Sony may consider building a more powerful PS4 - article

Creating a more powerful PS4 would be a bad idea, all it would do is create a rift in the community, with one side owning the less powerful model and the other side owning the more powerful model. Sony would probably be better off bringing the PS5 to the market sooner instead.
 
It wouldn't be that much different than the PC world, except they would have to regulate the games being made. You don't want developers making them unplayable on the lesser system.
 
I'd prefer it if they looked into introducing some kind of plug and play upgrades so that people who already own a PS4 can upgrade to the new spec. Like the expansion pak of the modern generation :D

Edit: I don't know enough about the architecture to know if this is possible, so don't rip me apart please lol. If it is possible, it would be nice if they could expand the ram and gpu memory. Also, could they up the clock on the cpu? As I understand it, the X1 uses the same cpu with a higher clock speed. Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but be gentle ;)
 
Yeap, a plug and play upgrade is such a fantastic idea. Though, I hope Sony doesn't use the 32X as a model for success, cos' as brilliant an upgrade that was at the time, either it wasn't marketed right or it's potential not utilized properly.

The age of console upgrades (performance) should be here already. I mean seriously, why not?
 
It's the most completely stupid idea Sony could have ever considered. The whole POINT of a console is that it is a non moving target when it comes to development.

That was a fine looking combination. The original CD drive looked too straight laced, although it did fit the style of the Genesis/MD well enough.

Because then you have to pay money to play newer games PS4 games and you split the consumer base?
 
I don't think they'd do this. It would be suicide for the console industry, and wouldn't benefit anyone.

I didn't think I'd ever say this, but it's actually an even worse idea than the 24 hour online check in originally planned for the Xbox One. If the PS3 could survive for 7 years with an extremely modest set of specs, then the PS4 (and Xbox One) should have no problem what so ever with keeping up for the next 5 years. Optimizing games needs to become a priority again. It seems that whenever the standard moves up, as happened with the introduction of the PS4 and Xbox One, the performance requirements went through the roof. This is most noticeable on the PC, where developers have seemingly abandoned the idea of actually optimizing their games to run on modest hardware.

Because they're supposed to not be PCs, the lack of hardware upgrades (and therefore guaranteed compatibility and lower price) is almost literally the only thing that differentiates them now that DLC, patches, apps, proper OSes, the x86 architecture and all that other stuff is now a thing.
 
So where would you plug that plug and play hardware upgrade, usb slot? :lol:

Changing components inside I would not consider 'plug'n'play'.
 
32X was the dogs! Gaming was so much simpler in those days.

I'm a fool so I'd buy an upgraded PS4 or upgrade for my current PS4!
 
I play my PS4 enough to justify buying a better, beefier PS4. I guess I'd have two PS4's, or sell my current one (right away before the market gets flooded) so I don't get them confused, assuming they'll look identical.

Yeah it seems like an unrealistic proposition; why not release a more powerful console from day 1?

The problem is certainly not down to power but rather optimization. We have yet to see both consoles being optimized and exploited for maximum game performance. Give it another year or three I'd say.
 
The big selling point for a console is that it isn't a PC. A finite piece of hardware that gives a consistent, expected and regular performance medium to whoever owns it whenever it is played.


As said above, it didn't work for the 32X(or CD), it didn't work for the N64DD and it won't work for Sony. Also, it may not be directly video-game related but Sony have had a bash at this before:

I don't mind but this would hurt the PS5 sales as many would wait for an upgraded version.
This would also hurt its own playerbase as well. How is game developing going to work out? They are either going to have to restrict development, or the lesser hardware is going to have to deal with many problems. They are essentially going to split the playerbase into two groups.

Agreed. Consoles are pretty much nowadays are PC wannabes. The only reason to get consoles now is solely for the exclusives. Most of my previous exclusives titles have already moved to PC. Only 2 franchises remain at this point.

True. Ever since the PS2 era ended the whole play out of the box no update bs is long gone. I believe we will eventually hit another gaming bubble & crash like that of the late 80s. With all of this dlc, & incomplete games being released nonsense.

haha spot on there. At this point & for the foreseeable future I only see myself getting a PS console for the GT series; more or less.

Sounds a lot like the games that were split between the last generation and the current one. This is what I was getting at in my post, I doubt developers would take kindly to it.
 
Could it be that Sony is considering upping the ante against the rumored "industry leading" performance of the Nintendo NX SDK? Just a thought.
