Sound the next frontier?

I actually listened to the whole thing XD

But yeah...makes you realize how bad sounds are in games.

I hear ya... Sound is a big one for me. Ever played GT with the sound off ? It kills it completely. For a game to be immersive it has to appeal to as many of the senses as possible.. When i drive a race car I want the sound of that car, the firebreathing burping farting engine that scares the dog with the backfires on overrun...

Can you imagine how much longer GT5 would have taken if they had to write sound algorithms for over 1000 cars? :O

Add that you can tune the car yourself and thus, change elements of the sound and you have some serious equations to bust out.

+1.

now..can you post some more links liek OP's nao?

man i wish all the LMS cars in the game sounded like those. even if it was just those cars with that level of detail in sound i would be happy cuz i would be running the 24hours of le mans race over and over

Do you have another link? That one does not seem to work for me.

OMG lolz then like they shudla like totally put it in den!?! not like iz totally hard or nuffin.

:sly:

Ummm, huh? Please let that be the last time you speak like a pre-teen loaded up on Monster Energy Crack.

Chill dude, he was being sarcastic.

Sints when duz uzing net speek eqwait sarc-asim? So what you're saying is being sarcastic or trying to "dig" at someone, diving into the sess pool of netspeak is the expected form of expressoin? Why could he just not use wit and sarcasim without demeaning himself with netspeak? Some people have a very low tolerance level for the nonsense.

It's called a joke?

If you note I mentioned how complicated it would be to implement the algorithm...whereupon humpus said it would only take a month and I replied with "netspeak" as a form of humour. Obviously other people got it, just not yourself.

Relax. I wouldn't go from talking about algorithms and having proper sentence syntax and grammar to relapsing to a 10 year old randomly without it being on purpose.

as in, he uses net speak with a sense of irony? 💡

On topic: When I read:
When I hear that: Real Engine sounds taken at Le Mans
For a brief moment I understood it to mean that PD had been taking/recording real engine sounds at Le Mans, and I thought "YES! They're recording sounds of Le Mans! And they're going to listen to the recording of Le Mans! Maybe, just maybe they will hear the difference between Le Mans and the game." That says it all really.

One thing GT has got going for it: Because the sounds are so soft, they are, at least, not too harsh or fatiguing over long time periods. Very easy on the ears, unlike the raw, vicious sounds that racing cars actually make. I'm not even being sarcastic, it does actually have a benefit imo.

The engine sounds on Spec II were pretty good, dont know why they tuned it down

Must say the sound is one of the most important aspects to me. and certainly something where in the past the game sounds a lot different to the real thing on a lot of the cars I've driven.

I guess I'd prefer a few less cars and a bit more detail, but then chances are the cars that would be cut would be the ones I'd want to drive......

Really? I personally thought the Spec III sounds were a bit better overall....especially in the replays...it seemed like they added more doppler effect and echoes and what not.

In one of those doco's on GT-TV where they were talking about the new Nissan GTR, they were shown recording the exhaust...

Yes, for me one of the biggest weakness of GT is the sound, I was at Le mans (La Sarthe circuit) when the rotative engine Mazda 787b won... the sound was SOOO fabulous, you could hear the car on the main stand alley when she was still in the Mulsanne Straight!!!... I was so disappointed with the engine sound in GT4 and GT5 seems to not have really updated from GT4 in the sound department... So bad that the sound still stays today one of the most undervalued feature of a racing game... (The best sound I heard in a game so far was in GTR 2 and evo, the recent NFS Shift and in PGR 3 - for certain cars only- but they are still FAR FAR away of the Sample I gave you at the beginning of this thread).

When I hear that: Real Engine sounds taken at Le Mans I said to myself why the sound is always the last on the list of a racing game... what about you?

Thanks for posting. I listened to it all and the sounds really gave me goose bumps. I'm not an audiophile (well, I am a bit but I spent more on displays than sound kit), but for me sounds like that would add so much more to the game than graphics.

That's right, real engine gaves goosebumps.... it's a real melody is in own senses. V8, V10, V12, backfire, gears changing... each cars have a distinct sound and a primal ROAR that immerse you so much into the driving.... why the "REAL DRIVING SIMULATOR" don't have such fabulous sounds!?

I agree! If they just got all the race cars right i would be thrilled!!!👍

I'm Hoping that they will improve the sound. I was really disappointed to hear how bad some of the cars in GT4 were.

Compare the Sauber C9 in GT4 to the Real Thing
