For everyone saying PD cannot implement both hardcore sim options and and casual is kidding themselves.
Spoken truly. Making a racing game based strictly on real world leagues, events and rules just requires a good number of the right tracks and come coding to handle rules, restrictions and stat tracking. GT5 already has a great physics model, it just needs the remaining ingredients.

For everyone saying PD cannot implement both hardcore sim options and and casual is kidding themselves.

Replace "cannot" with "apparently are unable or unwilling to".

I'm sure if they wanted to they could get done a load of things like these in a few days, but in a "Sim" game where the slipstream effect is a joke, tyre performance in wet conditions is ridiculous, a game where a nascar seasonal event locks you into using SKID ******G RECOVERY!!! we have to assume that there are either personal barriers or commercial barriers preventing them from doing so.
Maybe they think we're so dense that if they gave us options for all these many things we'd get so lost that we'd never buy another Gran Turismo game......:dunce:

Surely someone in PD is a hardcore motor racing fan that knows what can be accomplished in a racing sim, what it can offer everyone if they let us choose what we want to take from it ourselves (oh, I thought that someone was Kaz). Maybe they're so absorbed in Gran Turismo, that their only benchmark is the previous Gran Turismo.

For everyone saying PD cannot implement both hardcore sim options and and casual is kidding themselves.

EDIT I Misread cannot. My bad.

Then how did this much smaller company that focuses on hardcore sim lovers do it?

I agree from a technical standpoint.

Beyond the options to have the plane start for you mentioned in the first few seconds of video, the avionics and flight physics can be simplified to that of arcade flight game levels. It's very easy to go from sim to arcade.

FFS. I think even a brain dead person knows exactly the point behind 'The real driving simulator' Tag. This is what happens when you have a popular game like gran turismo. You get people with completely ridiculous aspirations on what a GT game should be.

You want to race? Join us online. We will show you what racing truly is.

What? You have missed my point completely :dunce:

I never said it should be harder or softer. I was responding to the "common misconception" by saying that the game is already too hardcore for some people to enjoy, but will gladly play an ARCADE racer like motorstorm, because they can have fun with those sorts of games.
