Super-enduros in GT4?

About 20 laps into your average endurance, I often find myself drifting in & out of conscious. Then I hit a barrier, wake up steer, do another lap... repeat.... woo I won the endurance :boggled:

I tell ya if your an insomniac, try a GT endurance race

Now we're just getting masochistic.

All you naysayers who can't handle pressing a button or think it's boring, pfft! I suppose better AI would help to make it remotely interesting at times. But in another thread a few people were advocating tuning and racing an Espace minivan to it's limits (think that was the car), completing endurance races in is the same vein in that case, there's a sense of achievement in concentrating and driving a perfect race.

An endurance on GT might be interesting if the game had the following things...

1. a realistic damage system
2. mechanical break down
3. pit teams you can talk too/ communicate with
4. decent ai

This stuff would make you THINK. Planning pit stops properly etc

this is the sticker. a good race is a close race meaning that the AI would have to be balanced to everyones different skill levels. and then it would turn arcade'ish, wish a sort of "catch up" mode.... would keep it exciting tho... buut i dunno

I hate AI slow down and catch up (although I understand it's good for the beginner races).

Putting this in an enduro would make the enduro pointless. The whole idea of an enduro is to make sure you can concentrate for a long period. Having slow down and catch up would mean that regardless of how rubbish or how good you race, you'll always be racing in the pack which destroys the sense of achievement!

Disagree - because if you're good and are well ahead, then you still need to keep your concentration to "stay" ahead which is the idea of enduros. If you are ridiculously far ahead, then simply race with a more competitive vehicle!

If you far behind because you are crap, or chose a slower vehicle, then you can try to lessen the gap lap by lap which can be exciting.

why would you suddenly start catching if you were so far behind? also if your well ahead its only going to increase as the race goes on... no more challenge after 10 laps cause you'v already lapped them. then you just cruise to the end, trying to bump the people your lapping off the track and such

Simple: You choose a car whereby you are only half a second or 1 second faster than the AI per lap (on a perfect lap), then if you fall behind it is possible to catch up and if you are ahead then any slip up will have the AI right behind you.

If you choose and ultra fast car which can easily win then it is boring, so choose a vehicle which is close to the AI or slightly ahead per lap when you drive a perfect lap!

Agree.

the fact you have to tune your car down to accomodate the slower opposition is definetly bad, especially just to stop a race getting boring. and make the race take even longer.

although i will concede its probably the best idea theres gonna be

One big problem in GT3 was that the cars were not all on the same class/speed. So you just could battle with 2 than 5 (in an ideal case) opponents.

Real fun in super-enduros? Only with human opponents in my opinion.

i don´t care for ultra long endurances.
as long as the tires go down at a realistic rate so i don´t have to pit every 15 laps, it´s fine with me.
but i also admit if an eduro is longer than three hours in total, a save option would be nice.

You know if you use the right analog stick for throttle, you can do an enduro without deforming your thumb.

'Doctor! I broke my thumb!" And when did you notice this happen? Well, sorta after I finished a 24 hour race on GT3.
Nah, mate. For all the masochists out there, go ahead. But for me, analog sticks could make me last up to three hours. No longer, though, I'd be fast asleep.

First of all, let's get real for a moment. I normally like to think in terms of humans. We know what we are capable of, so let's cut some crap out, alright?

First off, sure, real endurances have no Pause button. Sure, real endurances can go for more than 2 hours. But if you ask me, I don't know one person that can sit down and play a game for hours on end. Meaning, not interrupted, not having to go to the bathroom, not answering the phone, that sort of thing. There was someone I once talked to 2 or 3 years ago at K-Mart about Gran Turismo 3. The clerk at the Electronics section said that he couldn't do those long races. I told him that the Tokyo endurance takes up at most 3 hours. So what, is this guy a wimp for not doing long races? Well answer me this. How many people actually have enough time to run a very long race, even if it is pink-colored Toyota Vitzes running around Test Course for 10 laps? Not many. People often shy away from longer races. We could deal with Gran Turismo 2's 5-lap races, but GT3 makes the races longer and harder, and you'll most likely had to make a pit stop. The PD Cup for GT4 was all Reverse courses lasting about maybe 40 minutes (I have only played the Tokyo race, and I'm saving the other rounds until I complete most of the other races first). So, if you can do races longer than normal, that's fine. If races are too long, we have a problem. Can you maximize your time to playing the game? I know I can. If I have time on my hands, I'll race a decent-sized endurance. If not, I want to back out until I DO have enough time.

Bottom line- not everyone can run the longest of races. As a game company, you want to please EVERYONE. About one time where I needed to burn up as much time as possible was in the Nintendo 64 game "Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire." Playing that stage where I had to beat Bobba Fett took almost half an hour. Didn't mean the other stages were endurances. But, can the "no pause, no save" for the "make all races 500 laps" crap. Be humanistic. Be real. Be careful... have a good night!

I think there are two alternative solutions to this which would make everyone happy.

1. Have a separate section within the game for long championships and single enduros whereby they can be raced for cash/car incentives but are not a prerequisite for completing 100% of the game.

2. Adjustable race lengths within career mode. All beginner/intermediate could be fixed lengths of between 2 and 5/10 laps, but professional could have the option of say 5 laps minimum (so it wasn't too easy) with the option of running 10/25/50 and even 100 laps if so wished, with the resultant prizes being equal regardless.

That would keep everyone happy........ although like all our best ideas will never happen...lol

Now why don't they take notice of what WE WANT in the game...lol

Have a separate section for enduros? Like, say, the Endurance section? Drifting may feature, I don't like that, but if I have to do it to get 100%, I will. Enduro's should be the same.

Enduro's are there because people enjoy them and they're a very real part of driving and racing. Personally, I do have the time and the stamina to play games for over 10 hours at a sitting, I keep lemonade and chips beside me and that's about all I need. I'm in the minority, I know.

Adjustable race distances - nah, people will get narky about having completed the game to the same extent as someone else.

Personally I thought GT3 was far better in this respect. Sure, you have 40-50 minute races in series now, but you can save after every round. We never had that before, you'd be stuck completing an event for hours sometimes. Racing the Normal Car series in GT1 with a Viper for a few hours was a pain in the ass.

You're preaching to the converted:p I used to play le mans 24 hour and once done a 24 hour race over a weekend in two 12 hour sittings with breaks for nature and refreshment only!:D

I love the enduro races in gt3, but i think there was a 3h one in gt2, wich is a appropiate amount o`time, for getting up to speed and get the real enduro feel.
Maybe we can get one on the Nurb?
On gt3 i liked the Monaco enduro for both gt`s and f1, I actually drove them successive, so my pad-downgear shifter stuck in the latter part and I had to pit for a new one. Then the seatlle 100, wich is cool to get below the one-hour mark.Did it once with darkblueGt40 with tuneup(580ps)and t3`s.That has to be what enduro is about, heavy duty.
