What exactly am I looking at? That looks like a really bad welding job.
You're looking at a monster effin' turbo underneath a Pontiac T/A Firehawk of all cars. Notice where it's located, so when someone pops the hood they don't see anything relating to boost.

:odd:

It looks like a mess, and I see no turbo whatsoever. I've been zooming in this whole time.

The turbo is sitting vertical with the exhaust pipes coming in from the passengers side, recirculating down the drivers side and exiting out the single pipe on the passengers side. His intake is also back there. Keeps the engine bay clean. That's why theres a bunch of pipes.

Here's the kit.

His only has a single exhaust since his intake is slightly different.

Didn't the Toyota 7 have a similar design? And is there actually any benefit from placing it there?
Its possible there minght be a small benefit because it's away from all heat in the engine bay. But I never researched it enough to know.

Just seems dishonest IMO. Racing a guy for pinks and he has you pop the hood (bonnet) to see what he's up against and you've stashed your turbo in your ass..

When you win and drive away, surprise surprise, there it is.

Except the Toyota was mid engined longitudinally mounted. The Turbos were next to the engine. No need for complicated intakes and welding.

Direct experience with the STS Turbo kit here as I helped install one in a 1999 Camaro a good while ago. The system just takes like half a second more to presurize the long route to and from the snail and that's all, once the air is flowing you've got boost. The guy was running low 12s-high/mid 11s all along relying only on the turbo and a Z06 (LS6) cam and a clutch kit.

There's also a Mustang kit, @Slash

What exactly is the benefit, besides deceit?

Space! At least in the case of a 4th gen F-Body which is what I have experience with, the engine bay is damned crampled, so if you want to drop in a snail or two you have to get rid of a lot of factory stuff. If you don't wnat to fiddle with that, you go rear-mounted.

And yes, also stealth. It looks like a down-looking CAI.

I remember looking these up about 5 years ago. I'm not sure I came about them but I thought it was interesting. While not the most practical, it is the safest in regards to police.

I remember seeing an IS-F with a twin turbo set up.
