Do any of you guys actually like Motegi?

I ran the GTA seasonal for credits and didn't enjoy it at all. Maybe it's the stock R35 but it just seemed like it was mainly getting the brake zones down and not understeering off track through the apexes. None of the turns felt fun even when I got them right. Maybe I'm missing something? Kinda liked the short course in GTA though.

It's like you were inside my head.

Looks like a fun road to drive. But yeah, understeer and inexperience is not a good mixture.

After I watched it again, I think he's getting air off the crest, no? Would explain that lack of steering.

I don't think he got air (not until he hit that boulder anyways lol). The car became very lite at the crest of the hill by unloading the springs. It took all the traction away and caused the understeer. You can see he turned the wheel but there was no traction on the front tires. Carrying way too much speed, bad angle and a very late turn in.

The lack of pedal feel with a DFGT has a better solution. ABS OFF! Lack of brake feel has always made GT5 feel too arcadey to me.

Last night I tested out a couple fully stock cars offline with ABS OFF and kept adding sponge resistance until I could actually feel some real brake modulation. Without adaquate resistance it's really difficult to feel any pedal so that's THE major reason ABS OFF initially seems impossible. The car just locks up. Well that and proper BB settings.

First used a stock 89 Miata/ comfort hards @Tsukuba. bb of 4/2. Wow! Suddenly I was able to modulate the brakes partially to slow the car just enough. Checking the brake indicator showed 30-50% to match my input unlike the instant 100% with ABS OFF. Went back to ABS ON @6/4 and hated it. Brakes either on or off. Really showed me how much ABS ON is a brake assist.

Amar's post down this page has some great info on BB settings that will eliminate that dreaded rear lock up. The default 5/5 is too hard to use for sure but I always change up the settings anyway.

Certainly not suggesting running ABS OFF in our races! But between running cockpit view and experimenting with trying to get some realistic brake feel, GT5 is so much more involving. Running with it off ensures proper straight line braking technique, modulation and a light touch in trail braking are used. In my down time I'm playing around offline attempting to turn GT5 into as much of a simulator as I can.

Sorry this is so long but I know most of us want more realism and driver envolvement.

Shouldn't you be resting your arm? haha

I've tried running with ABS off. I always lock up the rear wheels and end up in an uncontrolled spin. I may try adjusting the brake balance to see if that will settle the car down a bit. Just didn't feel realistic when i tried it.

I modded the spring last night, found about 1/2 pound of dog hair, spider webs and 2 spiders inside. Are you using ordinary kitchen sponges on the back of brake pedal?

Yeah, that was my experience too. Tried it a couple times then forgot about it. Then read some threads touting it and gave it a try yesterday. Getting pedal resistance is absolutely crucial. Without it I couldn't tell when the brakes engaged and locked up. I put enough sponge resistance that it took some fairly serious effort to get the pedal to 100%. Hitting the brakes at say 30% was similar to real life braking. Just enough to slow down to enter a turn. You never use 100% in real life anyway.

I tried the old Alfa race car with similar results. A much more natural feel. I'll try out some faster cars with the BB settings from Amar's thread.

And yes, I should be resting my arm! Feels ok in short testing sessions though.

Edit: I used a tile grout clean up sponge from Home Depot. Pretty stout. Those sponge balls are what a lot of guys use but I already had the sponge. Tore it in big enough pieces that I had to cram it in. Small bungees help too. The more resistance the better.

Thanks NCR, I'm going to try this tonight. I always adjust my rear brakes lower because I trail brake and I have to constantly watch my brake indicator so I don't go to the magical 100%. Since I got better headphones I'm able to really hear the brake lockup but it's still lacking something in realism. This may be the missing piece to the puzzle.

Envy, bear in mind I've just tried it out offline in TT mode. Without any AI on track even.
Tire wear and online physics are pretty powerful variables.

Even with the brake mods going back to ABS1 the brake feel was missing. It's turning off ABS that the modulation shows itself. There's a learning curve for sure but I know I brake dive more than I realize. Once I get back to online pack racing I doubt I'll use it but for offline it's a fun experiment.

You want a fun experience? We should have 1 race with no ABS, Cockpit view only, all hud info turned off. That would be interesting and give a more realistic racing experience.

JT, i found a bike for the big wheel event.

Nice setup

I'm willing to try that. Maybe I could use the BMW iDrive navigation screen to show me the track. Lol.

I just scratched the surface with the brake thing. Using heavily modded street cars with racing tires might have very different results.

My goal was to have a stock street car behave as close as possible to it's real life counterpart within GT5's parameters. Not having any brake feel lead me into ABS off. You'd really have to have some serious seat time with it off to race online competively with guys who have ABS on. I'm not that brave!

I'm not worried. I'm not fast enough to be leading so I'll have the car in front of me to help me stop. :)

(just kidding) I'll try it in practice along with the five other things I thought of but when it's race day I'll probably turn abs back on.

Ok guys, I've been thinking about what type of series to run after STC. The idea I've come up with (and this is just a rough draft) is a IROC or Trans Am series. It will be a one make for all the races. The car will most likely be the 69 Z28 RM. We are going to run two races per night like we are now. What I'd like to know is how would you guys feel about running say the 69 for one race then the 2010 Camaro RM for the other? Kind of a vintage/modern IROC series. Oh and this will be, for the first time, a points series.

Sounds fun. Don't forget that the 1988 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z Concept is also in the game. Oh, and toss in an oval or two :)

This!!! The more real , the better .

Hop in that 69 Z RM, take it around Laguna in cockpit view and try not to smile.

This sounds interesting, I like the 69' Camaro Z28 RM, for the real scare, put on CM tires, no ABS, no other aids, on Daytona Road, in cockpit view, no HUD, the 1st corner will ..... find out yourself :)

Thanks for the suggestion but our group is not that hard core. Comfort tires are not going to be used. The only aids we do allow are abs and sometimes TC on 1. Although the majority do not use TC. We have found that using the HUD especially the track map is a useful tool in knowing where the other racers are in relation to yourself during the race.

I was just teasing with you guys, no offense:sly:

I've had my fill taking some Sema car around turn 1 at Daytona. Not sure i've ever sweated before while sim racing!

I agree with Mike . All aids off in cockpit view could be fun.

We could try it tonight with the Stc cars just to see what people think. I just got home from a day at the amusement park and I'm beat. I'm still going to try getting on tonight.
