When you guys get sore from lifting or from any form of excercise (cardio, toning, etc) do you continue excercising while you are still sore or do you wait until it's gone?

The soreness is caused by small tears in the muscle fibers. This is what makes the muscles bigger.
I've heard that it's better to wait until the soreness subsides before you work the affected area again, but it's not imperative that you wait till the soreness is gone before you exercise again.
Giving the muscles time to heal before working them again will yield you better results in a shorter time period.

I notice this when I take a few days off my regular workout routine and then get back into the gym. I get really sore, but I gain alot of mass at the same time after a short break.

It's good to give yourself a break as your body is able to adapt to your workouts, and therefore you will see slow or no results.

Not to contradict with what Boom says, but I usually stretch a lot before each workout session and I find that even if I was sore during the day, after I stretch out, I'm good to lift. But, heed caution when doing so. Don't take the short way out when stretching, take your time and stretch all muscle groups. Make sure to stretch for a decent time amount as well. Don't just grab your leg, pull it up behind your back and go squat 300 lbs. if you know what I mean.

The soreness is due to lactic acid build up in your muscles. Lactic acid is used as a substitute for oxygen in the body. When your muscles do not recieve enough oxygen during fermentation, lactic acid is used instead. Depending on the difficulty of the exercise, the acid will remain in your muscles for several days, thus making them sore.

Lightly exercising and stretching the sore muscles will increase blood flow to the area and the lactic acid will be washed away.

But hey... maybe we are bolth right.

when you get really sore its better because after the soreness goes away u get very strong.. also, wait 48 hours for your muscles to recover before doing the workout again.. when you excersise for the 4th or 5th time u wont get as sore as u were the first time

Hmm... I could never "let the soreness subside" for CC, we might take it easy but no we never took time off like that, we just stretch a lot and warm up to prevent injuries. Even now if I'd get into any consistant excersize and experienced soreness I'd take it easy but I wouldn't take time off to recuperate(sp?).

Ask a doctor. Lactic acid can add to the soreness of worked muscles but the primary source of discomfort comes from the micro-tears in the fabric of muscles.

Lactic acid is right. I was hoping to be the one to say it :grumpy:
